Howdy, folks.

I know, you are like "...whaaaaat?? Tonevendor still exists??" - well, of course we do! Things have just been so crazy for the last year, that we haven't had time to keep up with the weekly updates. But those of you who are astute, loyal customers will know that our website is kept fresh with new arrivals all the time, so visiting that has been your best bet for instant satisfaction. That said, we have lots of exciting news to share:

1) Tonevendor is opening another retail shop! Last time we had a retail store was from 2003-2005 in Sacramento, CA. Now, we are opening up on the other coast -- the store will be located at 81D King Street in beautiful, downtown historic St. Augustine, Florida - the nation's oldest city. Opening weekend will be Memorial Day weekend, and we are truly excited. We hope you will have a chance to come visit us in person!

2) We have regained control of our mysterious Facebook page. If you are not connected to us on Facebook, you will soon be missing out on lots of good updates and news! We haven't been using it too much yet, but that will all change once the shop opens, as we will undoubtedly be posting regular daily or semi-daily updates on stock inventory, shop happenings, contests, news, and more. Please click the ol' "like" button at our Facebook page. Need a link? There it is at the bottom, but are all those numbers at the end really necessary? Apparently so. If it don't work for you, you know how to search, right? Good.

3) We'd like your feedback on this email update list. I plan to scale it back to keep things simple - a once-weekly update with a simple list of new and restock items for that week. No lengthy descriptions, no bells, no whistles - just a basic text list to browse. Do you think this is good or bad? Would you prefer to see cover images? Links to click to immediately add items to your cart? Do you need those product descriptions? Let us know.

4) Records! Lots of 'em. But what about CDs, you say? Well, we get those too, occasionally, but to be honest, it's just tough to tell how many - if any - CDs we will sell anymore. That said, if you are one of those who prefer the CD format, and have been disappointed by our shift to vinyl, please give us some feedback too. We ALWAYS do special orders, and preorders as well. If there's something coming up that you want us to get for you, the best way is to let us know! Then we can get it for you fairly quickly, you can buy from us, and we will all be very happy.

I guess that's about it. I hope you are as excited as we are that things will be back in full gear again very soon. Thanks for being there for us, and with us.

BURNING HEARTS-Extinctions CD (Shelflife-$11.99)
Finnish indie pop stalwarts Jessika Rapo (vocalist for Le Futur Pompiste) & Henry Ojala (ex-drummer for Cats On Fire) teamed up to form Burning Hearts in 2006. In fall 2011, Johan Ekstroem & Niko Kivikangas joined the band as the live line-up was renewed. Their 2nd full-length album, "Extinctions", was written as a consequence of many tragical stories that in a way or another touched the band. Quite a few of the songs are dedicated to persons or creatures that no longer exist. Even if human tragedies inpired the writing & death is present in nearly all the songs, the sound remains vivid and full of hope.

DISAPPEARS-Pre-Language CD (Kranky-$12.99)
With Steve Shelley (SONIC YOUTH) now fully integrated into the line up, Disappears return with a full-bore assault of a new record. "Pre Language" finds the band speaking on, of all things, love. Direct allusions to Philip K. Dick, James Baldwin, & Joan of Arc sit side by side with songs about the lows of life & the characters that permeate it. Recorded in Hoboken, NJ at Sonic Youth's Echo Canyon West studio & mixed with John Congleton, "Pre Language" finds Disappears at their most potent and focused. The band has finally stepped into their own world & the results are thrilling.

DROWNER-s/t CD (Saint Marie-$12.99)
Drowner is a band from Houston, Texas whose big, oceanic, atmospheric sound draws on influences as varied as shoegaze, post rock, noise pop and dream pop as well as bands like The Cure, R.E.M., My Bloody Valentine and Mogwai. Drowner is Darren Emanuel on guitar/drums/keys, Sean Evans on guitar, Mike Brewer on bass and Anna Bouchard on vocals.
Drowner began as a side project of Darren Emanuel (Swimming In, Apples to Earth). Darren's increasing use of the guitar in both of his previous bands led him to an interest in the sounds of a resurgent shoegaze scene and some of the post rock music happening both in Texas and elsewhere. In 2008, he started writing demo tracks to test some new guitar sounds. The early tracks had a soaring, oceanic feel with strong melodies and heavy use of the Roland Space Echo, drenched in fuzzed-out reverb.
In 2010, Darren worked with a few different singers on the project before finding the perfect counterpoint in longtime friend Anna Bouchard. After some discussion of the project, Anna and Darren began writing in their respective studios and sending demos and tracks back and forth via the internet. Anna brings not only beautiful vocals to Drowner, but a deep lyricism. In late summer 2011, Sean and Mike joined the band. In instrumental work and vocals, music and lyrics, Drowner attempts to embody the power of music to overwhelm and transcend.

ELIKA-Always the Light CD (Saint Marie-$12.99)
Where ominous, fuzzed-out textures and energetic, geometric electronics meet, you'll find Brooklyn's Elika. The power duo of multimedia artists Evagelia Maravelias and Brian Wenckebach have quietly recorded and released a torrent of adventurous music since 2006, earning recognition the old fashioned way. It paid off. Elika have toured internationally, and were recently handpicked to support shoegazers Asobi Seksu and revered dream-electro musician and producer Ulrich Schnauss, who went on to describe Elika as "an incredibly exciting, radical fusion of shoegaze and electronica elements."
Their previous effort saw XLR8R raving "every musical note seems as carefully placed as a comma in a novel, and Maravelias' voice soars through a collection of intelligent lyrics centered on lost love." Elika's latest, Always the Light, offers the group's clearest musical vision yet: Finding a path through [Love] + [Tragedy] + [Defeat].
Always the Light places catastrophic personal events into an ocean of complex programmed rhythms a la Lali Puna and M83, with an emphasis on honey-coatedvocals and washes of distant, dreamy synths and guitars. Nowhere is this more evident than on album lead-off, the instantly hummable "Stay Beside Me," and the Curve-incarnate anthem "No One Gets Lost." Providing extra dimension to Always the Light, Elika explores more cavernous, ambient IDM-informed concepts on "Never Touch the Sky," "Waiting Room," and "All My Wishes." The many facets of Elika combine in top form with "We Had It All" – soaring choruses, a celestial crescendo, and visceral electrogaze vibes done right.

MEDICINE-Time Baby II 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
"Time Baby 2" is simultaneously one of the most widely heard Medicine songs (It's the tune they're "playing" in their appearance in the 1994 film, "The Crow") and also one of the most difficult to find a copy of. Originally released in the U.K. only as one of three non-LP B sides on the 1993 Creation Records "5ive" E.P., it has never been released anywhere else until now. It's also worth mentioning that the original Creation release suffered from poor, out of phase mastering, so this song's appearance here (as well as its inclusion along with all of the other non-LP B-Sides on the upcoming expanded re-issues of the first two Medicine albums) marks the first time this noisy pop gem can be heard as the band truly intended. "Miss Drugstore (alternate mix)" is previously unreleased (save for a short snippet on the 1994 "Sounds of Medicine" E.P.) and will be exclusive to this release. This somewhat stripped down experimental self-remix is a rare chance to discover what those who l
isten closely will have already realized long ago: Medicine was a kick-ass rock band with an amazingly powerful rhythm section.

RINGO DEATHSTARR-Shadow 10" (Sonic Unyon / Club AC30-$13.99)
Limited to 1000 copies on swirled pink and purple vinyl! Austin, Texas based Ringo Deathstarr have announced details of the release of a new 4-track EP. The Shadow EP will be released through Sonic Unyon Records. The tracklisting of the EP, features a guest appearance by ....And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead's Jason Reece on the title track and a cover version of Just You from Twin Peaks series 2.
The band released their first album, Colour Trip, in March 2011 and a compilation of their early singles, Sparkler, was released in the autumn of 2011. The last twelve months have seen them play across the globe, including a rapturously received show at this summer's Fuji Rock Festival; for once, a band genuinely 'big in Japan'. The EP comes on the heels of their recent European tour supporting the Smashing Pumpkins in November and December 2011, and their third Japanese tour of the year in late December.

WHIRR-Pipe Dreams CD (Tee Pee-$10.99)
Bay Area post-shoegaze sextet Whirr generates suspenseful songs of soothing, razor sharp guitar textures backed by soft, cooling vocals. On their full length debut Pipe Dreams, the band's supercharged spirit rejuvenates the '90s shoegaze sound, providing a widescreen update for the post-millennial era. Whirr's wall of lush guitars, breathy vocals, dreamy synth and thunderous drumming propel listening ears into a near cinematic realm where instantly catchy melodies and emotional, enveloping atmospheres hang perfectly in the balance. The sound of Whirr is a totalizing crush when texture and volume hit perfect balance and bright pop melodies wander through dark, dense guitar noise. Twenty years after My Bloody Valentine awed music fans with its now-classic Loveless LP, Whirr takes hold of the reins and lets its fluid, immaculate surge of drones and reverberations light the way. The New Psychedelia has arrived!

** LES DISQUES COMPACT **

MAGNETIC FIELDS-Love at the Bottom of the Sea CD (Merge-$13.99)
The Magnetic Fields return to the signature mix of synth and acoustic sounds they established in the 90s with Merge releases such as The Charm of the Highway Strip and Get Lost. Stephin Merritt has come back to synths with a fresh approach: "Most of the synthesizers on the record didn't exist when we were last using synthesizers," he notes. The songs ? none over three minutes long ? were recorded in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York with Merritt's usual cast of collaborators: Claudia Gonson, Sam Davol, John Woo, Shirley Simms, Johny Blood and Daniel Handler.

THE MEGAPHONIC THRIFT-s/t CD (Sonic Unyon / Club AC30-$12.99)
The Megaphonic Thrift return with their second, eponymous album. Entering their rehearsal space in Bergen with only a handful of riffs and a desire to experiment, the tracks that make up the album came about through a process of all members writing towards a unified record, disregarding any template and looking to move on from the marker set down by Decay Decoy. The result is an album that pushes at the edges of their previous noise assault at times but also reveals a softer and more delicate side to their songwriting.

MIRRORING-Foreign Body CD (Kranky-$12.99)
Mirrorring is Jesy Fortino, who has recorded under the Tiny Vipers moniker, and Liz Harris, better know as Grouper. The recordings on this album came about through a songwriting session in Portland, Oregon. The resulting sounds are contemplative, reflective, and introspective, creating a feeling as much as a song, a mood as much as a tune. One could try to assess what part of the album each artist was responsible for, but that would prevent one from seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. Foreign Body was recorded and produced in 2011.

LEE RANALDO-Between the Times and the Tides CD (Matador-$11.99)
Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo puts out his first proper, song-oriented studio album this March. Recorded with longstanding Sonic Youth producer John Agnello, the album is a shimmering and melodic tapestry of rock sounds. Ranaldo's trademark alternate-tuning guitar work is at the forefront, but it is amplified by brilliant leadwork from Wilco's Nels Cline on every track. The all-star lineup also includes Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley on drums, Alan Licht on guitar, and John Medeski on keyboards. There are also cameos from original Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert and Jim O'Rourke.

SPIRACLES-How Things Went Well When I Met You CD (Saint Marie-$7.99)
For over a decade, Luis Rodriquez has been writing songs and playing guitar for the shoegaze band Resplandor. During this time he has played with Robin Guthrie, The Radio Dept, Airiel, The Ocean Blue, Mark Gardener (Ride), Mahogany, Elika, House Of Love, Altocamet, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Asobi Seksu and many more. Luis brings all of this experience to the forefront, along with the majestic and enigmatic vocals of Aracelli Fernandez, in The Spiracles.
This first EP includes the beautiful indie-pop single "Fireflies", followed by a mid-tempo "Mercy" and a lovely version of The Field Mice's "End Of The Affair". It also includes a remix by the shoegaze/electronica Brooklyn based band Elika and another by Canu, lead singer/DJ from the Argentina band Altocamet.
The Spiracles have taken great influence from bands such as REM, The Smiths, Robin Guthrie, The Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars and it is evident in this recording. Upon initial listen, you will find yourself singing along with the sure to be college radio hit "Fireflies" long after the song has ended.

