May 23rd 2007 is one of those exceptional records truly deserving of the term genre-defying. The Kallikak Family utilize sound collage from collected field recordings, layers of nonverbal vocals, bursts of stuttering, breakbeat-style drums, processed keyboard instruments, computer-generated drone, and minimalistinspired acoustic guitar throughout the album. "At times reminiscent of the Books, this outstanding cut/paste ambient collage is propelled by a continuous onslaught of fresh ideas. 8.2. --Pitchfork.
