Hey dudes,
** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

HALA STRANA-Heave the Gambrel Roof CD (Music Fellowship-$12.99)
Steven R. Smith began recording music under the Hala Strana moniker in 2002 as a way to further explore his interest in traditional Eastern European folk music, apart from his solo releases under his own name and collaborative work in Thuja, Mirza, and other Jewelled Antler creations. Heave the Gambrel Roof is Smith's fourth full length album under the Hala Strana name. The album is a return to the shorter, more song-based form of Fielding and Hala Strana and includes reworks of four traditional Albanian tunes as well as seven original tracks.
As with all Hala Strana releases, Heave the Gambrel Roof contains a wide variety of instruments (many built by Smith himself) such as the hurdy gurdy, spike fiddle, gourd guitar, bowed baritone psaltery, bouzouki, xaphoon, and the more common electric guitar, organ, cello, and harmonium. The album includes musical contributions from Loren Chasse (Blithe Sons, Franciscan Hobbies, Of) on one track.

JOANNA NEWSOM-Have One On Me 3xCD BOX (Drag City-$18.99)
Joanna Newsom fans: don't look now, but Joanna's about to let her hair down — and that's a considerable task these days! Of course, to the demure Mme. Newsom, the 125 minutes-worth of songs is nothing more than a new album, entitled Have One On Me. Pundits claim that the record album as it has been known to us for the past half-century is dead or dying. With this in mind, dig Joanna's incredible expanding album. At the end of the forty-four minutes that comprise Have One On Me's first disc, you're just getting started, the space within you just beginning to become filled. It's a record, it's a virtual experience, it's a new friendship — the record album of the future!
Length is tempered with instrumental color throughout Have One On Me, which was arranged by Ryan Francescioni. Ryan's work with brass and woodwind ensembles lends a fresh air to the tunes — and his own string playing, on instruments including acoustic guitar, banjo, Bulgarian tambura mandolin and kaval, matches well with Joanna's harp arrangements. Neal Morgan places percussive strikes thoughout the album with deep spiritual conviction. Joanna's harp is the center, tapping the bones of the song, then cutting wider, in the company of the accompanying
ensemble foliage, making way for her growing voice: cooing, crooning, belting, sounding as like a horn. And Joanna's touch at the piano is as deep and moving as at the harp. Joanna Newsom's songs are rolled with passion, playfulness, history, humor, journal entries — everything she can get in there without sacrificing musicality. This occasionally demands a rewiring of the accepted lines of song structure, but that's a wheel that's been reinflated before. Joanna delights in her role s singer-songwriter; as such she's inclined to curve perspectives, singing not just of herself and her feelings but embodying others', some of whom she knows and some of whom she may know wherefore of they speak.
Listeners, we ask, who is singing, and to whom? There's a diversity of relations here, life measured
through stimulating dialog and a disconcerting directness of inquest. Linearity is also jogged on Have One On Me, upending traditional narrative direction in favor of an allusive rippling effect that ebbs and flows over the course of the three discs. The blessed contractions of time and space that allow for albums to honestly account for the circumference of the world in a day or report of intensities in ten cities, or of a road that goes on forever, allow also for the back-and-forth action of Have One On Me. It is Joanna's winding path that we walk down, but no there's no sprawl to it — instead, an orderly quality, rolling in and out of wild country, extending into infinity.
Through the course of Have One On Me's eighteen songs, Joanna visits ditties, weepies, court dances, rump-bumpers, epics and moments of panavision fantasia upon us. Once you're done digging through this lot, another few years will have passed and it'll be time for another new one. By then, the world'll be ready for the twenty-four hour album, right?

SCOUT NIBLETT-The Calcination of... CD (Drag City-$13.99)
"Drag City rolls up on the Scout Niblett scene just in time for the grand calcination. What luck, to arrive in time for such good timing! Her new record is her most tightly coiled long-player yet, a heavy handful of songs that are reaching for the ripe and the light. People come to Emma Louise 'Scout' Niblett for the joy of a scalding hot bath of sound amidst stark, bluesy emoting -- and she won't let 'em down this time. But something has shifted. Having made herself a record or two's worth of celebration ballads and moody freakouts, she seems to be hearing that call from within to feel for other things. Yelling at the kids around the way only ever gets you so far. And so, it's time to holler inward. The Calcination of Scout Niblett finds our girl in phase transition, exchanging elements for the betterment of her organism. Stripping down. Surrendering. Taking the bull by the wheel and driving to another place. Take the picture on the cover. It's the first album photo where Sc
out's acknowledging the camera, a new relationship giving sign of a greater awareness of herself and a desire to confront -- a new confrontation, a more sober and realistic conversation. Throughout The Calcination of Scout Niblett we see Scout in deep focus. The lens has dollied in and stuck there. The sweat conjured in performance permeates the screen; darkness is all around her, overwhelming the picture. She's in an empty space and her voice snaps against the walls, behind weird shadows we can't make out. And cutting through, we might believe that we're hearing an inner monologue or two. The songs string together, almost as one, her guitar growls and bites, and the black velvet of space hovers. Just when the tension in the room and the filament of guitar can't glow any brighter, suddenly a band erupts, accompaniment to her vision -- and then back down to Scout and guitar. All the better for the boys to not get too burned. Well, burned just enough. Well-done, even! The Calcination of Scout Niblett is an intense devotional, a determined spirit journey and a collection of great slow-dance songs."

** YE OLDE TYME VINYL **

-- The following few titles are described in the CD section above --

JOANNA NEWSOM-Have One On Me 3xLP BOX (Drag City-$25.99)
SCOUT NIBLETT-The Calcination of... LP (Drag City-$14.99)

FOUR TET-There is Love in You 2xLP (Domino-$20.99)
There Is Love In You is Four Tet's first full-length album in over four years and is his fifth album to date.

MAJOR STARS-Return to Form LP (Drag City-$14.99)
"When you've got a love for music, there's no time to spare. The band called Major Stars all got other gigs that take them from place to place without room to converse much. That's okay, because they're about playing music, not small talkin'! So what's been going on around the practice space then? Major Stars have a new one that might lay it on you all at once like a plank of solid stone, and they're calling it Return to Form. Starting with a mid-fight schoolyard threat like 'Better Stay Down' (what, no exclamation point?), Major Stars do definitely seem to be returning to somewhere on this new new album, maybe even perhaps somewhere adolescent where the rock and roll was never better? But really, titling the whole damn thing Return to Form has some humor in it. Mirror/Messenger wasn't out of form; all Major Stars records have been a part of a vision and even if some shit said he or she (probably he) didn't like it, that doesn't really call for a response title on the next al
bum. We read it like this: it's you who's returning to form! Major Stars atomized you to fucking bits on the last record and only now are you returning to a fully formed entity. And here Major Stars are to blow you to pieces again. You're fucked up. Return to Form's got eight pieces, all heavy rocks, a few of them come with power jams. There's also a few just under three minutes, but distinguished by riffage that lifts 'em up. The guitars trio of Wayne Rogers, Kate Village and Tom Leonard is into their third full album as such, allowing them to have fused into a wall of distorto with a myriad of identities but singular purpose. Behind their ubiquitous combination signal, the drums trample with pummelous authority. Still, they can't help but sound a bit crushed by the din, glorious din. This is Major Stars' signature rock of the easties -- more likened to the sounds of Motorpsycho than any of that psych-rock these days! Again, this is organic growth, home territory. Could it be that the space you know is better than the space you don't know? Major Stars got answer, and it's Return to Form."

SHE & HIM-In the Sun 7" (Merge-$5.99)
"In The Sun," featuring guest vocals by Tilly and the Wall, is the first single from Volume Two. This seven-inch vinyl release features the B-side "I Can Hear Music," originally performed by The Beach Boys.

SHOUT OUT LOUDS-Work LP (Merge-$16.99)
Work is the third full-length from Sweden's Shout Out Louds. Produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins), Work strips away all of the bells and whistles of previous efforts to showcase the band doing what they do best, writing and playing pop music that is "nostalgic and angst-ridden, but ultimately life-affirming. Shout Out Louds have found a winning formula." (Amazon.com)
OK folks, get over that terrible Who performance last weekend, throw on Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, tune in to NBC for some Vancouver snow action, and get a load of the goodies just in. Oh, and don't forget to snuggle up with who/what matters most to you. Happy Valentines and all!
** EXCLUSIVE AND/OR RECOMMENDED **

SHE SIR-Yens 7" ($no pricing info from the band yet, but hopefully up on the website shortly!!)
LIMITED to 300 copies! 4 new tracks from the Texas folks, melding dreampop/shoegaze sonics with pop sensibilities. Lotsa lovely guest slots on these tracks as well.
She Sir alumni include past and present members of JOHN VANDERSLICE, MENOMENA, LOXSLY, BRAZOS, WHAT MADE MILWAUKEE FAMOUS, RINGO DEATHSTARR, MY EDUCATION, PEEL and LOW LINE CALLER. She Sir experiment with and generally obsess over the aesthetics of songwriting. Unique phrasing, intricate arrangement, smart sensibilities, and cagey rhythms are just a few of the elements that contribute to the unique She Sir sound. By combining carefully constructed songcraft and unhurried vocals --along with their education and background in Classical and Modern music composition practices-- the band achieves a wall of sound that unmistakably presents a modern skew all their own. This band proves that modern indie music yet contains undiscovered territory.
In 2006, She Sir released an academically dense piece of nineties-influenced shoegaze writing called, "Who Can't Say Yes." The record charted well within the CMJ top 100 and brought with it lots of positive reviews and recognition. The band has since stayed hard at work on their follow-up and has continued to steadily gain interest from bloggers and listeners, both locally and internationally.

** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

MATT BARTRAM-Left to Memory CD (Drifting Falling-$9.99)
Over the past nine years with his band Air Formation, Matt Bartram has proven to be one of the most prolific, consistent and most respected songwriters of the second wave of shoegazing. Not one to sit still, always feeling the need to keep moving forward, Matt has also released music as The Static Silence (a collaboration with Rachel Goldstar: Experimental Aircraft, Eau Claire & All In The Golden Afternoon).
In addition Matt has spent the last few years recording more experimental excursions at home on his eight track. These recordings generally spawn from improvisations based around simple rhythms and drone. His aim is to create hypnotic, mesmerising and uplifting tracks which reflect a more ambient feel. Matt Bartram's highly regarded debut solo album 'Arundel', was released in March 2008 by Drifting Falling.
The follow up 'Left to Memory' features some of Bartram's most compelling work to date, solo or otherwise, and displays a jaw-dropping mastery of texture, melody and drive that knows when to pull in the reigns and when to take the safety off.