THE WEDDING PRESENT-Valentina CD (Scopitones-$12.99)
The Wedding Present's eighth studio album, Valentina, comes four years after 2008's critically acclaimed El Rey. Recorded in the wilds of France, the suburbs of Los Angeles and the lanes of Brighton... it shimmers with near perfection.
The ten track Valentina rumbles in with the crunchy statement track You're Dead vibrating with familiar overdriven guitars and Gedge's words dripping with finality. The first single, You Jane, comes next; a rhythmic rock 'n' roll treat, laden with forlorn wanting... and letting the thing you love go free.
The record was mixed by the legendary Andrew Scheps who adds The Wedding Present to an impressive list of clients such as Adele, Iggy Pop and Johnny Cash. It has been said that Scheps' production adds a live feel to the recording while retaining the power of the band.
Unsurprisingly, there is no filler on this album... each track has its own distinct atmosphere and David Gedge's lyrics explore the same beginning and ending of relationship material, but with his ever-fresh take on the highs and lows of a lovelife.
Back A Bit... Stop, another high point, is The Wedding Present at their pop-guitar best... driven by a delightfully overdriven bass line... and punctuated by what can only be called a drum 'performance'.
At the end of the record, Mystery Date twinkles and lilts... tricking you into thinking that it's going to be a soft story of the very beginnings of love... but then absolutely thunders in with a cacophony of tempo changes and soaring guitars... leaving you gasping for breath as a Japanese voiceover trails on...
The Wedding Present have found the best recording studio, the best mixing engineer and the best set of songs to complete what may very well be their best album to date.

THE BEETS-Let the Poison Out LP (Hardly Art-$11.99)
Over the course of four years, the Beets have become one of the best bands, if not the best band, in New York. With two full-length LPs and three singles on NY label Captured Tracks under their belt, and an amazing live show to boot, it is no wonder why they have been personally asked to share the stage by the likes of Pavement, and to tour with bands from the Vivian Girls to the Mountain Goats. The Beets are the musician's band, the artist's band, the band of bands. The Beets are smart and colorful individuals who treat life as a sing-along and a comic book all at once. The Beets are more than a band: they are a way of life, a gang, a gang from Jackson Heights, a gang that you want to be a part of.
Hardly Art is proud to present to the world Let the Poison Out, the third masterpiece from the Beets. It was recorded in two days, with a few overdubs here and there, at Marlborough Farms by Gary Olsen of Ladybug Transistor. It's the album the Beets have been working up to. Let the Poison Out also marks the addition of Chie Mori, an important component as the latest and last drummer for the Beets. It's true that the Beets have had many drummers. "If this doesn't work out, then no more Beets," asserts Garcia.
While the title references the band's idol and unofficial mascot, Howard Stern, Let the Poison Out is really an album about getting everything out of your system. All of the Beets elements are here: jangly acoustic guitar; simply captured, sing-along lyrics about being yourself, being free, not fitting in; and an undercurrent of restless energy. The Beets love the Ramones. The Beets love MAD magazine. The Beets love Queens and Keds. Now is the time for you to love the Beets.

BLACK KEYS- Attack & Release LP+CD (Nonesuch-$16.99)
Until now, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys took an extreme do-it-yourself approach to record making, hunkering down in a basement studio or setting up equipment in one of the abandoned factories of their native Akron, Ohio Their modus operandi was more séance than session. With a minimal set of tools, they conjured up a big, swaggering blues-rock sound, seemingly drawn from some distant time and place yet too weirdly original to ever be called retro
For this album, however, the Black Keys decided not to go it alone; Attack and Release is the result of one of the most audacious, and eagerly awaited collaborations in alternative rock history. As producer, Auerbach and Carney chose Danger Mouse, the mega-eclectic sonic mastermind behind the Grammy Award winning Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere and its multi-format hit, "Crazy," as well as the music industry provocateur who created the mother of all mash-ups, The Grey Album. The Black Keys also deigned to work at an established studio, albeit one within driving distance of Akron. Suma Recording, a legendary spot in northeast Ohio renowned for its supply of great vintage gear, provided just the right ambiance fort he guys .As Carney put it, with genuine affection, Suma "smells like a moldy cabin and looks like a haunted house."

BLACK KEYS-Brothers 2xLP+CD (Nonesuch-$24.99)
Specs: 2-LP Set. Content includes two 120g regular weight black vinyl discs pressed at Furnace/Pallas, in single pocket Stoughton jacket with expanded spine with poster insert (MPS) and CD in babypak.
The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. With their 2008 Nonesuch release Attack & Release - the fifth album of their eight-year career which doubled the sales of their previous album and Nonesuch debut Magic Potion - guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney illustrated the durability of their few-frills sound, a mysterious and heavy brew of seventies-vintage rock, classic R&B and timeless, downhearted blues. Producer and pal Danger Mouse, their first outside collaborator, didn't try to reinvent their sound but further isolated its essence with the help of a few carefully chosen guest players and some retro-modern electronic gear. It didn't need to get slicker to get better, or, as the Boston Globe put it, "Attack & Release proves that cleaning up the boys still won't stop them from tracking mud all over the house."
Danger Mouse returned to co-produce "Tighten Up" on Brothers, but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up." The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on lead-off track "Everlasting Light" and "The Only One"; "Howlin' For You" opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who's who of New York City MC's, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRoc super-session organized by hip-hop impresario and Black Keys
fan Damon Dash. They've also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo Keep It Hid album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, Feels Good Together. Their maturation didn't happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, "Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we're brothers, and I think these songs reflect that."
Brothers was primarily cut in Muscle Shoals, a setting that turned out to have more in common with the Akron, Ohio factories where the Black Keys used to record. The place was desolate, the town depressed, so once again the duo slipped into a world all its own. They did additional recording at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and The Bunker in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by engineer Tchad Blake, a veteran of sessions with Los Lobos, Pearl Jam and Peter Gabriel. Says Carney, "The way he approaches mixing is the same way we approach making music. Respecting the past while being in the present.."
BLUE WATER WHITE DEATH-s/t LP (Gravefave-$10.99)
Brainchild of Jamie Stewart (XIU XIU) & Jonathan Meiburg (SHEARWATER). Clean, even tones & the nonchalant picking of acoustic guitars that recall life on the open sea, notes & words paced like breaststrokes on the journey to the depths, & jarring, mysterious noises meshed w/ vocals that echo the isolated, garbled qualities of the inside of a diver's mask

BONNIE PRINCE BILLY-Wolfroy Goes to Town LP (Drag City-$16.99)
"Wolfroy Goes To Town was recorded in Kentucky and mixed by Shahzad Ismaily, Emmett Kelly and Will Oldham. In addition to Bonnie Prince Billy, the players on this record are: Ben Boye (keyboards and extra singing), Van Campbell (drums and percussion), Shahzad Ismaily (percussion, guitar, extra singing), Emmett Kelly (guitars, mandolin, harmony singing), Danny Kiely (basses) and Angel Olson (singing). Prior to the recording, the ten songs on Wolfroy Goes To Town were played by the whole band in performance at Chicago's Millennium Park in May of 2011. Some of the songs were played and sung by Bonny, Emmett Kelly and Angel Olson on the Free Florida tour that immediately followed. This is the first time any Bonny album has been previewed in public before it was made in the studio!"
BRIGHT EYES-A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997 3xLP (Saddle Creek-$25.99)
The debut album for Bright Eyes was compiled from 4 reels of analog 4-track recordings which Conor Oberst had made prior to his 18th birthday. Conor spent most all of his teenage years touring and playing music with bands such as Commander Venus and Park Ave. Now, he has focused his efforts on Bright Eyes, the moniker by which he shares his intimate and personal stories. The 20 songs on this album are stated elegantly and humbly with guitars, keyboards, drums, and voice.Oberst's imagery and storytelling is at times quite sad and other times rather uplifting, yet always exhibits the sophisticat
CRASS-Yes Sir I Will LP (Crass-$11.99)
The 5th release in the Crassical Collection reissues. The band then came back to Southern Studios in March 1983 & in one intense, 45 minute recording session, the band's fifth & last studio album "Yes Sir, I Will" was made. The band chose to forgo the formulaic clichés of punk rock & instead adopt the improvisational approach of free jazz, in a bid to replicate the desperation they were all feeling at that time.
KAREN DALTON-1966 LP (Delmore-$18.99)
LP version housed in tip-on jacket, with four page heavy insert, exclusive color portrait and download card. "In 1966, Carl Baron brought his reel to reel over to her remote cabin in Summerville, Colorado and recorded one of those exquisite musical evenings. Karen and Richard Tucker were rehearsing for a gig when Carl hit the record button. The result is a 45-year-old tape, carefully exhumed, documenting Karen at her most raw and unfiltered. On it are Fred Neil and Tim Hardin songs we've never heard Karen give voice to before, as well as traditional songs she uncannily makes her own, including a devastating version of 'Katie Cruel', that is so powerful, it is as if the ghost of Katie Cruel seeped into her blood. This recording is a window to her Summerville cabin opened, allowing us to eavesdrop on Karen Dalton at her most pure and unaffected. Newly unearthed rehearsal tape from 1966. Features Karen solo on banjo and guitar, plus four duets with Richard Tucker. Many never hea
rd before covers including 'Reason To Believe' and 'Don't Make Promises' by Tim Hardin, and 'Other Side To This Life' by Fred Neil. KD at her most intimate and unfiltered. CD booklet contains beautiful, unseen photos (including Karen with Fred Neil and Tim Hardin), and a 3500 word essay by Ben Edmonds (MOJO and currently working on a biography of Tim Hardin)."
DIRTY THREE-Toward the Low Sun LP (Drag City-$16.99)
Dirty Three return seven years since their last album, and Toward the Low Sun is a true humdinger. Warren Ellis is always sawing away at something on the violin that kind of tightens our chest and gives us that ol' thousand-yard stare; Mick Turner wanders with hollow-bodied guitar from abstract and dreamy to punishing hard chord rock in the space of a breath, never sacrificing a sense of the awesome along the path; then there's Jim White. He's doing something that no one else does back there. Plus, he's drumming!
THE DRUMS-Portamento LP (Frenchkiss-$16.99)
Emerging from Brooklyn via Florida in 2009, The Drums initially caught the ear of the indie world with their Summertime! EP. It was an escapist collection of beach pop fantasies; tracks suffused with a wistful, longing nostalgia that never pandered to cheap sentimentality. Their terrific self-titled debut LP, was bifurcated into a first half dedicated to more upbeat pop songs, and a second half revealing a darker, more introspective side of the band. For the often difficult sophomore LP, the band sidestepped the pitfalls of a slump by recording it quickly, again self-producing, often laying down tracks spontaneously in singer Jonny Pierce's kitchen. Following the departure of guitarist Adam Kessler, drummer Connor Hanwick switched to guitar, and guitarist Jacob Graham picked up his more natural instrument of synthesizers. Portamento, the new album, follows their debut by a mere 14 months and reveals a band tugging lightly at the boundaries of their sound while still retaining
their sonic signatures – sweet rushes of melody, winsome lyrics, and brittle synthesizer sheens colliding with wiry Spector-esque guitar and bass lines.

DUTCHESS AND THE DUKE-She's the Dutchess, He's the Duke LP (Hardly Art-$10.99)
Compared to "Between The Buttons"-era Stones, Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, The Dutchess & The Duke's songs mark a turning point for Kimberly Morrison and Jesse Lortz. Each song touts magnetic guitar lines and vocals so straightforward that they belie all other intricacies.
"By taking tonal cues from darker, acid-tinged '60s pop and sweetening it with just the right amount of meticulously constructed harmonies, they are managing to pull off one of the trickier combinations in songwriting - sounding timeless and utterly modern at the same time" - Seattle Weekly.

