Over the course of 15 years and almost as many albums and international tours, Australian popstars The Lucksmiths have penned some of the most adored songs this side of the pop underground and built up a massive fanbase in the process. Pop Mayhem was a one-off celebration of great music in Gainesville, FL in May 2008. To commemorate the occasion, a limited 7" was pressed with four EXCLUSIVE tracks. This 4-way split single features tracks from THE FRENCH HORNS (A smashing cover of MARGO GURYAN's classic "Think of Rain", and the band features two ex-BRITTLE STARS members), CITRA SUPER (sweet indiepop featuring a member of HOLOPAW), NERVOUS SYSTEMS (dirge-y noise-pop reminiscent of HOOD's finer early moments; watch for their debut album, recorded by VIVIAN GIRLS knob-twiddler Jeremy Scott), and QUE POSSUM (like a bolt of lightning, they came and went; their only other recorded output sits neatly on the flip side of a BOYRACER split single; lucky for us we have their best song here).

Considered by Michael Lueckner, one-half of Guitar, to be "the most straight shoegazer-style album Guitar ever did," its tracks alternate between introspective laptop folk and full-on walls of layered guitar shoegazer bliss.

Not only in terms of its willingness to lyrically explore the lexicon of love without the escape clause of postmodern irony, but the romance of unashamedly grand and eccentric gestures – the inherent romance of outsiders seeking to gently subvert the pop song, reconstructing it as something familiar yet foreign, classicist yet newfangled. Think of the Human League's Dare!, ostensibly a collection of love songs made to sound like science fiction; or New Order's plainspoken anti-poetry couched in synthetic symphonies that were the very antithesis of the everyday. It is this largely abandoned idea of the velvet melody in the robotic glove to which Champagne Riot aspires. And with its debut EP, Paris and I, you hear it realized.

The duo's layering of conventional instruments like the guitar, drums, and bass with electronic enhancements, made for an album that has a temporal pitch embossed in supernatural hues. The dewy synth-flaked hazes have a classic ambient touch with chord bolts that streak through them etching a gorgeous penmanship. It is one of those albums that if you knew how to make, you would. The American Dollar's balance of earthy and airy tones is attractive. The duo do not lean more on one side than the other, which makes the graphic images permeating from their songs resound with a human voicing while piped in idealistic esthetics.

Soundpool's second full length release "Dichotomies & Dreamland" boasts two bonus remixes from Manual & Ursula 1000, available only on this Japanese import. Volume Three provides a perfect entry point into Televise catalogue, in that the album combines the three previous releases, and offers a variety of different angles on the one-man-band's sound. At times you'll encounter pure, ambient electronics like 'Flood Out', sounding as though Scott had isolated the corona of reverb that caps off Harold Budd recordings and set it within a narrative of its own.