GIL SCOTT-HERON - I'm New Here CD (XL-$11.99)
Gil Scott-Heron is one of the most influential and important singer/songwriters to have come out of America in the second half of the last century. Much can be said about why this Gil’s lyrics are so original and powerful but ,it is important not to overlook his utterly singular voice which is so distinctive and rough and tender. It is a voice of experience. And the way this voice of his floats over the shifting funk rhythms and the deep jazz, soul and blues melodies that he and his band create is nothing short of sublime. It’s also what enables him to draw you in to the difficult issues he does not shy away from dealing with. His sound is intimate and warm and direct and consequently it is hard to resist being moved and inspired by his message.
And he has been consistently relevant whether it be on a personal or political canvas. Early on in his career he wrote and recorded the song that for many is regarded as one of the first great rap tracks – The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. From its opening lines which turn Timothy Leary on his addled head (“You will not be able to stay home brother. You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out. You will not be able to lose yourself on scag brother, because the revolution will not be televised.”), Gil threw down the gauntlet to we the people, challenging us to get involved, be informed, retain a sense of humour and do the right thing. He was angry, politically savvy, compassionate and very funny. When he was brought to Arista by Clive Davis in 1975, he was billed by the label as the black Bob Dylan, and whilst this reductive and over simplistic description is typical marketing bullshit, there is some raison d’etre for this moniker. For Gil is a protest poet
of enormous subtlety who has railed against those things in the world that he believes are wrong. And like Dylan he has often used humour as a powerful weapon.
A new record from Gil Scott-Heron, forty years after his first solo album, is a cause for major celebration and something that the world needs now more than ever.

PANTHA DU PRINCE-Black Noise CD (Rough Trade-$11.99)
Rough Trade is very pleased to announce the signing of electronic musician and producer, Pantha du Prince. His new full length, Black Noise will be released on February 9th, 2010. Pantha Du Prince fuses house, techno, shoegazy electronica and psychedelic electro-acoustic soundscapes into music that is at once both beautiful and bewitching. He has released several recordings to date through the respected German label Dial Records, which is run by and for its artists. His previous album "This Bliss", was a bittersweet take on techno, which appealed to both dancefloors and living rooms alike and was hugely successful. As a result he has become an in-demand remixer and has done tracks for Depeche
Mode, Animal Collective, Bloc Party, Phantom/Ghost, The Long Blondes and many others. On his new album, Pantha Du Prince, who lives in Berlin and Paris, claims: music slumbers in all matter; any sound, even silence, is already music. The mission, then, must be to render audible what is unheard and unheard of: black noise, a frequency that is inaudible to man. Black noise often presages natural disasters, earthquakes or floods; only some animals perceive this “calm before the storm.” Black noise is something archaic and earthy. The music on Black Noise balances precariously on the slippery threshold
between art and nature, betwen techno and folklore, which lends it a certain spectral and intangible aspect. Black Noise also features a couple of special guests – Noah Lennox of Animal Collective sings on “Stick To My Side” and Tyler Pope of !!! and LCD Soundsystem plays bass on “The Splendour”.
COSMETICS-Soft Skin 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
Cosmetics are a two piece from Vancouver, BC. Their music is made for dancing, and with feeling and attention to the details. Their trip is sleek and synthetic meets human emotion. Cosmic glamour meets do-it-yourself. Voice and a rhythm. Frosty tropics and hazy nites. Love on the beat. Nic M and Aja Emma formed Cosmetics in Summer 2008, the first band for both of them. In 2009 they put together the Tuff Trax 8-track studio in their home where they work on sound and visuals every day. Cosmetics is their lifestyle. Look for a 7" soon, followed by a 12" single and an LP/CD.

MILES DAVIS-Walkin' LP (Prestige-$11.99)
The undeniable strength and conviction present in Miles Davis' performance on Walkin', underscores the urgency and passion with which he would rightfully reclaim his status as a primary architect of bop. Davis is supported by his all-stars, consisting of his primary rhythm unit: Horace Silver (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums). The sextet featured on the title track, as well as "Blue 'n' Boogie," adds the talents of J.J. Johnson (trombone) and Lucky Thompson (tenor sax). Davis' quintet includes the primary trio and Dave Schildkraut (alto sax). Perhaps not an instantly recognizable name, Schildkraut nonetheless made some notable contributions to Stan Kenton's Kenton Showcase EPs, concurrent with his work with Miles. Walkin' commences with the extended title track, which follows a standard 12-bar blues theme. While the solos from Johnson and Thomson are unique, Miles retains a palpable sense of extrication from the music — as if the song was an extension of h
is solo instead of the other way around. The lethargic rhythms reiterate the subtle adornments of the horn section to the basic trio. In direct contrast to "Walkin'" is a full-tilt jumper, "Blue 'n' Boogie." The improvisation yields some truly memorable solos and exchanges between Davis and Johnson — who can be heard clearly quoting from Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-A-Ning." "Solar" maintains a healthy tempo while drawing the listener in to the delicate interplay where the solos often dictate the melody. Horace Silver's piano solo is Ellington-esque in it's subdued elegance. The final track, "Love Me or Leave Me," gives the most solid indication of the direction Miles' impending breakthrough would take. So swift and certain is each note of his solo, it reflects the accuracy of someone thinking several notes ahead of what he is playing. Walking is a thoroughly solid effort. - AMG

DIGNAN PORCH-On A Ride 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
Dignan Porch is Joe and younger brother Sam Walsh, Philippa Bloomfield, a school friend and Ben Goodwin, a local barman. All four live in and around Tooting South London. All four were born in St Georges Hospital, Tooting. Tooting is fairly unfashionable and un-cool so the band lock themselves away and make tunes, then they get gigs in the cool parts of London and impress people. The band rehearse and record mainly at Joe and Sam’s parent’s house, upstairs in the front bedroom. They rehearse until about 9pm so as not to disturb the neighbourhood. Dignan Porch don’t rehearse that much because they want to keep things SLACK. Joe and Sam formed the band to please their Dad who plays guitar in pubs for money. A friend called Steve might be joining the band soon to do backing vocals and play keyboard. Ben the Bass player has a fibre glass jaw and a metal hand from fighting people. Philippa the drummer is a great artist, she once played a drumkit made of porcelain with hammers for
sticks and smashed it up in the name of art. Sam (guitar) drives really fast around London in his car, but the car stereo broke so he’s a bit sad now. Joe (vocals) writes the songs and takes the whole thing extremely seriously even though he pretends to be laid back. The music is dreamy psyche pop, it’s really, really awesome and will be really popular soon. Tooting has two nice pubs and about 200 curry houses. Dignan Porch will have a 7" before 2009 is over with an LP in 2010, when they will tour the US.
NICK DRAKE-Pink Moon 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$19.99)
Now all three classic Nick Drake albums are finally back in stock!

DUM DUM GIRLS-Jail La La 7" (Sub Pop-$5.99)
“Jail La La” for the forthcoming I Will Be, available March 30th in LP, CD and digital formats. The B-side is a cover of “Play With Fire” by The Rolling Stones. Mixed by Alonzo Vargas and Richard Gottehrer.

THE FEELIES-Crazy Rhythms LP (Bar/None-$17.99)
Bar/None is proud to release two classic albums by the Feelies that much loved group of hyper active indie rockers that did much to influence the sound of college radio in the 1980s. Their debut album Crazy Rhythms is a masterwork of perfectly honed minimalist rock 'n' roll that leaps and darts into the corners of the listeners consciousness a true sonic achievement that Rolling Stone called one of the 100 Best albums of the 1980s. Fans of the Velvet Underground, Wire and Brian Eno's early solo albums will surely appreciate their forces at work. It took the Feelies six years and many configur
The Feelies: Bill Million, Glenn Mercer (vocals, guitar); Keith Clayton (bass); Anton Fier (drums). Producers: The Feelies, Mark Abel. Personnel: Glenn Mercer, Bill Million (vocals, guitar, percussion); Keith DeNunzio (vocals, percussion); Anton Fier (percussion). Liner Note Author: Jim DeRogatis. Photographers: Lynne Pickering; Diane Repp; Laura Levine. Bristling with that other often youthful sort of energy (nervous as opposed to sexual), the Feelies' CRAZY RHYTHMS is an overlooked/underrated masterpiece. The album is marked by Glen Mercer and Bill Million's furiously strummed guitars (both acoustic and electric), and propelled forward with some of the most primitive--yet outstanding--drumming since Moe Tucker, courtesy of Anton Fier. Off-kilter covers of the Beatles ("Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me and My Monkey)") and the Rolling Stones ("Paint it Black," available only on the CD version) posit the New Jersey-based Feelies as a Garden State analog to Devo,
while elsewhere the band excels at a taut, jittery nerd-pop that is invitingly their own. The title-track, however, is the album's masterpiece, and finds the band riding a six-minute-plus wave of Velvety hyperactive jangle-rock bifurcated by a brilliant rhythm break based on a minimalist, gloriously repetitive bass and drum pattern. It's an anthem for the awkward and confused, and a sterling example of the very best the American musical underground had to offer in the era following punk's initial blast. Crazy indeed.

ELIZABETH FRASER-Moses 12" (Rough Trade-$8.99)
While the circumstances that brought about this record are supremely unfortunate (see more info below) the fact that there is finally some new music from Elizabeth Frasier (one half of the legendary Cocteau Twins) can only be seen as a postive occurance.
In celebration of the life of Jake Drake-Brockman, Elizabeth Fraser is releasing the single, ‘Moses’. A close personal friend of both Elizabeth and her partner and musical collaborator, Damon Reece (Spiritualized, Massive Attack, Echo & The Bunnymen, BOM), Jake was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in September. Elizabeth and Damon feel that the passing of such a wonderful man and great friend cannot go unmarked.
A pivotal member of Echo and The Bunnymen, BOM and The Hook ‘Em Boys and, latterly, a highly respected sound recordist for the BBC, Jake was a beautiful human being and adventurer who profoundly touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him.
A talented musician, a technical genius/blagger, a jack-of-all-trades and master of many, Jake was a vibrant reminder to us all of what it is to be alive. His lust for life, keen intellect and Dunkirk spirit were a beacon of light in a world that is rapidly fading into mediocrity and convenience. As unique and individual as the classic motorcycles he loved so much, Jake was the last of the Mohicans. The Earth is a duller planet without him.
‘Moses’ was written and performed by Jake, Elizabeth and Damon and is backed with two re-mixes: the first by Thighpaulsandra (Julian Cope, Spiritualized, Coil) and the second by Andy Jenks (previously of Alpha and presently of The Flies, Spaceland).