DUTCHESS AND THE DUKE-Sunset / Sunrise LP (Hardly Art-$11.99)
The Dutchess and the Duke's sophomore record, Sunset/Sunrise, is a slump-dodging opus that takes the dark, draw beauty of the band's debut and scales it up to distinctly luminescent heights, thanks to a graceful synthesis of painfully earned creative maturity and thoughtful production under Ashley's adroitly tuned ears.
Though minor chords and romantically morose lyrical yarns about misplaced affections and spiritual inertia remain touchstones, there's a refreshing undercurrent of optimistic light running through the songs like "The River" and "New Shadow," a bewildered and beautiful reflection on Lortz's impending parenthood. The presence of Lortz's innate grasp of classic '60s pop structures is still audible, but so is growth beyond an obvious affection for early Rolling Stones, with songs like "Let It Die" pulsing with a sly warmth and subtle twang all their won.
FUN-Some NIghts 180g LP+CD (Fueled by Ramen-$22.99)
Having earned widespread acclaim with their 2009 debut album, "AIM AND IGNITE," fun. decided to raise the stakes with this album, their first on Fueled By Ramen, by teaming with noted producer Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Drake).
The first single from "SOME NIGHTS," "We Are Young (Feat. Janelle Monáe)," is available now via all digital retailers. The single has generated quite a buzz, hitting the top 3 on The Hype Machine music blog aggregator in its first week of release, not to mention the top 5 on iTunes' "Top Alternative Songs" sales ranking. What's more, "We Are Young" has received major airplay from KCRW's influential Morning Becomes Eclectic, while USA Today applauded the "baroque indie-popsters" for "(making) a counterintuitive play for the big time, slowing down for the massive singalong chorus."
BRUCE HAACK & MS. NELSON-Electronic Music Record for Children LP (Misissippi-$14.99)
Recorded in '69. Early electronic music pioneer Bruce Haack & child educator Ms. Nelson go bravely & deeply into psychedelic music compositions designed to open the minds & hearts of the kiddies. Songs subjects range from ancient folk tales to outerspace, to alternate universes & what the world sounds like if you listen w/ your "inner self"

JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION-Extra Width LP (Shove-$17.99)
"On their self-titled debut album, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion had worked out the basic framework of their sound -- lots of guitar clatter, booming drums, and wild vocal gesticulations from Spencer -- but it took a while for the pieces to really come together, and 1993's Extra Width was the first album where they revealed their true potential. The opening tune, "Afro," provides the key -- Spencer and Judah Bauer's guitars lock in with a sharp call and response, drummer Russell Simins pounds the kit with the force of a punk rocker but the groove of a soul man, and the organ that chimes in with the band slyly pays homage to any number of classic funk sides while adding a good, greasy undertow to the sound. The Blues Explosion were never any kind of blues band (as they freely admitted when anyone bothered to ask), but on Extra Width they copped to the fact they'd learned a lot from classic R&B of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, and after spending the better part of a year on the
road, their studying and hard work paid off. Not everything on Extra Width comes together with the precise chaos of "Afro," but practically every track feels like a better song and a stronger performance than anything on the debut album, and the layers of vocal reverb, keyboard patches, and dubwise studio effects showed that JSBX had learned a lot about the possibilities of the studio since the bare-bones sessions that produced their earliest recordings. If The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion sounded like the work of a band that was a natural evolution from what Spencer was doing with Pussy Galore, Extra Width made it clear they were something quite a bit different -- still crazed and noisy, but with lots more soul, some butt-shaking tunes, and a sense of fun thoroughly absent from the earlier group." – All Music

JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION-Orange LP (Shove-$17.99)
In the aftermath of Extra Width's success, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion were drawing large crowds virtually everywhere they played. It both gratified them and made them suspicious. The track "Afro" on the previous album provided a clue as to the forthcoming no man's land JBSE would raucously explore. Orange is almost entirely new sonic terrain -- but it keeps the trio's trademark sweaty, musical terrorism and hedonistic rage up front. "Bellbottoms" kicks it off with a distorted two-chord guitar vamp, juxtaposed against strings worthy of the Love Unlimited Orchestra in full dramatic swell. Drummer Russell Simins meets Spencer and Judah Bauer's guitars with cracking snares and breaking beats, rolling them out like staccato machine-gun fire yet perfectly on the one. The sound feels like electricity actively coursing through the spine. Funk, hypnotic thrashing white-boy blues, and punk fistfight one another for dominance in a careening frenetic dance number that shakes the ver
y foundations of rock & roll while defining its spirit. This is the liftoff point through the bravado of James Brown, the self-destructive gospelized pill-fueled hellish visions of Jerry Lee Lewis, the sheer exaggerated funk of blaxploitation soundtracks, and Saturday-night knife-fight juke-joint blues. "Ditch" melds the burn-it-down boogie of R.L. Burnside, the sloppy vibe of Exile-era Rolling Stones, the Cramps' demonic swagger, the rhythmic attack of the Meters, and the overdriven volume of the Stooges live. "Blues X Man" marries 12-bar back-country roadhouse blues and back-alley back-seat eros to Lower East Side boasting about the Blues Explosion's musical virility. It begins sparse and skeletal before adding a female backing chorus and DJ turntablism, turning traditionalism upside down and scraping country and city down to their nubs in order to make everything bleed. "Greyhound," the set's final track, rocks hip-hop drums and '70s rock guitars on stun that riff hypnotically and knottily; two-note vamps substitute for solos before the entire thing morphs into pure breakbeat cacophony and smears turntable scratches across the mix as it crashes out the door. Orange is the most commercially successful set JBSE ever turned in, but that's beside the point. In the 21st century, it sounds every bit as messed up, necessary, and frenzied as it did in 1993. – All Music
NIRVANA-Nevermind 180g LP (Original Recordings Group-$22.99)
This reissue from Original Recordings Group is on 180g vinyl and remastered from the original analog recordings. Nevermind was never meant to change the world, but you can never predict when the zeitgeist will hit, and Nirvana's 1991 album turned out to be the place where alternative rock crashed into the mainstream. Kurt Cobain's personal problems and subsequent suicide naturally deepen the dark undercurrents, but no matter how much anguish there is on Nevermind, it's bracing because Kurt Cobain exorcises his demons through evocative wordplay and mangled screams - and because the band has a tremendous, unbridled power that transcends the pain, turning it into pure catharsis. And that's as key to the record's success as Cobain's songwriting, since Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl help turn this into music that is gripping, powerful, and even fun (and, really, there's no other way to characterize "Territorial Pissings" or the surging "Breed"). - All Music Guide

NIRVANA-In Utero 180g LP (Original Recordings Group-$22.99)
Beautifully packaged and pressed on deluxe 180g black vinyl, this classic album is finally back in print on vinyl! Nirvana probably hired Steve Albini to produce In Utero with the hopes of creating their own Surfer Rosa, or at least shoring up their indie cred after becoming a pop phenomenon with a glossy punk record. In Utero, of course, turned out to be their last record, and it's hard not to hear it as Kurt Cobain's suicide note, since Albini's stark, uncompromising sound provides the perfect setting for Cobain's bleak, even nihilistic, lyrics. Even if the album wasn't a literal suicide note, it was certainly a conscious attempt to shed their audience - an attempt that worked, by the way, since the record had lost its momentum when Cobain died in the spring of 1994. Even though the band tempered some of Albini's extreme tactics in a remix, the record remains a deliberately alienating experience, front-loaded with many of its strongest songs, then descending into a series o
f brief, dissonant squalls before concluding with "All Apologies," which only gets sadder with each passing year. Throughout it all, Cobain's songwriting is typically haunting, and its best moments rank among his finest work, but the over-amped dynamicism of the recording seems like a way to camouflage his dispiritedness - as does the fact that he consigned such great songs as "Verse Chorus Verse" and "I Hate Myself and Want to Die" to compilations, when they would have fit, even illuminated the themes of In Utero. Even without those songs, In Utero remains a shattering listen, whether it's viewed as Cobain's farewell letter or self-styled audience alienation. Few other records are as willfully difficult as this. - All Music Guide
NIRVANA-Incesticide 180g LP (Original Recordings Group-$26.99)
Re-compiled and re-mastered from the original tape and recording sources by Bernie Grundmand at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios, Hollywood; pressed on 180 gram vinyl at RTI. 'Buying time and thwarting bootleggers, Nirvana and DGC released the rarities compilation Incesticide toward the end of 1992. Like any odds 'n' sods collection, this is uneven, but that's its charm since it captures Nirvana's character better than any official album. After all, this was a band that was born equally from '70s sludge metal, bubblegum pop, post-punk artiness, and indie rock inclusiveness, each of which are apparent on this collection . . . Nirvana meant everything to everyone, from the jangle pop veterans to the garage rock ravers that worshipped the Stooges to stoner metal fetishes and indie rock bed-sits that adopted Sebadoh just as they outgrew Morrissey - everybody loved Nirvana, and there's something for every kind fan here, thanks to murky sludge, Devo and Vaselines covers, BBC sessi
ons, instrumentals, and limited-edition singles, plus sub-Melvins goop, everything visceral where Bleach was tame. Nevermind doesn't capture this freewheeling indie spirit but Incesticide does, piling on some essentials in the meantime - the pummeling "Dive," the childhood snapshot "Sliver," the terrific forgotten indie pop tune "Been a Son," and "Aneurysm," perhaps the greatest single song the group ever recorded.' - Stephen Thomas Erlewine / All Music Guide
JIM O'ROURKE-Halfway to a Three Way 12" (Drag City-$11.99)
2012 repress, originally released 1999. "Well, never mind--as long as people love it, here's another few sides of long-ago and far-away O'Rourke back on vinyl for the first time since way back in the mid-aughties. It's the Halfway to a Threeway 12" EP back to set turntables a-spinnin'! Fans of Eureka and Insignificance (not to mention Jim's tomfoolery as part of the Loose Fur band) will appreciate the analog pressing of these four slices of the pop music party-pooper combination of folk, classic rock, smooth jazz and a bit of the old avant-garde to help communicate the twisted ways of the misanthrope that made Jim such a perennial in the fickle world of record sales. A quick listen to the title track will hip you to our meaning: Halfway to a Threeway exposes our sweet soul-crusher as a lustful man-beast on the make. The song is a straight folk number--straight, that is, until you listen through the haze of those six-string overtones and chirpy harmony vocals to hear the true
perversity of O'Rourke's fantasies. The decadence of stardom seems to have turned Jim into not only a sex freak, but also a man who loves women of all persuasions--particular the crippled and brain-dead kind! Don't listen to this song alone--at least, not with the drapes open."
PALE SAINTS-Comforts of Madness LP (Original Recordings Group-$22.99)
Remastered for vinyl for the first time in over two decades, this record is pressed on high quality, European vinyl. This is the first ever U.S. release of The Comforts of Madness on vinyl, the way it was meant to be heard. The Comforts of Madness, the band's debut studio album, was released in 1990. It proved to be their most successful and critically acclaimed record, reaching the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart. An ambitious sound that remains unique right to this day, Ian Masters and the crew successfully merged dream pop with rather gentle shoegaze. The album includes a cover of Opal's, "Fell From the Sun," and was produced by John Fryer and Gil Norton.
Following on the heels of releases on Woodsist, Mexican Summer and True Panther, the stage is set for their wonderfully clement new album coming in the autumn.
SBTRKT-s/t LP (Young Turks-$13.99)
While he has had multiple releases in single and EP forms, this is SBTRKT's first full-length, and about that he says, "This release is the culmination of a longer period of constant writing and collaboration, tracks on previous EPs were written as singular pieces. This record is much more of a whole project, more representative of my thoughts and ideas as an artist and each track was completed with the aim to be coherent together."
SONIC YOUTH-Bad Moon Rising 180g LP (Original Recordings Group-$26.99)
An album quite unlike any other in the colorful Sonic Youth canon, Bad Moon Rising captures the New York band in 1985 during its most morose phase, one that is quite forbidding yet fascinating all the same. The proper album is an eight-song tapestry of droning guitar feedback, distant clattering percussion, and dreamy vocal mumblings, all of it woven together by sullen interludes of ambient noise. It's a piercing capstone to an otherwise hazy album and is no doubt one of the highlights of Sonic Youth's overall output.

SONIC YOUTH-Confusion is Sex COLOR 180g LP (Original Recordings Group-$22.99)
Confusion Is Sex, the debut album from Sonic Youth, was originally released in 1983 on Glenn Branca's label Neutral Records. In 1995, it was reissued on CD from DGC Records, with the extra tracks from the Kill Your Idols EP.
Confusion Is Sex remains one of the most important and influential records to emerge from the American No Wave, post-punk scene which thrived through the late 1970s and early 1980s in the lower east side of New York, with bands like The Contortions, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Mars and DNA. Lee Renaldo and Thurston Mooreutilized various experimental techniqueswhile playing and recording this album. Notably and most interestingly perhaps are the "third bridge" techniques which evolved from theirt ime working with Branca and his prepared guitars-Thurston and Leebuilt a third bridge by sticking screwdrivers between the strings and fretboards of their guitars.

SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE-Diary 2xLP (Sub Pop-$15.99)
This remastered edition of Sunny Day Real Estate's defining debut album, Diary, includes rare bonus tracks as well as newly written liner notes. Originally formed in Seattle in 1992, Sunny Day Real Estate featured Nate Mendel (bass), William Goldsmith (drums), Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals) and Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar)."...Diary, virtually defined emo in the '90s, laying much of the groundwork (along with Weezer) for the genre's end-of-decade indie prominence. Although emo existed (both as a term and as a style) prior to Diary, it hadn't yet risen out of the deepest hardcore punk underground, save for a few bands on the Dischord label. For all intents and purposes, Diary was the album that made emo accessible, fusing its gnarled guitars and nakedly emotional vocals with more than a hint of melodic Seattle grunge. Diary still ranks as arguably the definitive '90s emo album, and an indispensable introduction to the genre." - All Music Guide
TANLINES-Mixed Emotions LP (True Panther Sounds-$13.99)
Mixed Emotions is the debut album from Brooklyn's Tanlines, the duo of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass). Initially a production project, Tanlines have evolved through two acclaimed EPs into a deeply personal, electronic pop group. The album was recorded in a series of locations after the band were evicted from their own studio, which in turn pushed Emm to focus on his lyrics and songwriting. In the process, he discovered a beautiful baritone vocal style. The lyrics poured out of him, and their maturity and honesty form the core of Mixed Emotions.
TEENAGE FANCLUB-Bandwagonesque LP (Original Recordings Group-$22.99)
This twentieth anniversary edition of Bandwagonesque is on 140 gram vinyl, pressed at Record Industry in Holland. Released for the first time in the US and re-mastered for the first time in over a decade, ORG Music is proud to present another album that helped inspire a revolution in music. Includes a faithful recreation of the original jacket and lyric sheet. 'The gold standard of the early '90s power pop revival, in its own way Bandwagoneque was as much a benchmark as contemporary records like Nevermind and Loveless; though not the generational rallying cry of the former nor the revolutionary sonic breakthrough of the latter, Teenage Fanclub's sophomore album nevertheless heralded the return of melody and craft, coupled with energy and spirit - hallmarks of much of the greatest rock & roll of the past, and virtues as rare as hen's teeth in the years immediately prior to the disc's release. Although its incandescent harmonies, lazily immediate songs, and crunching guitars ea
rned it endless comparisons to vintage Big Star, Bandwagoneque is in every way a product of its own time - the thick, grungy sound of the Fannies' debut A Catholic Education remains intact for gems like "What You Do to Me" (arguably the most brilliantly simpleminded love song ever penned) and the instrumental "Satan," while the lyrics of other standout moments like "Star Sign" and "Alcoholiday" reflect a laissez faire irony and unassuming genius even more emblematic of the moment in question.' - Jason Ankeny / All Music Guide
RUFUS WAINWRIGHT-s/t 2xLP (Plain-$23.99)
"Showered with critical praise upon its 1998 release, Rufus Wainwright's debut album established him as the massive talent that he remains today. The child of acclaimed folk songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus' style owes more to the orchestral pop of Scott Walker or Van Dyke Parks (whose orchestral arrangements adorn much of this album), the opera, and the work of Edith Piaf and Judy Garland, than it does his own musical lineage. The debut pop classic from one of this generation's most important artists. Available on vinyl for the very first time." Gatefold sleeve.

