Minneapolis has a very cool incestuous pop scene. From that fertile playground, comes members of THE HANG-UPS as The Waves. Jeff Kearns and Phil Parhamovich are the duo leading this group through their 70's Ronson-esque guitar laden power pop hits. One minute the band are plowing through T. Rex inspired gems like "Free Entertainment" and the next, they are settling down with a melancholy, and stunningly beautiful song like "Taken By". It's the latter that sounds closest to the Hang-Ups brand of gentle pop, but these Waves are more dynamic and edgier. This is truly a wonderful jagged little pop record.