HANOI JANES-Across the Sea 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
Hanoi Janes is mainly the work of one guy, living in Dresden, Germany. He spent the last six month constantly recording his vision of a Spector/Wilson sound, limited to on an 8-track recorder, one mic, and a stack of slightly degenerated pop nuggets in mind. In doing so he likes to keep songs really short and rather grab another beer. It’s a one-man project trying to sound like a one-man parade, combining heavy hearted simplicity with sunny and naive bubblegum pop – imagine Southern California was located at the Caspian Sea. Hanoi Janes debut 7" "Across the Sea" appears later this month. The "Year of Panic" LP is due in February

ANDREW HILL-Point of Departure LP (Blue Note-$8.99)
Pianist and composer Andrew Hill is perhaps known more for this date than any other in his catalogue -- and with good reason. Hill's complex compositions straddled many lines in the early to mid-1960s and crossed over many. Point of Departure, with its all-star lineup (even then), took jazz and wrote a new book on it, excluding nothing. With Eric Dolphy and Joe Henderson on saxophones (Dolphy also played clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute), Richard Davis on bass, Tony Williams on drums, and Kenny Dorham on trumpet, this was a cast created for a jazz fire dance. From the opening moments of "Refuge," with its complex minor mode intro that moves headlong via Hill's large, open chords that flat sevenths, ninths, and even 11ths in their striding to move through the mode, into a wellspring of angular hard bop and minor-key blues. Hill's solo is first and it cooks along in the upper middle register, almost all right hand ministrations, creating with his left a virtual counterpoint f
or Davis and a skittering wash of notes for Williams. The horn solos in are all from the hard bop book, but Dolphy cuts his close to the bone with an edgy tone. "New Monastery," which some mistake for an avant-garde tune, is actually a rewrite of bop minimalism extended by a diminished minor mode and an intervallic sequence that, while clipped, moves very quickly. Dorham solos to connect the dots of the knotty frontline melody and, in his wake, leaves the space open for Dolphy, who blows edgy, blue, and true into the center, as Hill jumps to create a maelstrom by vamping with augmented and suspended chords. Hill chills it out with gorgeous legato phrasing and a left-hand ostinato that cuts through the murk in the harmony. When Henderson takes his break, he just glides into the chromatically elegant space created by Hill, and it's suddenly a new tune. This disc is full of moments like this. In Hill's compositional world, everything is up for grabs. It just has to be taken a piece at a time, and not by leaving your fingerprints all over everything. In "Dedication," where he takes the piano solo further out melodically than on the rest of the album combined, he does so gradually. You cannot remember his starting point, only that there has been a transformation. This is a stellar date, essential for any representative jazz collection, and a record that, in the 21st century, still points the way to the future for jazz.

RAINY DAY-The Winter Album LP (Chemical Wire-$5.99)
This is the first full-length release from Rainy Day. Members include J. Maxey, William Burton Livingston III and Bruce Tull from the SCUD MOUNTAIN BOYS (Sub Pop) on pedal steel. This album was recorded in the woods and at the Woodmont Hotel in the winter of 2009 and holds true to the bleak, lo-fi sound of their debut EP.

DEX ROMWEBER DUO-Ruins of Berlin LP (Bloodshot-$11.99)
"Dex Romweber was and is a huge influence on my music. I owned all of his records as a teenager, and was thrilled at the fact that we were able to play together recently on tour. His attitude towards music is remarkable. His songwriting, along with his love of classic American music from the south, be it rockabilly, country or R&B, is one of the best kept secrets of the rock n roll underground." —Jack White, WHITE STRIPES
Dexter Romweber is nothing less than an icon of the American music underground. The former frontman for the world famous psycho-surf-rockabilly-garage-punk combo Flat Duo Jets, released his first of nine albums in 1990 to rave reviews worldwide. He starred alongside R.E.M. and The B-52s in the 1987 cult classic film "Athens, GA Inside Out". His first national tour in 1990 was as opening act for The Cramps. He was showcased on MTV's The Cutting Edge and 120 Minutes, starred in the Flat Duo Jets videos "Wild Wild Lover" and "Radioactive Man", made a stunning performance on Late Night with David Letterman, and has shared the stage with dozens of other rock icons including Iggy Pop and the White Stripes.
The Dex Romweber Duo also features Dex's celebrated sibling Sara Romweber (Mitch Easter, Lets Active, Snatches of Pink) on drums. Together the two have been performing electrifying concerts all over the US, including touring with Cat Power, Neko Case, Th' Legendary Shack Shakers, Southern Culture On The Skids and the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
The Dex Romweber Duo's first Bloodshot album, Ruins of Berlin, features duets between Dex and CAT POWER, NEKO CASE and EXENE CERVENKA. John Plymale (Meat Puppets, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Corrosion Of Conformity) produced.
"The Dex Romweber duo specializes in music plucked with the soul and faith of a Sunday morning revival, a fluid mix of blues, surf-rock, rockabilly, proto-rock & roll and garage." —Riverfront Times

SILK FLOWERS-As Above So Below 12" (Captured Tracks-$12.99)
Six track EP by this current NYC live staple. Eerie and experimental electronic pop.

SILVER APPLES-s/t 180g LP (Kapp-$11.99)
180 gram reissue. Officially licensed through Universal. "N.Y. sound... Just two guys.. The amazing thing is they make absolutely mind shattering music with all this junky equipment." -- Jules Freemond, East Village Other

SILVER APPLES-Contact 180g LP (Kapp-$14.99)
180 gram vinyl reissue, originally released in 1969. Officially licensed through Universal. "Contact is Silver Apples' best work -- hinting at the shock mentality of Suicide, the drone of Spacemen 3, and the electronic dalliance of Stereolab decades later." -- The Seattle Stranger

VERONICA FALLS-Found Love in a Graveyard 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
"So this is what the afterlife looks like for the teenage bedroom-buried, cassette-tape entombed legacy of C86, now possessing a new generation of beautiful bookworms after its initial believers let slip their hopeful dreams of forever – a little more world-worn and ghostly palloured than its precursor but clutching the same cosy, sunday morning pop sensibility to its chest all the same. “Found Love In A Graveyard” by London’s sore-hearted collectors of all things group harmonised and unrequitedly in love VERONICA FALLS sees the rosy-cheeked, cardigan chaste pinup of countless 7” single sleeves ago revisited twenty years on and we find her in a strange state – powerlessly possessed in a torn wedding dress, tearing flowers to pieces by the grave of some morbidly handsome beau who jilted her for another world altogether. You get the feeling she’ll pull through though, and by the time the chorus (a real, dead-raising miracle of a chorus no less) drops, the declaration of “I’m Br
oken Hearted” sounds less the weepy drivel of a person driven to distraction and more a declaration of empowerment and pride. You’ve got to suffer to sing the blues, or something like that." -Transparent.

WILD NOTHING-Summer Holiday 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
Wild Nothing is the solo project of Virginia born Jack Tatum, who’s music is the product of an unhealthy obsession with nostalgia. Equal parts teenage wasteland and inexplicable regret, his songs are the kind that could only be made by the young at heart. Unlike the current herd of one-man bedroom bands, Tatum creates complex textural environments that aim for something higher. Melodies that yearn to stay with you. Warped interpretations of Johnny Marr’s guitar work and The Cure’s careful synth arrangements. Dreamy, catchy, and intriguing. Here’s to missing your youth.

ELECTRIC POP GROUP-Seconds CD (matinee-$11.99)
Sensational sophomore album from Swedish pop heroes The Electric Pop Group! Following the success of the band’s self-released debut in 2006 and the very well received ‘Sunrise’ EP for Matinée in 2008, the band is back with ten magnificent new recordings that solidify their status as heir apparent to the pop throne once held by Matinée favorites Harper Lee and Sarah Records legends Brighter.
The new album ‘Seconds’ is a study in multilayered, shimmering pop featuring jangling electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and prominent keyboards plus rich bursts of tambourine, strings and other nice instrumentation. Among the album’s highlights, lead track ‘Not By Another’ is a melodic love song with chiming guitars, while ‘Out Of Sight’ mixes keyboards and guitars in an infectious pop hit with fantastic vocals and a soaring chorus.
One of the newest songs on the album, ‘The Way It Used To Do’ is catchy, continental pop with keyboards, jangling guitars, and an addictive chorus that recalls early Acid House Kings. Meanwhile, the band demonstrates it can also deliver modern shoegaze classics with ‘The Best of Times’ showcasing a muti-layered, hazy melancholy with hypnotic percussion.
The album also includes a new recording of ‘My Only Inspiration’, an Electric Pop Group favorite that first appeared on the ‘Matinée Hit Parade’ compilation in 2007, while ‘Into Thin Air’ features more chiming guitars and melodies-a-plenty and ‘We Never Made Up Our Minds’ is an especially beautiful, orchestral number.
An outstanding new entry to the Matinée discography, ‘Seconds’ is glistening jangle pop genius perfect for fans of Brighter, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Field Mice or Harper Lee.