TOM WAITS-Bad as Me LP (Anti-$19.99)
Throughout his career, Tom Waits has created milestone albums that serve both to refine the music that has come before, and to signal a new phase in his career: Rain Dogs and Mule Variations are both counted by fans as among these pivotal works. Now comes Bad As Me, his first studio album of all new music in seven years, which finds Tom Waits in possibly the finest voice of his career and at the height of his songwriting powers, working with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime cowriter/ producer Kathleen Brennan. From the opening horn-fueled chug of "Chicago," to the closing barroom chorale of "New Year's Eve," Bad As Me displays the full career range of Waits' songwriting, from beautiful ballads like "Last Leaf," to the avant cinematic soundscape of "Hell Broke Luce," a battlefront dispatch. On tracks like "Talking at the Same Time," Waits shows off a supple falsetto, while on blues burners like "Raised Right Men" and the gospel tinged "Satisfied" he spits, stutt
ers and howls. Like a good boxer, these songs are lean and mean, with strong hooks and tight running times. And there is a pervasive sense of players delighting in each other's musical company that brings a feeling of loose joy even to the album's saddest songs. Bad As Me is a Tom Waits album for the ages.
See CD description above!

THE XX-s/t LP (XL-$13.99)
The xx arrive with their debut album xx - a whole new sound of love, loss and longing. Gingerly dodging the storm cloud of hype hysteria that plagues seemingly every other new buzz act of the moment, Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, Baria Qureshi and Jamie Smith are edging into our hearts. Their unique make-up is an inadvertent second nature marriage of 2009's urban/guitar tribes, in one corner fluttering new wave indebted reverberation, in the other, plumes of post-dubstep sub-bass and figuratively, their defining core of rich R&B vocal textures. If it all reads on paper like some potentially post-modern hotchpotch, then this makes their timeless results all the more alluring. The enveloping vocal partnership of Romy and Oliver is one that would've dropped-jaws in any decade this century, and set amidst a shivering soundscape of beats and plucks, their bedroom-reared concrete-soul is being justly heralded as the UK's most original and treasured alt-pop artifact of late.
In an effort not to draw too much distance from the DIY aesthetic of their early demos, which were recorded in their bedrooms, they recorded their debut album xx under no one's watch, other than engineer Rodaidh McDonald, at XL Recordings' west London in-house studio. The result a wash of sexy, coy, cold and sad rhythms and melodies the likes of Robert Smith, Massive Attack and The Streets.
HUNX-Hairdressers Blues CD (Hardly Art-$10.99)
Hunx (aka Seth Bogart) of Hunx & His Punx/Gravy Train fame is back with a solo album to maximize and flex his power as a stand alone singer/songwriter and pop song virtuoso. Hairdresser Blues is a collection of songs raging from indie pop jingle jangle to bouncing bubble glam and then some. Not only were all of the songs penned by Hunx himself, but the entire album with the exception of the drums, were played by the outrageous frontman. Recorded and produced by Ivan Julian (that famous dude from the Voidoids that produced the Hunx & His Punx lp from 2011 Too Young To Fall In Love).

MEMORYHOUSE-Slideshow Effect CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
The Slideshow Effect, Memoryhouse's full-length follow up to 2011's The Years EP, finds the band heading toward a new clarity in composition and sound; a more organic direction for artists who are, in their own words, transitioning from a "bedroom recording project" into a fully realized band. They half-seriously refer to their new sound as "Taylor Swift with Built to Spill as her backing band." However The Slideshow Effect might be described, we at Sub Pop truly love it. The album was produced by Abeele, with assistance from friend, collaborator, and bassist Barzin Hassani Rad.

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS-Onwards to the Wall CD (Dead Oceans-$8.99)
Onwards to the Wall packs every bit of the searing sonic maelstrom listeners have come to expect (nay, demand!) from Brooklyn's A Place To Bury Strangers. Yet, the adroit songcraft that's always been there is brought more the fore, pop hooks are repurposed and more instantly recognizable. Now joined by bassist Dion Lunadon, formerly of The D4, Ackerman has found a crucial companion in pulling timeless melodies from their jet engine textures.

PORCELAIN RAFT-Strange Weekend CD (Secretly Canadian-$11.99)
Strange Weekend is Porcelain Raft's debut record, yet in many ways it's his 156th. Somewhere in New York, Rome, or maybe London, there is a suitcase full of tapes, minidiscs and CDs - days and days worth of music, all of it the result of Mauro Remiddi's 27 years of travels across Europe – from his native Italy to London; of caravanning with the Berlin Youth Circus playing traditional gypsy Klezmer music; of reinterpreting traditional music in North Korea; and of a stint playing piano for an Off Broadway tap dance show. At this point Remiddi has lived three musicians' lifetimes.
Amazingly, Strange Weekend - with deep roots in so many times and places – is an album that beautifully captures the fleeting right now. Remiddi's interest in movement – about capturing a momentary now en route to the next – is apparent; postcards and polaroids of buildings and faces from the street flicker past. The project's genesis lies in this visual imagery. Over the past year, Remiddi has compiled a catalogue of images – gathered from the various nooks and crannies of the internet – that have served as notes, inspiration, context, and a map for Porcelain Raft's music.

APPLES IN STEREO-Fun Trick Noisemaker 180g LP (Yep Rock-$18.99)
Fun Trick Noisemaker was the first full-length installment in the ongoing musical journey that has grown out of frontman Robert Schneider's infatuation with recording techniques; ranging from four-track bedroom recordings to 100-track studio experiments, to creating new musical scales and mind-controlled synthesizers. Not to mention his ongoing obsession with writing the perfect pop song, a song "that even little kids or your grandparents can sing along with," as Schneider put it at the time. That creative journey continues until this day. But more than just a starting point, Fun Trick Noisemaker stands on its own today as a masterpiece in the indie rock canon, featuring some of the band's most loved and indelible tracks such as: "Green Machine"; "Glow Worm" and "Tidal Wave" (featuring one of the most rip roaring lead guitar lines ever put to wax.)

Yep Roc Records is proud to offer fans the reissue Fun Trick Noisemaker on 180 gram vinyl. These magical tunes seem somehow destined to spin on vinyl, not only as a nod towards the classic artists who inspired their creation, but because even in 1995 The Apples in stereo considered vinyl to be the official medium of release. This special reissue incorporates all of the original artwork and liner notes, with rephotographed paintings by Steve Keene, including a four-color poster insert.

ARCHERS OF LOAF-Vee Vee 180g LP (Merge-$17.99)
The first full-length produced by Bob Weston, Vee Vee was aslight departure from the bombastic noisepop that characterized Archers of Loaf's previous work, and the album's success proved that the band wasn't just a flash in the pan. The album became their best-selling album to date and landed them on the covers of national publications and at the top of college radio charts across the country. "Harnessed in Slums" and "Greatest of All Time" became anthems of the underground and led to successful tours with the Flaming Lips and Weezer and international tours of Europe and Australia.

ANNE BRIGGS-s/t 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"The first full-length album from the legendary folk singer, originally released in 1971. Anne Briggs was a huge influence on the entire British folk-rock movement, especially other female singers such as Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShee, and Maddy Prior. This album is a strong collection of traditional folk songs and original material and one of the most important releases of the British folk revival. Despite the fact that Briggs had been on the folk scene since the early '60s this was her first full-length effort, delayed by erratic behavior and studio fears, and she would record only two more records before dropping off the scene entirely. Thankfully we have this, her first and strongest record, reissued with the original artwork."

ANNE BRIGGS-The Time Has Come 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"One of the most important figures of the British folk revival of the 1960s, Anne Briggs was a huge influence on such luminaries as Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Linda Thompson. This is her second full-length, originally released in 1971. Unlike previous releases which contained mostly traditional songs with little or no accompaniment, this album features many self-penned numbers as well as a few contemporary covers with Briggs playing guitar and bouzouki. Briggs only released two albums and a handful of singles/EPs before retiring from the music business, making this reissue an important document of the British folk revival."

DE LA SOUL-De La Soul is Dead 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"De La Soul's second album, originally released in 1991, was initially received poorly by the press and their fans due to its immediate rejection of the 'daisy-age' image created by their debut LP. In the years since, however, it has come to be accepted as a stone classic that may even surpass the feel-good jams of Three Feet High And Rising with its expansive scope and more diverse subject matter (drug addiction, incest, poseurs, in addition to the more expected, light-hearted material). Prince Paul's production is, again, nothing short of brilliant and Plug's 1, 2 and 3 bring the flow that has made them, rightfully, hip-hop legends."

DURUTTI COLUMN-LC 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"The second Durutti Column album, originally released on Factory Records in 1981, marked the departure of producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division, Buzzcocks) and the addition of drummer Bruce Mitchell, who would remain a longtime collaborator with chief member, guitarist Vini Reilly. LC is as powerful as the debut, a fantastic collection of guitar excursions that transcend genre. This is also the first album to feature Reilly's speak-sing vocal style on a number of songs (including 'The Missing Boy' a tribute to the recently deceased leader of Joy Division, Ian Curtis). Another stellar album."

FILM SCHOOL-Fission LP (High Speed Soul-$13.99)
Not often do you find a band who has experienced success, yet still has the desire to explore new sonic directions. Film School, a band who released two critically acclaimed albums on Beggars Banquet, felt like mixing things up a bit this time around. Fission is an album of clarity, energy, and change. One of the most notable differences on this album is the more prominent vocal presence of bassist Lorelei Plotczyk. The result is a dynamic mix of songwriting by Bertens, Plotczyk and Ruck, with help from guitarist Dave Dupuis and drummer James Smith.

FIRST AID KIT-The Lion's Roar LP (Wichita-$18.99)
Digital download card included! Swedish sisters First Aid Kit have gone from faraway teenage fans covering Fleet Foxes for fun to recording a Blue Series 7-Inch single of Buffy Sainte- Marie's "Universal Soldier" with Jack White in his Nashville, TN Third Man Studios. Originally signed by The Knife owned label, Rabid Records, Wichita Recordings signed them in 2009 and released their debut LP The Big Black and the Blue in early 2010. Their sophomore album was recorded in spring 2011 in Omaha, NE produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Jenny Lewis, Monsters of Folk). From the dynamic title track onwards, the sophomore album is a rich and stirring affair that expands upon the keen and sophisticated country tinged pop of their critically acclaimed debut. The Lion's Roar is a full band record, the girls' father Benkt takes the bass, Mattias Bergqvist drums, while Mogis and Nate Walcott of Bright Eyes, and a cast of Omaha-based musicians round out the sound. Album closer, 'King of the
World' features The Felice Brothers, just passing through town during the session, and local hero Conor Oberst, who sings the last verse.

FLIPPER-Album - Generic Flipper 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"The first record from San Francisco's legendary Flipper, originally released in 1982. Post-hardcore? Post-punk? Art-rock? Despite being a part of SF's punk scene Flipper were really only punk in spirit, eschewing conventions and making no concessions. Sludgy, distorted, atonal, noise rock jams that sound as urgent and heavy as they must have 25 years ago. A huge influence on bands such as Nirvana (their current lineup includes Krist Novoselic on bass) and The Melvins. Album - Generic Flipper contains the classics 'Sex Bomb,' and 'Life.'" 180 gram vinyl.