NORTHERN PORTRAIT-Criminal Art Lovers CD (Matinee-$11.99)
Highly anticipated debut album from distinguished Danish band Northern Portrait! Following the very well received ‘Fallen Aristocracy’ and ‘Napoleon Sweetheart’ EPs in 2008, the band spent most of 2009 refining its live set with shows in the UK, Denmark, Germany and USA including performances at the prestigious San Francisco Popfest and Indietracks Festival. These shows also provided an opportunity to preview some of the songs that comprise ‘Criminal Art Lovers’ to favorable response. The resulting ten track album is a triumph for the band that should help solidify their status as one of indiepop’s most loved new bands.
Lead track ‘The Münchhausen in Me’ starts things off in decidedly jangling fashion with 12-string guitars plus autoharp and glockenspiel adding a special touch to the sound. Navigating between truth and semi-truth can be a difficult thing—sometimes fainting might be the only way out. ‘When Goodness Falls’ is an incredibly catchy song about people who are scared to remain true to themselves, and what a wonderful feeling it is to go against their will and completely, intentionally disappoint them. Musically bright, the song is the natural heir to the Smiths classic ‘This Charming Man’.
Third track ‘Crazy’ is the only previously released song on the album, although this is a slightly different mix than the one contained on the debut single. The mix of acoustic and electric Rickenbackers jangle in all the right places and the vocals suit the music perfectly. A song that has been around since the very first days of Northern Portrait, it is a modern pop classic that has been incredibly well received for good reason.
‘The Operation Worked But The Patient Died’ is the sound of Northern Portrait trying to write a British Sea Power song. With a touch of The La's and Sleeper-esque guitars, the song adds a dose of essential drama to the album. Meanwhile, superb title track ‘Criminal Art Lovers’ is a song about beatniks on picnics, busy tourists, and the comfy life…or perhaps just a not-so-good day at the office. With nice bursts of percussion, the song builds to an extraordinarily melodic ending that will have you reaching straight for the repeat button.
Side two begins with lush guitar track ‘Life Returns To Normal.’ Lyrically the song draws upon a poem about Volvo Estate cars, perhaps providing the line “my estate will take you anywhere” a clever double meaning. In any event, the song is another classic that will have you dancing by the end. This will serve you well as the album continues with ‘Murder Weapon’ keeping things sonically upbeat, even if the song is inspired by an article in British Vogue about women's sophisticated cruelty towards one other when it comes to fashion and style.
‘What Happens Next?’ is an up-tempo and energetic song about the collision of people with completely different agendas. It is one of the earliest Northern Portrait songs, initially recorded with the two tracks that would go on to serve as lead tracks for the band’s initial EPs. Returning to the same rhythm as 'When Goodness Falls', the song is a favorite of the Northern Portrait live repertoire.
With its slow build-up and rich sound, ‘That's When My Headaches Begin’ has a certain widescreen feel to it that takes the listener somewhere beyond the other tunes found on the album. Musically inspired by early Suede, the lyrics return to the theme from the Napoleon Sweetheart EP track 'In An Empty Hotel'. Ending the record on a positive note, ‘New Favourite Moment’ is a catchy, Rickenbacker dance track with an instrumental chorus, so people won’t have to learn any lyrics and can focus on twisting their bodies instead! Just try to resist…
Building on the amazing promise demonstrated by its two EPs, Northern Portrait have delivered the consummate debut album as ‘Criminal Art Lovers’ is the first certified album of the year contender for 2010.

PALE SUNDAY-Shooting Star EP CD (Matinee-$6.99)
Fantastic new single from adored Brazilian indiepop heroes Pale Sunday! The band debuted on Matinée in 2003 with the incredibly popular single ‘A Weekend with Jane’ and made loads of new friends with their 2005 album ‘Summertime?’ The first new recordings from the band in over four years, the exclusive new ‘Shooting Star’ EP proves the band still has the gift of writing modern indiepop classics with superb melodies and sing-along choruses.
The title track is an infectious pop hit with jangling guitars, an especially strong melody and nice harmonies. It’s a catchy burst of summertime any time of the year. ‘Are You Scared To Get Happy?’ proves the band has more than a few shoegaze records in their record collection, layering in fuzzy Teenage Fanclub-esque guitar parts and building to a multilayered orchestral ending with strings and more harmonies. ‘Before I Found You’ is shimmering pop at its best with more jangling guitar goodness, perfect melodies, handclaps, and tambourines, while ‘Unknown Half’ mixes multiple guitars with keyboards and other nice instrumentation to conclude the EP.
With four instantly memorable songs, ‘Shooting Star’ is a dazzling new release for Matinée and a very welcome return for Pale Sunday! Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket.

SPC ECO-SPC ECO 3-D (Japanese Version) CD (Quince-$13.99)
Dean Garcia (Curve) returns with SPC ECO, a nu-gaze outfit whose singer is none other than Dean’s daughter Rose Berlin. “SPC ECO 3-D” is their first album and features Rose’s angelic vocals, heavy bass grooves, twinkling keyboards, guitar noise, and British styled electro beats. Joey Levenson (So Young) provides guitar fx, and the resulting amalgam is a colorful and shimmering shoegaze music of sugary pop goodness. The Japanese edition of the album includes three bonus tracks: two remixes plus “Silver Clouds,” an exclusive track featuring Andy Bell (Ride/Oasis).

** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

ALBUM LEAF-A Chorus of Storytellers CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
A Chorus of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio just outside of Seattle. It was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson. Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album Into the Blue Again was recorded. There is, however, one fundamental difference between this and every other album The Album Leaf has ever recorded. For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is their best record yet.

BEACH HOUSE-Teen Dream CD+DVD (Sub Pop-$14.99)
Recorded in upstate New York, in a converted church called Dreamland with producer/engineer Chris Coady (who has worked with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead, and a bunch of others) Teen Dream is the third album from the Baltimore-based duo Beach House, and their Sub Pop debut. The new album gives voice to a full universe of unbridled imagination, and the manifestation of Teen Dream has been a welcomed and all-consuming obsession for Beach House the past 9-12 months. Both the CD and LP formats of Teen Dream will arrive packaged with a companion DVD featuring a video for each song on the album, each by a different director.

BRIM LISKI-s/t CD (Latenight Weeknight-$7.99)
This is Brim Liski. Happy depression. Electronic doom painted over with shimmering vocal layers and symphonic guitar tones. Dark, limitless night music perfect for driving down an endless moon drenched highway. Comprised of various underground producers in the US and The Netherlands, the project started in late 2008 and slowly but surely became an organic musical hydra. The debut release finds itself spanning eras of dark musical passages, polyrhythmic dance beats and deep, moving basslines all in which are inspired by the recent death of love, while also influenced by the blinding light of new beginnings.

MAÑANA-Interruptions CD (Quince-$13.99)
With 'Interruptions', Swiss 5-piece Mañana take us on an eclectic journey through their very own universe, thriving on contrasts and experiments. Their powerful, stirring and epic soundscapes can occasionally be referenced to influences like Mew and Sigur Ros. The driving drumbeats serve as a solid basis on which the keyboards and guitars can develop their unique spaces and the freedom to spin out of control at the right moment. And in the middle of this is Manuel Bürkli's powerful yet fragile voice as the focal point of their music. Produced by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83, Bjork).
"Mañana's music does a lot to you. It triggers things in your head and deep inside, in your heart. 'Make A Tiger' is outstanding proof of that — a song that sends you on a far-away trip, yet never leaves you alone. This touches me, and there's no higher compliment I could pay to music." - Markus Kavka, VJ and Producer, MTV Networks Germany

MIXTAPES & CELLMATES-Rox CD (Quince-$13.99)
Stockholm combo Mixtapes & Cellmates return with “Rox,” their highly anticipated second album. Previous albums and EPs were compared with The Radio Dept and Postal Service. The band is now a 5 piece with a new drummer and three lead singers. While the rock elements of guitar feedback, up-down rhythms, and judicious keyboard usage hint at the influence of Primal Scream’s “Give Out But Don’t Give Up”, the group’s distinct melodies and fantastic song writing are intact and better than ever. “Rox” was engineered by Johan Gustafsson (Last Days of April) and recorded at Studio Grondahl. The Japanese edition of Rox features two exclusive bonus tracks: “Summer” and “Apoidea.”

RETRIBUTION GOSPEL CHOIR-2 CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
Retribution Gospel Choir is a rock trio founded in 2007. The group features Alan Sparhawk on guitar and vocals, Steve Garrington on bass and Eric Pollard on drums and vocals. Alan also fronts the band Low with his wife, Mimi Parker, and Steve also plays bass in Low. 2 is Retribution Gospel Choir's 2nd full-length and Sub Pop debut! Eric Swanson recorded these performances at Sacred Heart Studio in Duluth, Minnesota, and Matt Beckley mixed the recordings at Faux Rock in Sherman Oaks, California.

VARIOUS ARTISTS-The Matinee Grand Prix CD ($Matinee-$11.99)
Brilliant new collection of songs from Matinée’s truly international coterie of popstars. The disc kicks off with a firm favorite from Denmark’s Northern Portrait entitled ‘Stirling Moss’ which establishes a car racing theme rather nicely. Scottish popkids Strawberry Whiplash answer the challenge with new smash ‘Boy In The Bubble Car,’ while Australian legends The Lucksmiths deliver their swansong recording with the predictably stunning ‘Get-to-bed Birds.’
Sweden’s The Electric Pop Group is represented with perhaps their strongest song to date ‘Believers,’ while Clay Hips—American expats living in Germany and Ireland—don’t disappoint channeling their inner Pet Shop Boys with ‘Disappointed.’ The album’s centerpoint sees the return of England’s mighty Tender Trap after four years with the new classic ‘Danger Overboard,’ and Australia has its second contender with the very welcome return of Simpático and new favorite ‘Australian Idle.’
Finland’s Cats on Fire begin the year with a fantastic new song called ‘The Hague,’ while Scotland is back in fine form with Bubblegum Lemonade and ‘Cuts Like A Dream.’ Finally, American hipsters Math and Physics Club break a two-year silence with a great new song called ‘I Keep To Myself,’ and Australia’s The Guild League soundtrack the final lap of the compilation with the lovely ‘Bookmark.’
Demonstrating the continuing strength of the label’s roster, this timeless collection is a vital release for the Matinée faithful and a fantastic introduction to some of the best indie bands of today.

DAVID BOWIE-Hunky Dory 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$19.99)
Hunky Dory finds Bowie camping it up outrageously through a mixture of cabaret piano, coquettish lyrics and soaring vocals. "After the freakish hard rock of The Man Who Sold the World, David Bowie returned to singer/songwriter territory on Hunky Dory. Not only did the album boast more folky songs ("Song for Bob Dylan," "The Bewlay Brothers"), but he again flirted with Anthony Newley-esque dancehall music ("Kooks," "Fill Your Heart"), seemingly leaving heavy metal behind. As a result, Hunky Dory is a kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, tied together only by Bowie's sense of vision: a sweeping, cinematic mélange of high and low art, ambiguous sexuality, kitsch, and class. Mick Ronson's guitar is pushed to the back, leaving Rick Wakeman's cabaret piano to dominate the sound of the album. The subdued support accentuates the depth of Bowie's material, whether it's the revamped Tin Pan Alley of "Changes," the Neil Young homage "Quicksand," the soaring "Life on Mars?," the rolling, v
aguely homosexual anthem "Oh! You Pretty Things," or the dark acoustic rocker "Andy Warhol." On the surface, such a wide range of styles and sounds would make an album incoherent, but Bowie's improved songwriting and determined sense of style instead made Hunky Dory a touchstone for reinterpreting pop's traditions into fresh, postmodern pop music." - AMG

DAVID BOWIE-Ziggy Stardust 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$19.99)
"Borrowing heavily from Marc Bolan's glam rock and the future shock of A Clockwork Orange, David Bowie reached back to the heavy rock of The Man Who Sold the World for The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie's fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread. Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam. Mick Ronson plays with a maverick flair that invigorates rockers like "Suffragette City," "Moonage Daydream," and "Hang Onto Yourself," while "Lady Stardust," "Five Years," and "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" have a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard
of in rock & roll. And that self-conscious sense of theater is part of the reason why Ziggy Stardust sounds so foreign. Bowie succeeds not in spite of his pretensions but because of them, and Ziggy Stardust — familiar in structure, but alien in performance — is the first time his vision and execution met in such a grand, sweeping fashion." - AMG

NIRVANA-Bleach DELUXE 2xLP (Sub Pop-$26.99)
Marking the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana's debut album, Sub Pop will re-issue the Platinum Certified Bleach on November 3, 2009. This expanded CD/double-LP will include a never-before-released live performance, and special packaging.
Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack Endino at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988 and January 1989, Bleach was released in June of '89 and remains unequivocally/unsurprisingly Sub Pop's very favorite Nirvana full-length. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide success of their 1991 sophomore effort, Nevermind. Subsequently Bleach went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This 20th Anniversary Edition has been re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a session overseen by producer Jack Endino.
This edition will include an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features performances of "Love Buzz," "About a Girl" and a cover of The Vaselines' song "Molly's Lips" and has been re-mixed from the original tapes by Endino (complete track listing below). A 52-page CD /16-page LP booklet which includes candid photos of the band not previously released to the public will also be included in this deluxe edition.
A notice to Vinyl-buyers: this is a very weighty collection of records and images and nice packaging. ADDITIONAL SHIPPING RATES WILL APPLY!!
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE-Campfire Songs CD (Paw Tracks-$12.99)
Paw Tracks is proud to present the reissue of Animal Collective's 2003 album Campfire Songs. Since the CD's original issue on catsup plate recently went out of print it is our intention to simply keep the cd in print for as long as possible. An idea originally thought up by Dave Portner and Noah Lennox while in college, Campfire Songs is not a record of songs sung around a campfire but a record that hints at songs emerging from the fire itself: "We wanted to give the music the feeling and atmosphere of the outdoors and the warmth of a fire, so people could bring it indoors."

BRILLIANT COLORS-Introducing CD (Slumberland-$12.99)
Singer / guitarist Jess Scott started Brilliant Colors in early 2007, and she's been mighty busy since then. After a steady stream of line-up changes, Scott has finally settled on a permanent line-up with the addition of East Coast transplants Diane Anastasio and Michelle Hill (a veteran of a number of Bay Area underground punk outfits, as well as touring guitarist for legendary UK punk / dub group The Slits!), in the meantime sharing bills with fellow Bay Area acts Nodzzz, Grass Widow, and Ty Segall and opening for the likes of The Urinals and The Homosexuals. Following up two sold-out singles (on Make a Mess and Captured Tracks) and mounting fervor from all corners of the pop underground blog-o-world, Brilliant Colors' debut album is as an undeniable contender for best pop record of 2009. Introducing, recorded in Portland, Oregon by Mississippi Records' Alex Yusimov, marks a great leap forward for Brilliant Colors. The band has honed their songwriting to a fine edge, delive
ring ten tracks of sharp, subtly catchy indie pop that finds them more assuredly rounding out the corners of their DIY-punk-meets-Shop Assistants, '78-'86 pop collision. Opener "I Searched," a fully formed pop classic, drifts through the speakers on the back a wistful, echoey vocal, while "Absolutely Anything" picks up the pace with a buzzing guitar attack and a chorus hook that would make Joey Ramone proud. The trio is at their best on "Over There" and "Yell in the Air," tunes emblematic of the perfect middle ground Scott has struck between the crunch and drive of punk and the spiky DIY melodicism of early Rough Trade and Flying Nun bands. Introducing is a sharp debut album packed with taut guitar buzz and dreamy melodies, neatly expanding on the promise of those in-demand 7-inch singles. Clocking in at barely twenty-four minutes, its focus and concision perfectly encapsulate where pop should be in 2009. Side-stepping all the indie pigeonholes, Brilliant Colors have produced a scrappy gem of a record.

BILL FAY-Still Some Light 2xCD (Coptic Cat-$15.99)
Singer/songwriter Bill Fay released two brilliant but poor-selling albums between 1967 and 1971 before disappearing from the public eye. He spent much of the following decade writing, rehearsing, and occasionally performing--all with no contract or record company support. In recent years, reissues of his now-sought-after original albums along with a pair of releases containing previously unreleased material have renewed interest in the English artist. Coptic Cat is pleased to announce the release of Fay's long-awaited next collection of old and new music.
Still Some Light consists of 43 songs on two CD with a total playing time of over two hours. It comes in a full-color six-panel digipak with a 24-page booklet of extensive notes, archival photos, and handwritten lyrics to all the tracks. The cover was painted by the musician's brother John Fay.
The first CD, titled Piano, Guitar, Bass & Drums, consists of studio recordings, sourced from archival tapes, with Ray Russell on guitar, Alan Rushton on drums and Daryl Runswick on bass. The 1970 tracks are prior to the recording of the Time of the Last Persecution album and contain alternative versions of songs on that album, two tracks from Fay's self-titled debut album, and previously unreleased songs. The 1971 material is also previously unreleased. The second CD, Still Some Light, is a home-recorded studio album from 2009.

FOUR TET-There Is Love In You CD (Domino-$13.99)
There Is Love In You is Four Tet's first full-length album in over four years and is his fifth album to date.

PANTS YELL-Received Pronunciation CD (Slumberland-$12.99)
Life is not a series of epic epiphanies and seismic milestones, but a succession of quiet weeks and months, interrupted at rare intervals--if one is lucky--by fleeting moments of significance or grace: a new crush, a break-up, the discovery of a particularly good book or song or film, an intense conversation with a friend that you know you won't forget. Some of the best pop bands of the past several decades have made it their mission to evoke, in their words and in their music, the understated beauty of everyday living. Think of the Go-Betweens, who found boundless romantic possibility in going for a walk or spending the night in; or Belle and Sebastian's hushed remembrances of little failures and lessons learned and sympathetic portraits of young misfits struggling to make sense of the world. Pants Yell!, despite their misleadingly emphatic (and eternally mysterious) name, belong to this crucial lineage. Together since 2003, when they formed at a Boston art school, the trio
is the vehicle for singer-guitarist Andrew Churchman's modestly proportioned but perfectly realized songs. Abetted by co-founding bassist Sterling Bryant and drummer Casey Keenan (who joined in 2007), his two- and three-minute marvels draw power from restraint and poetry from plainspoken observation--in short, they are greater than the sum of their parts. Not for nothing did Churchman name the band's last album Alison Statton, in honor of the former Young Marble Giants / Weekend singer, who understood better than most that a whisper, dispensed properly, is always more affecting than a scream. Alison Statton, the third Pants Yell! album, brought the band unprecedented critical and popular success internationally. And now they've come to rest at their spiritual home, Slumberland Records, with its remarkable follow-up, Received Pronunciation. In nine songs and 26 minutes, and without ever deploying a distortion pedal, they make a greater emotional impact than an album twice as long and at double the volume. Which isn't to say the album lacks for visceral sonic thrills--hear "Someone Loves You" build to an ecstatic climax that perfectly justifies the song's title, or the elegant guitar solo that launches "Cold Hands" skyward. This is pop that doesn't need to raise its voice or shake its fist; it wins over with its mind and its heart.

SPOON-Transference CD (Merge-$14.99)
Since the band's 1994 inception in Austin TX, Spoon has amassed one of the most loyal and steadily growing followings in indie rock, with classic albums like Telephono (1996), A Series of Sneaks (1998) Girls Can Tell (2001), Kill The Moonlight (2002) and Gimme Fiction (2005) each doubling their predecessors' sales. THE NEW YORKER has called Spoon "timeless," INTERVIEW has described the band as "irresistible," and PLAYBOY has hailed its songs' "timeless beauty." On January 19, Transference will give Spoon fans new and old alike eleven more reasons to celebrate.

THE BATS-Don't You Rise 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
The Bats are legends of New Zealand music, standing tall alongside contemporaries The Clean and The Chills as linchpins of the Flying Nun label and the Dunedin / Christchurch scene. Over the course of 25 years, seven albums, and four world tours, the original line-up of Robert Scott, Malcolm Grant, Paul Kean, and Kaye Woodward remains intact and still creates vital, pastoral pop gems. Combining Scott's mantric-like guitar pick and strum, bouncing bass with a twist from Kean, melodic hooks from Woodward on guitar, and Grant's snappy beats, the combination of musical ingredients works perfectly--effortlessly. The band's reputation is sterling; based on legendary albums like Daddy's Highway and Silverbeet and their energetic live shows, The Bats have an enthusiastic worldwide fanbase who treasure the band's continued excellence. Don't You Rise gathers up four tunes from 1998 and 2003, helping to complete the discographical picture leading up to their most recent album, The Guilt
y Office. With the electric violin of Alastair Galbraith (who last featured on The Bats' Law of Things), "That's How You'll Find Me" has a mesmerizing folk-pop groove and would fit in perfectly on any classic Bats album. "You Don't Belong" is a moody gem, while the country-inflected strum of "Don't You Rise" is a live favorite. "Face Inside the Sun" rounds out the record in fine form, a mid-tempo sing-along that sounds straight off Daddy's Highway. A pretty special EP then, and ample evidence that 25 years after forming, The Bats own their legendary status.

BEACHNIKS-s/t 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
Four songs about the summer delivered to you in the early winter. Fuzzy bubblegum 4-track pop. Features members of CRYSTAL STILTS and GERMAN MEASLES. Includes a poster sleeve. "The Worst Dressed Band in New York."

CHRISTMAS ISLAND-Blackout Summer LP (In the Red-$12.99)
There are actually three Christmas Islands: one off the coast of Australia, one in the Pacific Ocean (which also goes by the name Kiritimati), and one whose incredible self-titled debut album is on In The Red. Hailing from sunny San Diego, California, Christmas Island plays music that on the surface is happy and poppy. There is a dark undercurrent to their brand of lo-fi pop punk--it is joyous and almost twee while secretly depressed and deeply disturbed. Citing Tronics, Urinals, Television Personalities, The Clean, Versatile Newts, and The Fall as influences, Christmas Island is Beach Boys-style, sunny Southern Californian pop by way of the late-'70s / early-'80s UK DIY scene. "... the band has a subtle charm that mixes sunny California harmonies with a nod toward the garage in the vein of Kiwi poppers like The Clean." --Raven Sings the Blues

GIRLS AT DAWN-s/t 12" (Captured Tracks-$12.99)
Right on the the heels of their debut 7-inch on HoZac comes this four-song 12-inch EP. Drawing from post-punk, psychedelic and ‘60s pop influences, these three girls from Brooklyn make haunting melodies bridged with there/not-there ghostly arrangements.