SERGE GAINSBOURG & BRIGITTE BARDOT-Bonnie & Clyde 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
180 gram vinyl. "Featuring a couple of duets, some Bardot-sung, Gainsbourg-penned numbers, and a number of Serge-only tunes, this is not, technically, a completely collaborative record. It is, however, one of Gainsbourg's finest releases featuring a wide range of styles from moody, funky French-pop ('Bonnie And Clyde'), to barroom piano jazz ('Bubble Gum'), to Afro-Caribbean rhythms ('Pauvre Lola' and 'Baudelaire'), to the swinging '60s pop he was most known for at the time ('Docteur Jeckyll et Monsieur Hyde'). A classic from these two French heroes (originally released in 1968)."

SERGE GAINSBOURG-Gainsbourg Percussions 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"Serge's sixth full length originally released in 1964 is one of those records that will totally blow you away since this is the first ethno pop album ever. Sure, there's the odd jazzy piece, but this is Afrobeat with a capital A, all percussions and drums and in-your-face female backing singers all topped off by Gainsbourg's smoky and dark vocals: Gainsbourg Percussions was by far Serge's weirdest album up to that point. Recorded with French jazz great Alain Gouraguer, Gainsbourg Percussions include the hits 'New York USA' and 'Couleur Café.' Essential Gainsbourg." On 180 gram vinyl.

JESUS AND MARY CHAIN-Automatic 180g LP (Plain-$16.99)
"1989's Automatic is the third album from this Glasgow alternative rock institution and was engineered by Alan Moulder. At this point in their career, J&MC was essentially a duo -- brothers Jim and William Reid and a drum machine. The dark, twisted pop -- sometimes soaked in feedback, sometimes pounded out with drum-machine backing -- of Automatic contains their most successful single up to that point, 'Head On' (later covered by the Pixies). Pitchfork wrote in 2006: 'Conventional wisdom wrongly calls this the dud. With the band reduced to the brothers only, things go artificial: the drum machine is foregrounded, the bass is played on keyboards, the feedback's on vacation. In that space, the Reids take their biggest shot at doing full-on pop, something that feels like a career peak.'" On 180 gram vinyl, housed in a full-color gatefold sleeve.

JESUS AND MARY CHAIN-Honey's Dead 180g LP (Plain-$16.99)
"Released in 1992, Honey's Dead is the fourth studio album by Scottish brothers Jim and William Reid. The title refers to one of the band's early hits, 'Just Like Honey,' and the complete departure from their earlier musical style. Honey's Dead was recorded and mixed in the band's London studio with famed engineers Alan Moulder and Flood. Alternative radio stations picked up 'Far Gone And Out,' which remains one of the band's most popular singles to date while the album's first single 'Reverence' attracted some controversy for the lyrics 'I want to die just like Jesus Christ,' and 'I want to die just like JFK.'" 180 gram vinyl.

MEMORYHOUSE-Slideshow Effect LP (Sub Pop-$14.99)
See CD description above!

MOUNT EERIE-Distorted Cymbals 7" (K-$6.99)
Phil Elverum, in his many musical incarnations, is a collector of sounds, so his Mount Eerie single "Distorted Cymbals" fits in perfectly with the Dub Narcotic Disco Plate catalogue. Recorded with Calvin Johnson (Selector Dub Narcotics) in the Dub Narcotic studio, this collectable 7" has been called one of Phil's more cogent projects by Calvin, and is a wonderful collaboration between two musical savants.

PASTELS-Up For a Bit With the Pastels 180g LP (Fire-$16.99)
"Combining classic '60s pop with the D.I.Y. ethos of punk, Up For A Bit With The Pastels is the band's mysterious and exciting debut album. Originally released by Glass Records in 1987, this is a hugely influential album and a must have for fans of bands like Belle & Sebastian and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Despite being hailed by the likes of Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth, The Pastels seem to have been condemned to be a band's band forever: as one of their later album tracks says, an 'unfair kind of fame.'" 180 gram vinyl.

PORCELAIN RAFT-Strange Weekend LP (Secretly Canadian-$12.99)
Limited edition on white vinyl. See CD description above.

RADIO BIRDMAN-Radios Appear 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$16.99)
"Originally released in 1977, Radios Appear, is the debut album from one of most important Australian bands of all time. Though they are often lumped in with the punk-rock sound of their contemporaries in London and New York, they actually owe more to the earlier sounds of Detroit, specifically the Stooges and the MC5. Their debut is a scorching piece of snotty rock and roll unparalleled in their country or beyond."

REAL ESTATE-Days LP (Domino-$17.99)
Days is a gorgeous suite of timelessly melodic, achingly melancholy pop songs and a delightfully confident follow up to 2009's exceptionally well received eponymous debut.

SWELL MAPS-A Trip to Marineville LP+7" (Secretly Canadian-$13.99)
Noisy and experimental, Britain's Swell Maps experienced little commercial success during the course of their chaotic career, but in hindsight they stand as one of the pivotal acts of the new wave: not only was the group an acknowledged inspiration to the likes of Sonic Youth and Pavement, but their alumni - most notably brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks - continued on as key players in the underground music community. Although Sudden (vocals/guitar) and Soundtracks (piano/drums) formed the first incarnation of the Swell Maps as far back as 1972, the group did not begin to truly take shape until 1976, when the siblings enlisted bassist Jowe Head and guitarist Richard Earl. In the spirit of punk's "do-it-yourself" mentality, they formed their own label, Rather Records, and issued their debut single - the brief, jarring "Read About Seymour" - in the early weeks of 1978. Local media support soon won the group a distribution pact with Rough Trade, but they did not resurf
ace until over a year later with the single "Dresden Style."

SWELL MAPS-Jane From Occupied Europe LP (Secretly Canadian-$13.99)
In mid-1979, the Swell Maps released their full-length debut A Trip to Marineville, a crazy-quilt of punk energy and Krautrock-influenced clatter. After the release of the speaker-shredding single "Let's Build a Car," the group recorded one final studio LP, Jane from Occupied Europe, before breaking up. Each of the members followed their own career paths, playing solo and forming bands: Sudden formed the Jacobites, Soundtracks joined Crime and the City Solution, and Head played with the Television Personalities. - Jason Ankeny Each album has been remastered, includes liner notes and unreleased photos as well as bonus tracks not available on previous versions of these albums.
TORTOISE-Standards LP (Thrill Jockey-$16.99)
Comes with a digital download card! 2001 : Following the massive success of their 1998 album TNT, Tortoise delivered Standards. In and out of print over the past decade we are happy to finally give everyone what they have been asking for - Standards on vinyl again! Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl with the original heavy duty artworked inner sleeve and custom silk-screened PVC outer bag. The tunes on Standards are direct and immediate, yet they maintain the exploratory edge that has always characterized the group's output. The fusion of instrumental sounds (electric, acoustic, and synthesized) is subtle and subversive. Similarly, the group's fluency within the studio environment gives the finished work a quality that alternates between artifice and reality. Whilst TNT was constructed in the studio using segments recorded, improvised or altered electronically, the Standards sessions began after a period of rehearsal and composition. The contrast, simply stated, is that the
studio was used extensively as a compositional tool for TNT, whereas with Standards it was used predominantly as tool to realize and enhance the existing new compositions. The studio does not impose itself on the recording to the same degree we witnessed on TNT, and the resulting record is in many ways reminiscent of their unadorned self-titled debut.

A CRAZE-Such Bliss CD (Fastcut-$16.99)
Japanese import. "Back in 1983/84, Paul Weller’s Respond label was shunned by all but a few die-hard fans who astutely perceived the label as a logical extension of the ex-Jam frontman’s adventures with The Style Council. During Respond’s second incarnation, the label tasted minor success with both Tracie and The Questions. Its brightest hopes, however, were arguably A Craze, a duo formed by Chris Free (previously with punk band The Users) with singer Lucy Loquette. A Craze’s only single, the serene, Weller-produced Wearing Your Jumper (backed by the haunting She Is So), attracted positive reviews; their only additional recording, Keeping The Boys Amused, graced a Respond sampler LP, Love The Reason.
A Craze have remained a best-kept secret ever since. Such Bliss finally unravels their full story with 15 recordings, including their Respond 45 (but bizarrely not that sampler track), alongside a raft of demos, abandoned recordings and two brand new songs. Within the CD’s stylish design, A Craze are correctly compared to Everything But The Girl, Weekend and Carmel. To these ears, Too Tight (a jazzy reworking of their single) also provokes comparisons with Swing Out Sister, while One Voice One Soul would sit comfortably alongside The Maisonettes’ Heartache Avenue. Blissful." - Record Collector

AIR-Le Voyage Dans La Lune CD (Astralwerks-$17.99)
Score for the restored version of the classic 1902 silent film by Georges Melies. Features vocals from AU REVOIR SIMONE & Victoria Legrand (BEACH HOUSE)

BEACH FOSSILS-What A Pleasure EP CD (Captured Tracks-$8.99)
Following the critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Beach Fossils returns with the beautifully crafted EP, "What a Pleasure". In this brilliant new release Dustin Payseur shares songwriting duties with bassist John Peña which makes for their most dynamic songs yet. Also, on the "Out in the Way" Payseur teams up with the talented Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing for a song that reveals both artists' visions in a way that the world has yet to hear. "What a Pleasure" is full of clean, simple guitar lines that build up to melancholic endings. The mature sound and cleaner production value on "What a Pleasure" presents glimpses of where Beach Fossils have been and where they aim to go.

BEACH FOSSILS-s/t CD (Captured Tracks-$12.99)
Beach Fossils offers warm and inviting melodies that evoke the haunted sounds of another era: straightforward guitar riffs, a kaleidoscope of psychedelic rhythms, and distant, faded vocals all come together to make the perfect soundtrack to an endless summer afternoon. In May of 2009, their debut LP Beach Fossils met with favorable reviews and became known for its jangly, single note guitar style, dusted with summer-fueled romance. Payseur takes influence from music, poetry, art and philosophers (Don Cherry, Ravi Shankar, Rumi, Lao-Tzu and Jean Cocteau), having an equal and crucial impact on his work.

BLOUSE-s/t CD (Captured Tracks-$12.99)
"Blouse is based out of a warehouse in Portland, Oregon. This self-titled debut LP will show Blouse in a new light and to a larger audience. The album is more of an unveiling as each song rolls out the map of new territory that Blouse is claiming, this new wavy sound that is all their own. Hiltons' powerfully alluring voice guides this experience in a dream-like manner. Blouse has hit their stride with this release and will have listeners beckoning' for more."

DEARDARKHEAD-Oceanside 1991-1993 CD (Captured Tracks-$11.99)
Deardarkhead takes its name from an anonymously written Irish poem of the 18th century "Cean Dubh Dilis", about a beautiful girl with black hair. They formed in 1988 on the banks of New Jersey. Over the years DDH has played with the likes of The Lilys, The Psychedelic Furs and Supergrass. This release, Oceanside: 1991-1993, will have something new for loyal fans as well as new ears. Their sound is a blend of post-punk guitar experimentalism as well as a heavy atmospheric dreampop aura. This release is completely remastered, some tracks previously unreleased as well as tracks never before on vinyl.

GRIMES-Visions CD (4AD-$12.99)
Grimes is the moniker of Canadian producer, singer and artist Claire Boucher. She approaches music in a way that is both sensually pleasurable and exploratory; sonic experimentalism run through a 'pop' filter. The music is youthfully schizophrenic and searching, a voyage into the yet undefined territory of post-internet, re-spiritualized sound. Grimes strongly values a physical and communal experience of music (it's danceability), experimental vocalization, and psychedelia. Grimes is self-indulgence, devastation and ecstasy. humanity, spirituality, escapism, identity, reality.

KURYAKIN-A New Day CD (Fastcut-$16.99)
Japanese import. Swedish duo Kuryakin have a new album titled A New Day. From the album, the same titled opening track “A New Day” is a breezy indie pop gem with simple pop harmonies and jangling guitars. Along with all of the great twee pop artists to have come out of Sweden, Kuryakin join their ranks with their new album.

MARK LANEGAN BAND-Blues Funeral CD (4AD-$11.99)
Blues Funeral is the first Mark Lanegan Band album since 2004's Bubblegum. It was recorded in Hollywood, California by Alain Johannes at his 11ad studio. The music was played by Johannes and Jack Irons with appearances from Greg Dulli, Josh Homme et al. Mark Lanegan has sung with Screaming Trees, Queens Of the Stone Age, The Twilight Singers, The Gutter Twins, Soulsavers and Isobel Campbell.

PERFUME GENIUS-Put Your Back N 2 It CD (Matador-$11.99)
Perfume Genius is Mike Hadreas, a Seattle songwriter whose jarring 2010 debut album, Learning, was called "an album of rare, redemptive beauty, one of the most uniquely endearing and quietly forceful debut albums of recent years". His new album, Put Your Back N 2 It, is much more universal, addressing intimacy, power, family, secrecy, and hope not just through his impressionistic lyrics, but the music itself, which is as lush as Learning was stark. Recorded by Drew Morgan and John Goodmanson, this sonically beautiful, more approachable album will connect with more people directly.