MAZZY STAR-She Hangs Brightly LP (Plain-$17.99)
MAZZY STAR, essentially the duo of DAVID ROBACK (RAIN PARADE) and HOPE SANDOVAL, formed in 1989 out of the ashes of OPAL, Roback’s previous band with former Dream Syndicate member Kendra Smith. She Hangs Brightly, their debut album was originally released on Rough Trade in 1990. A dreamy, psychedelic affair every bit as good as their sophomore breakout LP.

THEE OH SEES-The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In LP (In the Red-$12.99)
Thee Oh Sees (OCS) began as songwriter / singer / guitarist John Dwyer's outlet for the experimental instrumentals he was producing in his home studio. Dwyer, who hails from Providence, RI, has been active on the San Francisco indie scene since the late '90s, working with The Coachwhips, Hospitals, Pink & Brown, Yikes, Dig That Body Up It's Alive, and Swords & Sandals, among others. He formed OCS (which is an acronym for Orinoka Crash Suite, Orange County Sound, or whatever Dwyer decided on any given day) to release a string of soundscapes and moody pieces that were decidedly lower key than his previous projects. In time, OCS morphed into an actual band, working under a flurry of names (most notably the Oh Sees or the Ohsees) and eventually settling on Thee Oh Sees. Sounding a bit like The Mamas & The Papas run through a seriously bent garage blender, this line-up features Dwyer on guitar and vocals, Brigid Dawson on vocals and tambourine, Petey Dammit on bass, and Mike Shoun
on drums. The band signed with the German Tomlab label and released The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In in 2008. This record marked the first recorded appearance of the newly harder rocking version of the band and was immediately met with an enthusiastic response by fans and rock scribes. It went out of print after its initial pressing sold out quickly, and In The Red is pleased to announce the re-release of this incredible album on vinyl. Music like this is best enjoyed when spun on a turntable, and the gorgeous cover art can only be properly appreciated at 12 inches by 12 inches. "A simulacrum of 1960s Bay Area psychedelics without the marathon solos, in its own way, Master's Bedroom can be as hypnotic and mesmeric as any drone album."

PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART-Higher Than The Stars REMIX VERSION 12" (Slumberland-$7.99)
This 12-inch features the incredible Balearic dub-disco remix from ace UK producers Saint Etienne, plus an exclusive Skanfrom Mix. Spacey yet totally danceable, it's certain to burn up the dancefloor.

THE ROPERS-I Don't Mind 7" (Slumberland-$4.99)
It's ridiculous that this rare, OOP single is still available from a certain distributor, but it's true! Two incredible noisepop songs from 1994, including their alltime best track (IMO), It's So Strange, on the flip.

FRANKIE ROSE-Thee Only One 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
As a founding member, songwriter, instrumentalist, and vocalist in Vivian Girls and drummer and occasional vocalist in Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose has been an integral part of two of the most highly acclaimed and influential groups to come out of Brooklyn's still-vital music scene in the past several years. Her solo project not only reflects the earmarks of both those groups, but also reveals her as a fully-formed artist in her own right. Ms. Rose's music is haunted by the ghosts of '60s girl group Brill Building and '80s and '90s noise-pop in equal measure. It's a spooky, lovely sound--her ethereal yet affectation-free voice swirling in a sea of church-like harmonies over a bed of tambourines, bells, and propulsive drumming. Recalling in spirit groups like The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine, Rose's music is timeless and immediate, both deeply personal and completely universal. Pitchfork cited "Where Do You Run To?" as one of the best songs of 2008, and after much anticipa
tion Slumberland presents Rose's debut single. Recorded at Marlborough Farms Studio with Gary Olson, Kyle Forrester, and Crystal Stilts' J.B. Townsend, "Thee Only One" is a perfect slice of surf-tinged noise-pop. Laden with rumbling reverb and tangy guitar twang, it's an ideal tune with which to wrap up another (almost) endless summer. On the flip, "Hollow Life" is a more subdued affair--spectral psychedelia that resembles nothing so much as Opal's Kendra Smith at her most haunting. Building to a mesmerizing crescendo, "Hollow Life" is a sublime complement to "Thee Only One," rounding out this single in fine fashion.

SARANDON / THE MEMBRANES - Spike Milligan's Tape Recorder 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
Flash back... England, 1984 A dark and ghostly land littered with the bodies of Thatcher's unwanted The stench was bad and the view was bleak Out of the gloom came a thunderous cacophony The Blackpool Tower shook to its foundations Could this be the Devil's own band? England, 2009 A dark and ghostly land littered with the bodies of Brown's unneeded The stench is bad and the view is bleak Out of the gloom comes a thunderous cacophony Canary Wharf shakes to its foundations Has the Devil returned with a brand new band? Brown, Crayola A trio of badass post-everythings who make one hell of a beautiful racket Slumberland Records presents Spike Milligan's Tape Recorder to those who want to feel the history then and the history now. Keep beating the pulp from the pop-rock schlock hog. This single supports and is supported by the publication of Death to Trad Rock by The Membranes' John Robb: 900 pages that cover nearly 50 bands in that defiant, discordant DIY underground of bands, fanzines, and venues that sustained a remarkable and highly original scene of bands--perhaps the last stand of DIY culture in the UK.

GREGORY WEBSTER-Promised Land 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
Gregory Webster has recorded for pretty impressive scene-setting labels over the past 25 years, including seminal UK indie labels Creation, Sarah Records, and The Subway Organisation, plus indie-pop bastions from Australia to the USA. Now Slumberland Records is pleased to join in the fun. Webster first emerged during the mid-'80s UK C86 scene with Razorcuts, whose sound hit somewhere between the 12-string heavy folk-rock of mid-'60s L.A. and the unique pop sensibilities of UK post-punk. The Carousel soon followed, a gorgeously out-of-time psych-folk duo formed with Talulah Gosh founding member Elizabeth Price. After the acoustic simplicity of his 1995 debut solo LP, My Wicked Wicked Ways, Webster put together perhaps his most prolific (and noisy) outfit, Sportique, with ex-TV Personality Mark Flunder and Heavenly's Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey. His debut Slumberland single is his first solo recording for almost 15 years. On "Promised Land," Webster returns to matters of the
heart, utilizing the acoustic-based sound familiar to those who have seen his regular PopFest performances in recent years. Although never foolish enough to adopt the mannerisms of another culture as his own, Webster's love of American folk and country greats such as Willie Nelson and Hank Williams clearly shines through. In fact, the B-side is a radically different interpretation of Williams' lesser-known classic "Won't You Sometimes Think of Me?" Simplicity rules throughout, complementing the naked honestly of the songwriting. Webster's signature 12-string sound is augmented by haunting harmonium accompaniment from The Birthday Girl (Vatican Cellars) and beautifully uplifting vocal flourishes provided by Pam Perry of Slumberland's own legendary Black Tambourine. As Webster dreams of love away from the glare of city lights, take a ride out to the country with him on this beautifully packaged return to vinyl.

HOLOPAW-Oh Glory, Oh Wilderness LP (Obscurist Press-$9.99)
Unlike lesser bands, John writes lyrics and then gets the band to create sublime music around them. This particular incarnation of Holopaw roars a little more, making the vocals all the sweeter. 10 songs here of singular, stunning lyricism that transcend the ghettoes of indie-rock, Americana and/or gay singer-songwriter. Would you believe the record was previously titled All Holes. No Glory? Holopaw musically plays with tensions: lulling strings are undercut by anxious guitars, lilting "la's" turn sinister and demanding. In "Little Stallion with a Glass Jaw" horn blasts announce a charge that is quickly clipped to a hush. The bounce of "P-a-l-o-m-i-n-e" stumbles towards chaos at the bridge only to be righted by a whimsical Bay City Rollers-esque chant. The last song on the record, "The Hobbyist and the Conductor (Avalanche)" begins with bright, carillon chimes that stand in stark contrast to the thunderous din that ends the song like a slack jawed finale to a fireworks displ
ay. Triumphant "la's" punch through the smoke and ash to have the final say.

NERVOUS SYSTEMS-Needs Medicines LP (Obscurist Press-$9.99)
Recorded by Jeremy Scott (MAHOGANY) at Civil Defense (Vivian Girls, etc). Also features Josh Ney (BRITTLE STARS) on drums. "Maybe we're all convinced that our friends write superior songs. But Nervous Systems do. If Boyracer really is retiring, then I'm glad that Nervous Systems are still pounding out short, biting sets of noisy pop songs. Sound Effect for Deafening Silence has made me cry on more than one occasion. And Joe's lyrics are proof-positive that our state-university English degrees are not entirely wasted. Making pop a threat again."

AVEY TARE & KRIA BREKKAN-Pullhair Rubeye CD (Paw Tracks-$12.99)
Now in on CD for the first time! AVEY TARE is DAVID PORTNER of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE and KRIA BREKKAN is KRISTIN ANNA VALTYSDOTTIR formerly of MUM. Now married, the duo release their debut album together--a motley collection of fun and somber songs, some instrumental, textured and trancelike. Other songs are lyrically based, calmer and more introspective, and sound like direct transmissions from within. Eight songs in all.

THE CLEAN-Mister Pop CD (merge-$13.99)
In 1978, The Clean were the seeds of New Zealand punk. They carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in, and their influence resonated not only in NZ but around the world. This summer's Mister Pop sees The Clean continue the great pop pastiche. Circus ragas ("Moonjumper"), hazy sunset anthems ("In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul"), and the loose Dada approach to wordsmithery continue alongside "proper" lyrical forays and a few Autobahn-referential instro moments to boot("Tensile").

VAMPIRE WEEKEND-Contra LIMITED EDITION 2xCD (XL-$11.99)
Limited edition "Contra Megamelt" bonus CD, includes Contramelt A, Contramelt B, Cousinz (Toy Selectah Mex-More Remix). The highly anticipated follow-up to Vampire Weekend's critically hailed debut. Another criminally catchy masterpiece, Contra is loaded with the jingle-jangle rhythms the boys have become notorious for.

** YE OLDE TYME VINYL **

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE-Fall be Kind 12" (Domino-$11.99)
To close out an incredible 2009 for Animal Collective that saw the release of their most critically and commercially successful album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, comes the Fall Be Kind EP. The EP features 5 brand new studio tracks that are every bit as lush and beautiful as those found on Merriweather. The year of Animal Collective continues.

ANDREW BIRD'S BOWL OF FIRE-The Swimming Hour 2xLP (Rykodisc-$18.99)
Never before released on Vinyl, the third album from Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire The Swimming Hour will be released as a 2x Vinyl LP set (140 Gram vinyl / 45rpm). Now newly remastered under the watchful eyes of Bird himself, this album was produced by Mike Napolitano (Blind Melon, the Neville Brothers, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers) and is the final album to feature Bird's backing band, Bowl of Fire.

NEKO CASE-Middle Cyclone 180g 2xLP (Anti-$22.99)
180 gram double LP. Neko's many fans hang on her impressionistic lyrics, classic pop harmonics, and luxurious voice, and this album revels in all three. It fuses her longtime themes of nature versus man into a shining lyrical broadsword. Numerous guests include M. Ward, Garth Hudson of The Band, Sarah Harmer, and members of The New Pornographers, Los Lobos, Calexico, The Sadies, Visqueen, The Lilys, and Giant Sand.

FINAL FANTASY-Heartland 180g 2xLP (Domino-$18.99)
Heartland exists. The third Final Fantasy full-length and the first for Domino, it is the product of nine months work in four countries. Heartland is a fully orchestral record, designed to exist simultaneously as an album, a 45-minute piece of orchestral music and a set of songs for looped violin and voice.

FOUR TET-Love Cry 12" (Domino-$9.99)
Four Tet returns with the 'Love Cry' 12", the first single since his 2008 EP "Ringer". 'Love Cry' is an epic song of propulsive drums and hypnotic melodies that highlights Four Tet's turn towards dance music that the 'Ringer'EP (2008), foreshadowed. On the flip side is a new non-album b-side titled 'Our Bells'.

PASTELS/TENNISCOATS-Two Sunsets LP (Domino-$18.99)
The Pastels are from Glasgow and Tenniscoats from Tokyo. They have different sounds, but something in common too. The collaboration that eventually became the Two Sunsets album arose from a suggestion by Tenniscoats that some studio time be booked while they were in Glasgow, just to see what happens, and maybe to try to find out what it is that they have in common. It's melodic, optimistic and brilliant.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND-Contra 180g LP + LIMITED EDITION CD (XL-$13.99)
The highly anticipated follow-up to Vampire Weekend's critically hailed debut. Another criminally catchy masterpiece, Contra is loaded with the jingle-jangle rhythms the boys have become notorious for. Comes with Limited edition "Contra Megamelt" bonus CD, includes Contramelt A, Contramelt B, Cousinz (Toy Selectah Mex-More Remix).

VAMPIRE WEEKEND-Cousins 7" (XL-$4.99)
"Cousins" b|w "California English Part Two." Like the first album, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and unique musical vision that sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound. Primarily recorded in New York with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend. "Cousins" is the first single from their new album.
BAD APPLES-The Autumn People CD (Seksound-$11.99)
"Seksound is proud to announce that second album "The Autumn People" by Estonian indiepop group Bad Apples is released. Bad Apples started in 2003 as a bedroom project, young guy Henrik Esse was one mastermind behind it. Those recordings were heard by people behind local indielabel Seksound. Thanks to their support first album was recorded and a small group of musicians gathered around Henrik and Bad Apples. Supporting female vocalist is Helina Risti, on other instruments you'll find Rein Fuks (Pia Fraus, Popidiot), Tõnis Kenkmaa (Pia Fraus) and Rivo Järvsoo (Picnic). Their first album "When Colours Become Day And Night" was released in 2006. New album is less punkier, it's like baroque pop on indie world, getting influences from 60s music, from proper pop music to west coast psychedelia. Vivid examples would include pop giants Serge Gainsbourg, The Carpenters, Juan Garcia Esquivel. Henrik said that he wants to make estrada music (I can imagine it's huge musical area from Bur
t Bacharach classics to great soviet pop), but he doesn't have big orchestra. I can hear that idea materialize in Bad Apples way."
** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

CHAPTERHOUSE-Whirlpool: The Original Recordings CD (Space Age-$14.99)
Hailing from Reading in the late 80's/early 90's, Chapterhouse were leaders in the British Shoegazing movement. Rehearsing for well over a year before committing anything to demo for record companies, Chapterhouse quickly reached the top of their game with their peak arguably being a performance following Nirvana at the 1991 Reading Festival.Releases from Chapterhouse have been very hard to track down, due to being out-of-print for many years. Thankfully Space Age Recordings is about to rectify this. A re-issue of the original Whirlpool recordings from VHF Studios Rugby, Sawmills Cornwall, Stoneroom Studios London and Refuge in Reading. Featuring three extra tracks, including the never before released 'Thrasher' and longer/alternate mixes of 'Something More', 'Rain' and 'Guilt'.Tracklist:1. Breather 2. Pearl 3. Autosleeper 4. Treasure 5. Falling Down 6. April 7. Guilt 8. If You Want Me 9.. Something More (ambient version) 10. Rain (alternative version) 11. Thrasher 12. Guilt
(long version)

CLIENTELE-Bonfires on the Heath CD (Merge-$14.99)
A return to the group's roots; the dreamlike suburban landscapes 1st encountered in the early singles, their trippy sense of menace stronger now. Back in London, they've drawn on older traditions of English folk, which exist here side by side w/ the band's more familiar bossa & pop elements.

JAMES ORR COMPLEX-Chori’s Bundle CD (Ba Da Bing-$6.99)
A new album from Glasgow's CHRIS MACK under the JAMES ORR COMPLEX moniker. Known for his rock work in the band ESKA (Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai was once a member), Mack moves from the power of volume to the force of melody, as he brings his rock skills to the realm of folk. A collection of beautiful, skillfully finger-picked compositions that shoot off into tangents at some points, circle melodic phrases at others, and remain highly original at all times.

VARIOUS ARTISTS-In the Beginning There Was Rhythm CD (Soul Jazz-$17.99)
Warehouse find! One copy to be had… “This record features the groups that grew out of Punk and embraced dance music. These groups reflected the changing face of a British multi-cultural society in the aftermath of Punk, taking on new musical influences such as Black American dance music, Reggae and Electronic music. A Certain Ratio were one of the first groups to be signed to Factory Records in Manchester. Whilst New Order and later The Happy Mondays came to be the most successful Manchester bands associated with bringing dance music into their sound, it is their original label-mates, A Certain Ratio, who were in fact the first band to make the connection between punk and US Black dance music. It was A Certain Ratio who went to New York to record their first album that managed to mix a sparse Manchester bleakness in their sound along with US funk/dance elements. Finishing their album early they decided to offer their remaining studio time to a band who had recently opened for
them in New York called ESG. This became the first ESG album for 99 Records in New York. A Certain Ratio¹s early cover of the US group Banbarra's "Shack Up" features the amazing funk drumming of new recruit Donald Johnson. The Banbarra track had been popular on the Northern Soul circuit and whilst ACR made music that expressed the depressed, decaying Sound of an industrial city in decline they were also true to their other Nothern roots which in Manchester, Leeds, Wigan and other Northern towns had been for many years US Soul, Funk and R¹n¹B. ACR would carry these two sensibilities throughout their career going on to embrace many other styles of dance music along the way including Disco, Reggae, Jazz and Brazilian music. "Knife Slits Water" is a classic extended disco mix that managed to bring the punk 7" into the world of the dance 12". Sheffield became a focal point for DIY- electronic groups at the end of the 70s. The two most successful were Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League. Whilst Cabaret Voltaire stuck to their roots, signing to, and staying on, a fledgling new label, Rough Trade Records, The Human League would go on to international stardom as their experimental late-70s electronic music turned into 80s synth-pop. At the beginning, both these groups were interested in electronic music and how this music could be created within a punk ethos. Consequently, the all-electronic "Being Boiled" was created on a two-track tape recorder in mono! The Pop Group were the forerunners of what came to be known as The Bristol Sound. Other groups that have come out of this chain include Rip, Rig and Panic, Maximum Joy, Massive Attack and Portishead. The Pop Group mixed Punk, Funk, Disco and Reggae influences into a sound that many future bands would emulate. The group was produced by Denis Bovell, founding member of Matumbi, and one of punks favourite producers- He would also produce The Slits as well as continuing to work with people such as Linton Kwesi Johnson. When the Pop Group split up, two groups were formed Mark Stewart and The Mafia, and Rip,Rig and Panic which also featured a young Neneh Cherry. Out of Leeds came The Gang of Four. Again mixing Punk with dance and a large dose of Marxist philosophy, The Gang of Four were initially released on the Edinburgh based independent label, Fast (as were The Human League). As we can see, Punk music affected every city in England. Other scenes that emerged from this could be found in Liverpool (Teardrop Explodes, Wah! Heat, Echo and The Bunnymen) and of course Coventry where The Specials and Two-Tone began mixing up Ska and Punk to enormous success. London had got off to an early start with experimental-sound artists, This Heat. An early inspiration to many of the groups here, Camberwell¹s finest "24 Track Loop" is an incredible pre-curser to electronic, industrial music which sounds like an early version of Jungle. The concept of Industrial music would be taken a stage further by Throbbing Gristle who released music on their own Industrial Music label with the intent of pushing the boundary between music and noise. 23 Skidoo¹s interests stretched as far as Kung Fu, Gamelan Music, Language and Semiotics. Apart from this, they also managed to combine their musical influences like no-one else. On their classic album, "Seven Songs", Dance music, Experimental noise and Gamelan music combine in equal measures! "Vegas El Bandito" is taken from this record. "Coup" is one of the definitive dance records from this period. The line-up of the group features bass-player Sketch (who was also playing with Lynx) and original Jamaican Reggae hornsman Vin Gordon. Finally, The Slits were possibly the closest of these groups to The Sex Pistols. Although they did not record until 1978 they were actually part of the first wave of Punk groups (and were part of the inner circle of friends ofThe Sex Pistols). "In The Beginning, There Was Rhythm" (produced by Dennis Bovell) was indeed a prophesy of the music to follow Punk, where Punk would meet Funk, Reggae and Disco. The CD/record comes with many original photos and booklet talking about the time.”
ALOG/ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB – Split Series Vol 20 12” (FatCat-$12.99)
Another high quality, album-length release, the twentieth 12" in our acclaimed Split Series features Alog and Astral Social Club, two artists who've carved out very singular, purposeful paths for themselves. Here, both roll out their markedly different, yet somehow complimentary material, the unifying element being a heavily skewed outsider take on dancefloor electronica / techno.