SAD DAY FOR PUPPETS-Shift Another Color CD (Fastcut-$11.99)
Japan-only seven-track compilation of one-off singles, B-sides and re-recordings from Sad Day For Puppets, most of which appear on CD for the first time. "Shift Another Color is more than just a tying up of loose ends for completists, it also acts as a great introduction for those new to SDFP's sparkling melodies and squalling shoegaze guitars – matching the quality of their two studio albums thus far, whilst also being a concise seven tracks. Last year's stand alone single Again opens proceedings in grand fashion. Few bands could afford to not include a song of such calibre on a studio album, and the same can be said of 2009's double A-side When You Tell Me That You Love Me/Withering Petals And Dust, the former of which appears twice here; the heartbreakingly tender original version and the blistering, surging rework. Three previous EP tracks are also given the walls-of-guitar makeover. Set Alight is the most successful, the injection of sonic steroids boosting what was alre
ady one of their finest moments, whilst Big Waves is also improved by a less drastic facelift, retaining the fragility of the original. Less successful is the beefed-up remake of Hush which loses some of the soul and sweetness of its 2008 predecessor. On the whole any criticism of 'Shift Another Color' is nitpicking, there isn't any filler here and the compilation of these recordings is useful and worthwhile rather than a fan-exploiting cash-in. It also marks a transition for the band, the lullaby-like melodies remain intact but are being increasingly coated with layers of guitar which are more than worthy of comparisons to the likes of My Bloody Valentine or Dinosaur Jr. SDFP are gradually evolving, honing their sound, and the fact that they're still relatively unknown is criminal. Bring on the next album." - Sounds XP

SHEARWATER-Animal Joy CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
Sub Pop is proud to present Shearwater's Animal Joy, our first album by the band and their eighth overall. Led by Jonathan Meiburg, and featuring drummer Thor Harris, and bassist Kimberly Burke, Shearwater has been a favorite at Sub Pop HQ for years. On Animal Joy, Meiburg ditches the expansive approach of his recent records, particularly the epic trilogy of Palo Santo, Rook and The Golden Archipelago, to create a record that seems shockingly direct, immediate and intensely personal. He's no stranger to lush, crafted recordings, but this one sounds like no prior Shearwater incarnation.

SOFT METALS-s/t CD (Captured Tracks-$12.99)
"Of the billion-odd synth-pop groups coming out of the US right now, Soft Metals are undoubtedly among the most accomplished.
The Portland duo of Patricia Hall and Ian Hicks will release their self-titled debut album on July 19 via Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks, home to Blank Dogs, Wild Nothing, Led Er Est et al. Formed in 2009, they claim to be variously influenced by "early industrial music, minimal synth, 1980s Chicago house, synth pop, and italo disco", and it’s fair to say that traces of all these underground sounds can be detected in their svelte synth-pop productions.
But what makes them stand out from the myriad other biters of these sounds is their punchy, purposeful songwriting, their flab-free arrangements and the crystalline vocals of Hall, which come over like a heavily reverbed, robotized descendent of Young Marble Giants’ Alison Statton. This is proper electronic pop music, coolly (retro)futuristic but sweepingly romantic, and highly recommended to fans of John Foxx, early Human League and modern day standard-bearers like Xeno & Oaklander and John Maus." -FACT Magazine

SUEDE CROCODILES-Stop the Rain CD (Fastcut-$16.99)
Collection of all recorded material from this 1983 indiepop lost-classic band. Previously compiled on LP by Accident Records, but now available on CD with different cover art. Japanese import.

WILD NOTHING-Gemini CD (Captured Tracks-$11.99)
Wild Nothing, is the solo-project of Jack Tatum whose music is inspired by a longtime love affair with nostalgia. His debut full length album, Gemini, is full of dreamy, carefree synth-pop songs that linger with an inexplicable sense of regret.
Prior to embarking on this recent solo-project Tatum sang and played guitar with the Abe Vigodaish tropical punk band Facepaint and the singer/songwriter project Jack and The Whale. In the summer of 2009 The Virginia tech-college student decided to embark on his first creative-solo project playing bass, guitar, synthesizer and drums while recording in his home-studio. He soon emerged with a unique brand of dreamy pop-songs influenced by bands like, My Bloody Valentine, Shop Assistants, Go-Betweens and Cocteau Twins. In 2009 he delivered a memorable cover of the Kate Bush song Cloudbusting, making it clear that Wild Nothing transcended the lo-fi pop-mold. On his debut album, Gemini, Tatum's frail vocals come warped in an oozing neon haze. Carefully orchestrated synth-pop arrangements, trebly guitar riffs and tattered drum machines blend together to create an intriguing, texturally rich glo-pop album that could come only from the young at heart.

WILD NOTHING-Golden Haze EP CD (Captured Tracks-$8.99)
"Over the last year, young Jack Tatum's taken Wild Nothing from the realm of lo-fi Marr-guitared dream-pop bedroom caresses to that of the full band—touring with Neon Indian, playing our neighborhood numerous times, receiving just propers for the touching '80s appropriations of the debut LP Gemini, and releasing a three-song stopgap titled Evertide. A new EP's on the way via Mike Sniper's Captured Tracks label—the tracklist varies depending on format, but the title and title track are constant, not to mention fitting."—Sterogum

WINDY AND CARL-We Wil Always Be CD (Kranky-$12.99)
PITCHFORK 7.4! The first new recordings from Windy & Carl in more than 3 years. "The band might be on their umpteenth release by now, but in their longevity they have never sacrificed quality control, & they have honed their style to a zenith most artists never touch. Sure there might be many newcomers & pretenders, but like so many things in life, sometimes it's best to get the real thing." - Other Music.
The lead track "Transparence" is taken from this release, but appears here with a new introduction. The 10" also features a remix of "Transparence" by the hypnotic percussive group Aa.
Phase two of Beach Fossils starts here. Gone is the "lo-fi" and the comparisons that go with it. More expansive sounds, John Pena and Katie Garcia on guest vocals, keyboard, electronic drums.... Consider it a taster of things to come.

BLACK MARBLE-Weight Against The Door 12" (Hardly Art-$10.99)
Black Marble is one of the latest and greatest additions to the Brooklyn synthwave lexicon, and Weight Against the Door is their debut release, which manages to be bleak, punk, electronic, and uplifting all at once.

CATWALK-One by Words 7" (Captured Tracks-$5.99)
Catwalk's 4th 7" (2nd on C/T) is the beautiful "One By Words." Washed in echoed guitar and propelled by a pulsating bassline, "One By Words" is an instant classic. "Home" is another winner and will be exclusive to this 7". Look for the debut Catwalk LP later this year as well as a short tour with Pains of Being Pure At Heart on the West Coast.

CLOUD NOTHINGS-s/t LP (Carpark-$13.99)
The self-titled Cloud Nothings album shines through with a crispness and boldness that main man Dylan Baldi has always envisioned. The songs now sound as they do live: full of energy, precision, and catchy bits. Dylan plays all the instruments on the album, but this time without the lo-fi scuzz. The excitement and emotion are practically jumping off the grooves.

COCTEAU TWINS-Stars and Topsoil: A Collection 1982-1990 2xLP (4AD-$19.99)
Available for the first time on vinyl, Stars and Topsoil Cocteau Twins retrospective is the first ever collection of the best of their 4AD years. Following their ascent from alternative novices to universally acclaimed artists, Stars and Topsoil is a true testament to one of the most original bands to emerge in the last two decades. Over a career at 4AD that spanned six albums and seven eps, Cocteau Twins retained an intriguing uniqueness of style that defied comparison. This chronological collection is a fitting reminder of why Cocteau Twins are so important.
DEERHOOF-Milkman LP (Polyvinyl-$14.99)
Comes with a digital download code! On banana-colored vinyl; limited to 1,000 copies! Features new mixes and sequencing not found on the original LP. The starting point for Milk Man was a cartoon character created by Japanese artist Ken Kagami, a longtime friend of Deerhoof vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki. In contrast to the earnest guitar rock that predominated on their previous album Apple O', Milk Man featured a broad palette of orchestral colors, echoes of music theater and camp, polished and gaudy arrangements, Stravinskian harmonies, and a more stylized, anonymous playing style resulting partly from recording most of the instruments at separate times rather than playing together as a band, and partly from many of the arrangements being created in a computer.

DEERHOOF-Reveille 180g LP (Polyvinyl-$16.99)
Deerhoof's Reveille is being reissued on 180-gram blue vinyl. California's Deerhoof full-length is a beautiful mixture of Sonic Youth, Unwound, no wave and Yoko Ono. Deerhoof years ago were originally an avant garde band, and have now progressed into an highly original and musically challenging pop band. Recommended. Hand screened covers.

DEERHOOF-Friend Opportunity 180g LP (polyvinyl-$14.99)
In 2007, having toured with Radiohead, the Roots, and Wilco, Deerhoof released Friend Opportunity. The album is the first to feature guitarist John Dietrich and features the same line-up as appears on their recently released brand new album Deerhoof vs. Evil. Having sold out numerous pressings, Friend Opportunity is again being repressed as a limited edition run of 1000 copies on limited 180-gram orange vinyl.

DNTEL-Life is Full of Possibilities 2xLP (Sub Pop-$20.99)
Los Angeles resident Jimmy Tamborello records, releases and occasionally performs music under the name Dntel. Back in 2001, the Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities was originally released by the Plug Research label, and because they’ve always secretly wished they’d put it out back then, Sub Pop is releasing an expanded, re-mastered version of the album to mark its ten-year anniversary.
Life Is Full of Possibilities features collaborations with a number of guest artists, one of which, with Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard (on “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan”), led to the formation of The Postal Service. Because Give Up, the 2003 album by The Postal Service, to date the group’s only full-length release, is Sub Pop’s second best-selling album of all time, this is worth noting. Also worth noting: Life Is Full of Possibilities was very well-received at the time of its original release, earning a 9.3 rave review from Pitchfork, and the following from the BBC: “Few electronic musicians out there have come close to the strength of the songwriting contained within this delicately produced CD.”
The double-LP version will spread the re-mastered original 10-track album across two pieces of vinyl at 45 33 rpm, with the bonus material included in the download that comes with the record. This will be the first time that Life Is Full of Possibilities has ever appeared on vinyl.
FLAMING LIPS-Transmissions From The Satellite Heart LP (Warner Bros.-$20.99)
The addition of guitarist Ronald Jones and drummer Steven Drozd recharges the Lips' batteries for the superb Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, another prismatic delicacy which continues the group's drift toward pop nirvana. In typical fashion, the record's left-field hit, the freakshow sing-along "She Don't Use Jelly," bears little resemblance to the album as a whole; the remainder of Transmissions is much more sonically and structurally ambitious — the towering "Moth in the Incubator" keeps generating new layers of noise before erupting into an amphetamine waltz, "Pilot Can at the Queer of God" divebombs with kamikaze recklessness, and the slow-burning "Oh My Pregnant Head" is as mind-expanding as its title.

FLAMING LIPS-Soft Bulletin 2xLP (Warner Bros-$26.99)
Their follow-up to the experimental four-disc Zaireeka, The Soft Bulletin is an emotional, lush, often symphonic pop masterpiece with distinct melodies amidst the swirl of textures and tones. Yet for all its headphone friendly innovations, the music is still amazingly accessible, never sacrificing popcraft in the name of radical experimentation.