BONNY PRINCE BILLY & THE PICKET LINE-Funtown Comedown LP (Sea Note-$16.99)
"In the wilds of greater outer Louisville Kentucky, there is a place called Funtown. You won't find it on any map, and you might just lose yourself in the woods out there trying to pin it down to the ground as well. Yet, Funtown is a place, as much as it is a place of mind. It was in this place, in a clearing and on the shores of a pond, that Bonny 'Prince' Billy and The Picket Line combined forces to play his music and their music and other people's music for a community of people to hear and watch and swing and step to. And they did! The songs of Bonny and The Picket Line and the others that they play are music for an afternoon, an evening, a night. Songs to echo off your head when you wake up the next morning -- but songs for a finite place, like Funtown; a place that you must leave behind you, and leave in your mind. So they left, and months went by, and a few more opportunities to play as one presented themselves. Including this one! Live in front of friends and family i
s the way of Funtown, so more and the same were invited when B'P'B and the TPL laid this one down for posterity. It was as fun as it sounds and more, in ways which have mostly been channeled down to the two sides of a groove, and presented to you here, wrapped twice in full-color sleeves. The Picket Line spark with their youth the picking traditions that some call bluegrass and some call music. They are comprised of Oscar Lee Riley Parsons, guitar and singing; Bob Dixon, electric guitar; Jonathan Kempf, mandolin; Cheyenne Mize, filled and singing; Danny Kiely, double bass; and of course, the Mayor of Funtown himself, Bradley Reinstedler, on banjo."
NICK DRAKE-Five Leaves Left 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$23.99)
Back in stock!! “It's little wonder why Drake felt frustrated at the lack of commercial success his music initially gathered, considering the help he had on his debut record. Besides fine production from Joe Boyd and assistance from folks like Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson and his unrelated bass counterpart from Pentangle, Danny Thompson, Drake also recruited school friend Robert Kirby to create most of the just-right string and wind arrangements. His own performance itself steered a careful balance between too-easy accessibility and maudlin self-reflection, combining the best of both worlds while avoiding the pitfalls on either side. The result was a fantastic debut appearance, and if the cult of Drake consistently reads more into his work than is perhaps deserved, Five Leaves Left is still a most successful effort. Having grown out of the amiable but derivative styles captured on the long-circulating series of bootleg home recordings, Drake assays his tunes with ju
st enough drama — world-weariness in the vocals, carefully paced playing, and more — to make it all work. His lyrics capture a subtle poetry of emotion, as on the pastoral semi-fantasia of "The Thoughts of Mary Jane," which his soft, articulate singing brings even more to the full. Sometimes he projects a little more clearly, as on the astonishing voice-and-strings combination "Way to Blue," while elsewhere he's not so clear, suggesting rather than outlining the mood. Understatement is the key to his songs and performances' general success, which makes the combination of his vocals and Rocky Dzidzornu's congas on "Three Hours" and the lovely "'Cello Song," to name two instances, so effective. Danny Thompson is the most regular side performer on the album, his bass work providing subtle heft while never standing in the way of the song — kudos well deserved for Boyd's production as well.” — Ned Raggett, AMG
BERT JANSCH-L.A. Turnaround LP+CD (Drag City-$16.99)
"Drag City is 'chuffed' to announce the limited-edition vinyl repressings of the three albums Bert Jansch recorded for The Famous Charisma Label in the 1970s: L.A. Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon and A Rare Conundrum, all of which have been out of print for decades and are among the most sought-after Jansch albums among fans and collectors. For these new releases, Bert Jansch handpicked the bonus material, much of which is previously unreleased. In some cases this material has been unheard by anyone in thirty years, including Bert himself. Bert Jansch was signed to Charisma by label boss Tony Stratton Smith in 1973, the year that Pentangle decided to go their separate ways. L.A. Turnaround appeared in September 1974 to great acclaim, hailed in the press as 'not far off from being the perfect album.' It was produced by former Monkee Mike Nesmith at Stratton Smith's house in the country in Crowbridge, Sussex, and in Los Angeles, and features not only Nesmith on guitar but a
lso pedal steel guitar maestro Red Rhodes, then in Nesmith's group. Rhodes' presence gives the album a unique sound enhancing Bert Jansch's own songwriting and performance skills with his haunting steel guitar. Other tracks on the album were completed by a group including Klaus Voorman on bass and, on certain songs, slide guitarist Jesse Ed Davis and fiddle player Byron Berline, giving this album an authentic L.A. '70s vibe, despite its UK origins." CD contains four bonus tracks and a short film.

BERT JANSCH-Santa Barbara Honeymoon LP+CD (Drag City-$16.99)
"Santa Barbara Honeymoon was recorded in America over a two-month period the following year and is a further departure for Bert Jansch, mixing his familiar style with a definitive L.A. over-the-top production sound, featuring backing singers and session players including horns, steel drums and a Dixieland band. This wasn't what most people wanted or expected from a Bert Jansch album, but time has kindly tucked the outrages of three decades ago beneath the intrigue of the sound, accenting some of Jansch's best songs of the period." Includes lyric insert; CD contains six bonus tracks.

BERT JANSCH-A Rare Conundrum LP+CD (Drag City-$16.99)
"A Rare Conundrum was recorded in a more familiar style in the UK during 1976 and released by Charisma in May 1977. The majority of the album features Bert with a group he'd put together consisting of Rod Clements on bass, Pick Withers on drums and Mike Piggott on violin. By the time the album was released the group had split after Clements returned to a re-formed Lindisfarne and Withers joined Dire Straits. A Rare Conundrum marked a return to a simpler style: it includes delicate instrumentals, Irish traditional songs, a couple of slow blues and some of Bert's most overlooked songs which look back to his childhood ('One To A Hundred') and his early days on the folk scene in Edinburgh ('Three Chord Trick' and 'Three Dreamers')." CD contains three bonus tracks.
LANDING-You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever Vol 5 7” (Geographic North-$7.99)
5th in the YCHYLF 7 inch series. Limited to 300 on white vinyl. 2 new songs from the dream-pop/space-gaze masters!! "Following Daylight Master" unfurls into a swarm of droney bass loops w/ bursts of spacey guitar drifts soaring in the distance, flashes of light against the layers of deep murmur. "Into the Hall," w/ its steady percussion, sounds a bit like an extension of "Gravitational 2" (off of Sphere); except this time w/ the addition of Aaron's mellow vocals & a bobbing guitar line.

ROBERTO CARLOS LANGE-Library Catalog Music Series: Music for Memory LP (Asthmatic Kitty-$11.99)
Roberto Carlos Lange (Helado Negro, Savath & Savalas) offers up his contribution to the Library Catalog Music Series. Music for Memory is like one giant crossfade going from one idea to the next in long rhythmic patterns. Its broken tape delays and found reel to reel tapes comprise the beats and the long drone music made from orchestrations that became re-assembled from short ideas to long ones.

LIGHTNING BOLT-Earthly Delights LP (Load-$12.99)
After scrapping two entire full lengths, LB is finally ready to unleash new music to the masses. Taking the lessons of extreme metal, blood-brother marrying them to expansive & explosive song form and applying it to Olympic training methods - "Earthly Delights" uses electric stimulus to shock smile technology to worldwide domes. This is what 2000 years of evolution & the invention of electric instrumentation introduced into the tank of hook force can do to you. This record has the sound of a ten piece band with a much tighter pay scale, matched with the sonics of military cartoons. Swank artwork by Brian Chippendale.

YUUKI MATTHEWS-Library Catalog Music Series: Music for Savage Tropical Imagery LP (Asthmatic Kitty-$11.99)
Originally from Hollywood (Burbank), California, Yuuki moved to the Northwest with his mother and brother in the mid-nineties. With this record, Yuuki sought to expand upon the nostalgia of subtle sound degradation.
MUM-Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know 2xLP (Euphono-$16.99)
Two years (almost to the day) after their previous release, Iceland's eccentric pop maestros mum have returned with their fifth studio album, Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know. Sing Along... recalls sand running through fingers or ripples on a lake; it's an ode to the light in its different shapes, from a fading bulb to the blinding sun. Alternately sunny and melancholy, Sing Along... flows like the tides: now ebullient, now brooding, cacophony resolving into tight melody.

LINDA PERHACS-Parallelograms LP (Guerssen-$23.99)
Back in stock on more affordable single-disc format. "Linda's sole album, originally released on Kapp in 1970, has gained its deserved fame and reputation in the folk-psych scene in the last years after the NY label Wild Places released it on CD format some few years ago. We could talk about Joni Mitchell and the likes if we had to compare with anything, but fans of folk music in all its variety must be delighted with this amazing album, a truly hippie psychedelic folk masterpiece and without any doubt one of the top albums of the genre. This beauty was reissued on vinyl a few years ago in Korea as well, in a 500 pieces limited pressing that sold out instantly...and we believe this one MUST be available unlimited so here we come with a gorgeous, tremendous sounding reissue of the legendary album plus 2 bonus tracks (exactly like the Korean release), a poster and an insert."
VERNON CHATMAN-Final Flesh DVD (Drag City-$15.99)
Comes with a special secret bonus!! "NEW from Vernon Chatman, a co-creator of some of this millennium's most outre cable television programming (Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel and -- yeah -- Doggy Fizzle Televizzle - !) is a DVD destined to change the way we look at entertainment, pornography and probably the legal system. Final Flesh is a feature film produced in four parts: the script written by Vernon was divided up and submitted to four unique film production companies that work exclusively in the field of customized adult content. The companies' shared charter is to produce a film that explores the writer's chosen fetish -- and with this in mind, Vernon wrote with demented determination, in order to push the definition of fetish into the realm of the cosmically absurd. Then he sat back to see what his charges would deliver. The resulting film is an epic narrative for our time. Final Flesh is a surreal, apocalyptic My Dinner With Andre -- in other words, existenti
al, sublime and ridiculous, featuring unmistakeably porno production values and shudderingly unseasoned porno actors and actresses -- but no actual sex! Chatman's sexworker hirelings applied themselves earnestly to his cerebral text (never suspecting the prank nature of the project). Working in complete isolation from each other, they made Final Flesh a cinematic 'exquisite corpse' whose fervid rottings comprise an insurgency in the field of...well, all the fields that involve people looking at other people for entertainment. Final Flesh isn't just a meta-comedic concept whose time has come -- it 's also a hot evening's entertainment filled with religion, sex, philosophy, fashion, culture and 'reality' (with all the pathos that implies), plus some really amazing dialogue. Few will sit the fence on this. Few should. Final Flesh is a confrontation and a contradiction that deserves its day in (kangaroo) court. Fortunately, it 's the way of the world that the curious and easily influenced will be drawn into the web that is Final Flesh, whether they like it or not -- thus dissolving its concepts of 'avant-garde porn' and 'comedy' into the unsuspecting mainstream, where their questionable merits will have the desired evolutionary impact. If your spirit is willing -- the Flesh will freak you!" Running time: 71 min.; NTSC all-region format.

And a lot more re-stocks on the website, plus some handfuls of used goodies are always being added!