FLAMING LIPS-Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots LP (Warner Bros.-$20.99)
After the symphonic majesty of The Soft Bulletin, the Flaming Lips return with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a sublime fusion of Bulletin's newfound emotional directness, the old-school playfulness of Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, and, more importantly, exciting new expressions of the group's sentimental, experimental sound.
FUCKED UP-Year of the Tiger 12" (Matador-$8.99)
Since 2006, Fucked Up have been releasing an annual 12" single on each Chinese New Year. Year Of The Tiger is an anthemic progressive rock masterpiece featuring guests Jim Jarmusch, Annie-Claude Deschenes and Austra. The 15-minute long track features the band's familiar layers of guitar and roaring vocals, taken to a new level with the addition of piano, Jarmusch's dark recitations and Deschenes's gorgeous crescendos, in this menacing but uplifting story about the predation of predators. $1 from the sale of each record donated to the Save The Tiger fund.
GOTAN PROJECT-La Revancha Del Tango 2xLP (XL-$19.99)
Now available for the first time on vinyl La Revancha Del Tango Gotan Project's classic hit album. The debut by this Paris based trio is a relaxed blend of tango dance rhythms and Argentinean instrumentation. The group was brought together by their passion to combine sound with image and to marry electronic and acoustic music. They built on their house, dub, and hip-hop influenced productions by adding two of Argentina's finest tango musicians, the musical result being supremely distinctive, incorporating bandonion (a form of accordion), violin, and vocals.
THE KILLS-Blood Pressures LP (Domino-$15.99)
The Kills - Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart - are back with a new studio album, Blood Pressures, the highly anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed third album, Midnight Boom. Blood Pressures finds The Kills with their swagger and sass intact, but with a new thoughtfulness and depth - even a tinge of wistfulness and vulnerability - to their always compelling songwriting. As one of the most vital, striking bands recording today, The Kills' vividly unique "rock" is at once effortless, edgy and timeless. For the sessions that became Blood Pressures, Jamie and Alison returned to Key Club Studios in Michigan where they reunited with Midnight Boom engineers Bill Skibbe and Jessica Ruffins. Produced by Jamie Hince, the album was mixed in London by Tom Elmhirst. With their basic sound intact - searing guitars, driving rhythms and sexually charged lyrical savvy - the eleven tracks on Blood Pressures find The Kills embracing a fuller sound and becoming more adventurous in t
he studio, while the lyrics are honest, heartfelt and sometimes just plain heartbreaking. Departing from the sparse, angular sound of Midnight Boom, the duo explores complex textures on Blood Pressures. There is heavier instrumentation and layered, huge-sounding harmonies. Alison and Jamie play all the instruments on the album, including piano and mellotron.
LILACS AND CHAMPAGNE-s/t LP (Mexican Summer-$14.99)
As the producing-team behind’Grails, Alex Hall and Emil Amos have hybridized and warped various culture’s versions of psych music over the past decade. With their new project Lilacs and Champagne, they’ve created another umbrella under which to tweak hip-hop, tape-collage and the darkest creases of 70's film-soundtracks with their lysergic and perverse style of head-music. The project’s name and imagery evoke a strange thrift-store mystery LP you might come across, unsure if you’ve discovered an exotic dub record, a flowery Bacharach AM radio classic or something by an obscure duo of Swedish avant-techno producers.
The record began under the influence of Madlib’s production style….which had suggested that writing songs using an Akai MPC sampler would force the two to stretch their legs and explode any expectations created by records they’ve made in the past. But rather than sampling the funk and soul canon of traditional hip hop, they pulled from disparate sources such as Polish private press hippie records, indistinguishable radio noise or the chopped and reversed sounds of Jayne Mansfield’s head being decapitated. Layers of instruments and found sound were then painted over the original samples until entirely new directions were created and taken to their logical conclusion… creating something simultaneously alien and familiar… something like the sound of Nurse with Wound collaborating with J-Dilla.

LONEY DEAR-Hall Music LP (Polyvinyl-$14.99)
After his last time touring the United States in support of 2009's Dear John, Emil Svanängen returned home to Sweden and began to play shows with chamber orchestras throughout the country. As such, he was forced to revisit his earlier material -- re-writing and re-arranging these older songs for performance on a grander scale. This experience had an indelible influence on the writing and recording of the appropriately titled Hall Music, an expansive record that finds Svanängen closer to creating the type of orchestral music he has always sought to bring to life on stage (whether he's actually playing with an orchestra or not).
Above all, Hall Music is a study in merging contrasts, an album of impossible pairings. The pacing is simultaneously fast and slow, with gently weaving harmonic structures propelled forward by quickly moving notes. The instrumentation is orchestral and synthesized; organic and invented. A church bell paired effortlessly with horns and an analog keyboard. Though at first listen it occupies your ears for just over a half-hour, it is an all-consuming sonic affair. It is intimate music that effortlessly fills vast, empty spaces -- in your head, in your room, in your life -- with a grip so delicate yet unyielding that you can't (and don't want to) escape it. Drawing from both of the emotional states it joins together -- joy and darkness, Hall Music creates its own unique expanse -- one you'll surely want to re-visit again and again.
M83-Dead Cities, Red Seas, Lost Ghosts 2xLP+CD (Mute-$20.99)
Comes with CD version of the album! At last! The domestic release of this groundbreaking record. M83 touches upon all genres, from electronica to pop to ambient. Their distinct sound emerged after just one album, and it was both modern and melancholic. The group makes machines seem human, by endowing them with a mysterious and innocent character, one that mirrors the personality of the two band members, Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. This album is more ambitious than its predecessor, complex yet accessible (thanks to its melodic effectiveness), and possesses a more assertive sound. Anthony and Nicolas have raised the bar -- without foregoing their exceptional sense of melody or losing their ability to communicate sound in a fresh new way. While critics may still occasionally evoke Boards of Canada or My Bloody Valentine, most discuss M83 and the band's two musicians as artists in complete control of their technical tools who create timeless melodies with universal em
otions. Let yourself be swept away...resistance is futile.
This domestic vinyl release of "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" features the bonus track, "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts," unavailable on the import.
M83-Before the Dawn Heals Us 2xLP (Mute-$20.99)
Before the Dawn Heals Us is M83's powerful follow up to Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts, this is an album that Kevin Shields himself would be proud to call his own. Before the Dawn Heals Us radiates with walls of electronic drones, big rock beats and hauntingly beautiful vocals which seem to fly along-side everything seamlessly. Just in his early twenties, Anthony Gonzalez continues to create music with incredible maturity and a vision, which at this time seems to go unparalleled. "If the group's cinematic qualities are what audiences embraced, consider the new Before The Dawn Heals Us a young indie filmmaker's first Hollywood blockbuster." - Magnet
MAGNETIC FIELDS-Andrew in Drag 7" (Merge-$5.99)
Includes digital download card, limited to 1,000 copies. The Magnetic Fields return to Merge! "Andrew in Drag," the A-side of this limited edition vinyl seven-inch is taken from the Magnetic Fields' upcoming Love Under the Sea, due out on Merge Records in March 2012. The B-side, "When Next in Love I Fall," is a non-album track.

MEMORY TAPES-Player Piano LP (Carpark-$13.99)
Player Piano is the second full length from Davye Hawk's Memory Tapes. It was, like its predecessor, the highly acclaimed Seek Magic, recorded at Dayve's home studio in rural New Jersey, where he juggles looking after his young daughter and being a musician. While Seek Magic was quite an electronic sounding record with lots of dance music tropes, Player Piano is all about the melody.

MINKS-Araby 7" (Captured Tracks-$5.99)
Previously released on cassette tape, the Minks' single "Araby" is seeing it's proper release on vinyl 7" along with the glistening B-side "Little Fawn".
In April of 2010 Captured Tracks released a 7" single by an unknown New York band called MINKS. On the date of release, few people knew any information about the musicians behind the music. Most writers and listeners assumed that it was a one man bedroom music project, like many other artists on the label, and were confused even more when six musicians appeared on stage to perform songs at the first MINKS concert. The first single, titled "Funeral Song" was quickly praised by music journalists and publications like Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Fader. Fader said that it sounded like "If Robert Smith gave birth to a baby, and the baby was actually a cassette of Cure demos that had a lot more staying power than actual Cure demos." Seasons changed, and MINKS returned with a follow up 7? single titled "Ophelia," which continued to shadow people's minds with curious thoughts and open ears. The uniqueness of these early singles showed the ability to balance the feelings of joy and sad
ness, as well as a door to past and present worlds. For these songs were less about the songs themselves, but the ability to make you feel a certain emotion when listening to them. No element alone would stand out, but as a whole, the swirling waves of sound which Pitchfork would describe as "all texture and drift," would drive you away to a nostalgic place in your mind.
NIRVANA-Bleach LP (Sub Pop-$14.99)
Continuing their legacy of reminding people Nirvana had a record before Nevermind, Sub Pop Records presents a non-deluxe, affordably-priced, single-LP version of Bleach, Nirvana’s debut album. Originally released in June of 1989, Bleach was re-mastered, deluxed up and reissued in November of 2009. That version of the Bleach LP is two pieces of 180-gram white vinyl with a 16-page booklet. It’s really nice. It’s also pricey. This sturdy single-LP version of Bleach contains the full re-mastered album, as found on that Bleach: Deluxe Edition, and a pretty printed inner sleeve, for a much lower price.
OF MONTREAL-Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy 180g LP (Polyvinyl-$13.99)
Pressed on high-quality 180gram vinyl! Originally released in 1998, Of Montreal's second full-length album features uncredited appearances by members of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Late B.P. Helium. The album was the first in which Of Montreal built characters around concepts. Although not as developed as later Of Montreal concept albums, The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy is infused with Vaudevillian elements that foreshadowed Of Montreal's break-out albums The Gay Parade and Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies.
ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER-Replica LP (Software-$14.99)
Replica is an electronic song cycle based around audio procured from TV ad compilations. These sample-based meditations are as lyrical as they are ecological, featuring re- purposed "ghost vocals" which serve as narration for Lopatin's signature amorphous, ambient passages. Lopatin's Juno-60 is still prominent, but Returnal's placid, synthetic surroundings are accelerated through darker, more unpredictable terrains via Lopatin's use of samplers, analog filtering, tape-op, piano, plate reverb and sub-bass. The result is a heightened sense of music as part and parcel of an overall sonic terrain.
Hand-numbered out of 1000, on clear vinyl! Real Estate's Martin Courtney (songwriter, vocals, guitar), Alex Beeker (bass) and Matthew Mondanile (guitar; also of Ducktails and Predator Vision) all hail from suburban New Jersey and their songs evoke the soft bliss of giving your formative, teenage years enough time to waste and beer upon which to glug. Joined now by suburban Massachusetts' Etienne Duguay on drums, the fact that Real Estate only ever sound like a gaggle of grown-up teenage pals is testament to the ease of carving out your own niche in a town that's the same as countless others across America.
Words on Music re-released the album in 2002 with double the number of tracks as the original album. These new songs included covers of the Jean Paul Sartre Experience song “Own Two Feet” and the 18th Dye song “Merger” as well as unreleased songs recorded between 1995 and 1996. The Captured Tracks LP release of A Folding Sieve will include the original release’s tracks as well as “Faded” and “Own Two Feet”. THE SOFT MOON-Total Decay EP 12" (Captured Tracks-$11.99)
Follow up to The Soft Moon's critically acclaimed self-titled LP! "The Soft Moon's impressive, immersive self-titled debut appeared courtesy of Captured Tracks at the end of 2010-- a time when folks were more concerned with Holidays than post-apocalyptic industrial-pop-- so it managed to escape some of the "best of" lists it should've haunted. The San Francisco trio, led by founder Luis Vasquez and featuring an ancillary member who does flickering live visuals that'd make sense with Bauhaus the band and/or the movement, is returning with an EP, Total Decay, out on Halloween, again via Captured Tracks. The title track's a swirling, heaving trip, one more deeply entrenched in nihilistic bleakness than previous material. " -Pitchfork
TAMARYN-The Waves LP (Mexican Summer-$14.99)
Comes with a digital download! Following a spate of EPs and singles comes the debut album by Tamaryn, entitled The Waves. After collaborating with producer Rex John Shelverton (ex-Vue/The Audience/Portraits of Past), Tamaryn left New York and settled in Rex's hometown of San Francisco to record their first full-length. Whereas Tamaryn's earlier material was rooted in traditional goth-psych overtones, The Waves represents an incredible step forward in terms of her approach. These nine songs combine driving pop and lush balladry with layered, guitar-driven ethereal atmospheres, against which Tamaryn's voice, languid and restrained, melts against its surface. The Waves is a masterful collision of hypnotic psychedelia and bittersweet dream pop.

VERONICA FALLS-Beachy Head 7" (Captured Tracks-$5.99)
"Veronica Falls have written a pop song about everybody’s favourite place to top themselves and it is really really good. I mean, never has singing along to a graphical location where peepul choose to end it all seemed quite such top larks. This is indie of a very particular, very British, timeless and guileless sort, and it's also enough to remind a person why they plumped for plaid over pop in the first place. Terrific." -Drowned in Sound

VIVIAN GIRLS-Share the Joy LP (Polyvinyl-$15.99)
On their third album (and Polyvinyl debut) Share the Joy, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls continue to sharpen and refine their transcendent mix of garage thrash, girl-group warmth and infectious pop hooksmanship. The trio's vibrant blend of guitar noise and melodic sweetness has already made Vivian Girls one of America's most celebrated and influential young bands, and has helped to spark a wave of similarly-inclined female-fronted acts that've followed in their wake. The ten-song Share the Joy finds the threesome - guitarist/vocalist Cassie Ramone, bassist/vocalist Kickball Katy and new drummer Fiona Campbell - continuing to evolve and expand, building on the D.I.Y. achievements of their 2008 debut Vivian Girls and its 2009 follow-up Everything Goes Wrong, while delivering their most memorable songs and most focused performances yet. Their new tunes successfully venture into challenging new musical and lyrical territory, reflecting the band members' developing instrumental rapport a
nd their far-reaching musical influences, while retaining the raw immediacy that originally endeared the group to its fans. "It's cleaner and more hi-fi than the previous records," Cassie says of Share the Joy, which the band recorded at Rear House, the home studio run by Jarvis Taveniere (of the Brooklyn combo Woods), who engineered the album. "The sound is more open, more free. I think that this album really shows our strengths as musicians, and shows us melding together musically. It's more psychedelic and less shoegaze. There's also a lot of organ on it, which is new for us."
Share the Joy's musical and emotional depth is reflected on "The Other Girls" and "Light in Your Eyes," each of which clocks in at over six minutes. The former tune manages to encompass hammering hardcore, Beach Boys-esque melodic bliss, Neil Young/Nirvana-inflected guitar frenzy and ethereal harmonic drone, while the latter closes the album on a triumphant note of surging sonic uplift. Elsewhere, "Dance If You Wanna" and "Take It As It Comes" rank with the band's most intoxicating pop confections, while "Lake House" and "Vanishing of Time" maintain a thoughtful, introspective tone that may come as a surprise to those who'd had Vivian Girls pegged as a lo-fi garage outfit. The new songs' openhearted diversity justifies Share the Joy's unironic title. Cassie borrowed it from a tune by Burt Bacharach, one of her biggest songwriting influences, which appeared on Bacharach and Hal David's ill-fated '70s musical version of Lost Horizon. "I was reading a book about him and I notic
ed the title 'Share the Joy,' and the blurb about the song said that it had 'one of his most haunting melodies,'" Cassie explains. "I immediately thought that was so interesting - a deeply haunting song called 'Share the Joy.' I hunted the song down and listened to it and totally fell in love . . . Share the Joy has the most diverse batch of songs of any of our albums," Cassie observes. "I feel like these songs are more expansive; a lot of the themes and lyrics are less direct than other albums. These songs focus a lot on the themes of alienation, reconciliation, identity, and trying to figure out what really matters in life. It's a dark album, but unlike our first two albums, it has a happy ending . . . Our music continues to get more and more defined and developed, but it's never going to be completely polished," Cassie asserts; adding, "A thing I like about our band is that we seem to mean different things to different people. Another thing I'm proud of is that, while a lot of people may have initially heard about us through internet buzz and things like that, I think our audience likes our music because it's honest and because we mean it. I think that people can pick up on that."

WIDOWSPEAK-Gun Shy 7" (Captured Tracks-$5.99)
Widowspeak are back with their 2nd single "Gun Shy." The dusky A-Side can be considered a one-song introduction the band, with it's nods to Morricone via Television verse and more direct pop-inflected (bust still hazey) chorus, it throws the gauntlet for what you'll be hearing on their debut LP in August. Live favorite Chris Isaak cover "Wicked Game" is added as an exclusive B-Side.

WIDOWSPEAK-Harsh Realm 7" (Captured Tracks-$5.99)
Widowspeak is a trio from Brooklyn by way of Tacoma and Chicago, comprised of Molly Hamilton (vocals, guitar), Michael Stasiak (drums), and Rob Thomas (guitar). Stasiak and Hamilton both grew up in the dreary Pacific Northwest, and were part of the same small music community; both also ended up making the transcontinental move to New York after high school. In the spring of 2010, the two started working out Hamilton's song ideas in her railroad apartment living room, and Stasiak invited Thomas, a Chicago ex-pat he'd met in college, to a practice. His additions to the songs were bizarre and frenetic and exactly what the band needed. They gave it a name she'd picked out years before, and Widowspeak was born. Using primarily the 1950's and 1990's as stylistic jumping-off points, the band writes a combination of eerie ballads and swampy mid-tempo pop. The tension between Hamilton's dreamy melodies and Thomas's angular, psych-influenced lead guitar creates a visceral energy that p
ermeates each of the young band's songs. Although initially a sparse setup, with Stasiak on a half kit, the band has since expanded their sound and even incorporated bass into new material.

WIDOWSPEAK-s/t LP (Captured Tracks-$14.99)
The album, recorded at Rear House with Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, documents Widowspeak’s inaugural year. In a relaxed studio setting songs born from those first jittery practices could breathe. The trio expanded their modest instrumentation while retaining a sparse aesthetic. The resulting record offers an eerie ambience, at times channeling 1950's jukebox pop, at others, 1960’s psychedelia. While garnering comparisons to slow-moving 1990's acts such as Mazzy Star or Cat Power, Widowspeak have defined a sound that's earnestly nostalgic, and increasingly confident. Even so, these are songs about heartache. They are songs about homesickness, about longing for pine forests, reckless youth, and dark nights in strange cities.
M83-Hurry Up, We're Dreaming 2xCD (Mute-$20.99)
Three years in the making, this sixth album from M83 (aka Anthony Gonzalez) is one of Autumn 2011's most highly anticipated releases. Grandiose in scale, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is inspired by Smashing Pumpkin's revered double disc Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness.
Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen and including contributions from Brad Laner (Medicine) on guitar, Saturdays=Youth vocalist Morgan Kibby, and guest vocalist Zola Jesus, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (featuring first single "Midnight City"), is a double-album journey that takes us to the horizon and introduces us to new landscapes. About awakening, craving, and conquering, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming pushes into new vocal territory for M83. Here we see Anthony Gonzalez test out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream.
Soaring and scraping up against the sky while sharing each uncharted frontier with new collaborators is what M83 does best.
ALLO DARLIN'-s/t LP (Fortuna Pop-$19.99)
For fans of: the Magnetic Fields, Camera Obscura, Hefner, Kimya Dawson, Jens Lekman, The Lucksmiths, The Wave Pictures. Allo Darlin' is the music of Australian-born, London-based songwriter Elizabeth Morris, and runs the spectrum from joyous, breezy, punky, jump-around pop with fabulous harmonies to sparse ukulele and steel guitar heartbreakers.

BATTLES-Gloss Drop 2xLP (Warp-$20.99)
Gatefold vinyl with poster. "It is true that Gloss Drop is a bewitching, entrancing album that defies both categorization and easy analysis. Just as Mirrored was a massive leap on from the early EPs that first got them noticed, this is truly another seismic shift, propelling them once more into uncharted territory. It is a sheer sense of fun, unpredictability and inventiveness that sets Battles apart from every other contemporary group. Drummer John Stanier sums this up succinctly: 'I don't think challenging, new music has to be super serious all the time. That's really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring.' While other acts are content to deal in revivalism or stasis, Battles are still looking for far-off boundaries to study and then demolish, searching for new and exotic styles to mesh together. Stanier concludes: 'When we're writing songs, no one in this group has ever said 'Wait, we've gone too far. This isn't a Battles song.' Because what is a Battles
song? We don't know. All I know is that there are no parameters and no boundaries. That is the whole point and has been since day one.'" Includes poster. Featuring guest appearances by: Matias Aguayo, Gary Numan, Kazu Makino and Yamantaka Eye.

JORGE BEN-Forca Bruta 180g LP (4 Men With Beards-$17.99)
"Originally released in 1970, Fôrça Bruta is an absolute classic from one of Brazil's most consistently great artists. Despite being embraced by the tropicalia movement (with Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa both covering his songs) there are no psychedelic meanderings to be found within these grooves -- this set is pure samba-soul. Jorge Ben is backed here by the innovative Trio Mocotó who never overplay and allow his soulful vocal delivery and samba guitar to be the centerpieces." 180 gram vinyl.

DON CHERRY-Complete Communion LP (Blue Note-$9.99)
Originally released in 1965, Don Cherry's first album for Blue Note featured Leandro "Gato" Barbieri (tenor sax), Henry Grimes (bass) and Edward Blackwell (drums). "...all the musicians free-associated off of each theme, engaging in intense, abstract dialogues before moving on to the next." --All Music Guide

JOHN COLTRANE-Giant Steps 45rpm 2x180gLP Box (Atlantic-$54.99)
A landmark, genre-defining album, Giant Steps has been hailed as John Coltrane's finest work. Coltrane and his bandmates create compelling, frenzied, and beautiful sonic landscapes which helped revolutionize jazz. Released in January 1960, Giant Steps was John's first album devoted entirely to his own compositions and confirmed his command of tenor saxophone as well as his emerging skill as a composer. This deluxe, limited edition 2LP comes packaged in a numbered, collectible slipcase which is a visual replica of the original tape box.

ROSCOE HOLCOMB-The High Lonesome Sound LP (Smithsonian Folkways-$16.99)
"Originally released in 1965, this is Holcomb's first full album for Folkways. The man for whom the term The High Lonesome Sound was coined certainly shows why here. This is Appalachian folk music, both beautiful and harsh, harrowing and tender. Essential recordings from this Kentucky native lovingly reissued in a perfect replica of the original Folkways jacket and including a reproduction of the original information booklet."

DANIEL JOHNSTON-Yip Jump Music LP (High Wire-$14.99)
Legendary original 1983 Stress Records cassette from Austin outsider singer/songwriter who's had work covered by and/or influenced NIRVANA, YO LA TENGO, tons of others. Incl. his hits "Chord Organ Blues," "The Beatles," "Speeding Motorcycle," "Sorry Entertainer," "Rocket Ship" & "Casper the Friendly Ghost".

THE LA'S-s/t 180g LP (Plain-$16.99)
Originally released in 1990 on the Go! Discs label, The La's self-titled debut is a tasty nugget of classic British pop (Kinks, Small Faces) matched with the post-punk jangle of groups like the Smiths and XTC. Predating the second British invasion by a number of years, this, the sole album by the La's features the classic "There She Goes" along with eleven other slices of pop goodness. Back in print on vinyl for the first time since its original release.

LOW-I Could Live in Hope 180g LP (Plain-$20.99)
"Originally released (only on CD) by Vernon Yard Recordings in 1994, I Could Live In Hope is the debut release from Minnesota's slo-core pioneers. Produced by the legendary Kramer, Low's first recordings show a band emerging fully formed with a sound that they carry on to this day. On vinyl for the very first time." On 180 gram vinyl.

LOW-Long Division 180g LP (Plain-$16.99)
LOWER PRICE!! 2nd album originally released on Virgin Records' Vernon Yard imprint in 1995. These Minnesota slowcore legends established themselves as critical darlings w/ their striking vocal harmonies, slow tempos & minimalist song structures.

MAZZY STAR-Among My Swan 180g LP (Plain-$16.99)
"Mazzy Star's third and final album, originally released in 1996, is a perfect finale to the band's career, another fine work of hushed folk-rock and gentle psychedelia. The atmospheric guitar of David Roback and the hauntingly gorgeous vocals of Hope Sandoval are complimented here with help from William Reed of The Jesus & Mary Chain among others." 180 gram vinyl housed in a full-color printed inner sleeve.

NEW ORDER-Movement 180g LP (Rhino-$17.99)
MOVEMENT, their 1981 debut, finds the group exploring the future after Joy Division with darkly melodic stand-outs including "Truth," "Denial" and "Dreams Never End." This is the first step in the transition from the tragically ended Joy Division into New Order, and the first glimpse of the band that would redefine dance and rock music.

NEW ORDER-Power Corruption & Lies 180g LP (Rhino-$17.99)
New Order came into its own on POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES ('83), a breakthrough disc that Rolling Stonecalled, "a remarkable declaration of independence." Features the signature tracks "Age Of Consent," "Blue Monday," and "Your Silent Face." Their second album moved them past the cathartic debut that still dealt with finding their post-Joy Division identitiy. Coming into their own as an exciting hybrid of dance and rock, this 1983 classic solidified their sound.

PULP-This is Hardcore 180g 2xLP (Plain-$24.99)
Super deluxe 180gm 2LP vinyl in gatefold sleeve! Originally released in 1998, this was at once the artistic pinnacle of 90s Brit-pop, & the genre's comedown record, marking the end of an era w/ its ruminations on growing old (JARVIS COCKER wrote & recorded the album at the age of 33, which may also explain the album's Jesus fixation), fearful, & bitter. Drawing influence from Bowie & Roxy Music, rather than the Stones & Beatles, here he crafted one of the darkest yet anthemic albums of all time. An absolute masterpiece .

ELLIOTT SMITH-Roman Candle 180g LP (Kill Rock Stars-$16.99)
Kill Rock Stars is proud to re-issue Roman Candle, Elliott Smith's first solo album, originally released on Portland's Cavity Search Records in 1994. Roman Candle is now re-mastered for the re-release by Roger Seibel (SAE) and Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott's family. Originally released in very limited LP quantity, this is the first time that Roman Candle is widely available on both standard and 180 gram vinyl.
'Elliott Smith began his career like most aspiring musicians in the Northwestern states: putting in the requisite hours in a grunge band. Being a team player, however, is not Smith's forte. After those buzzy shows in the bars of Portland, OR, he would retreat backstage with his acoustic guitar and whisper his own quiet songs to himself. This album is his first attempt to record those songs, and they capture that feeling perfectly: a loner retreating from the noisy tension of life with others, finding solace in musical solitude. Roman Candle was, in fact, recorded in solitude on a four-track in a basement. Smith played all the instruments himself. He has said that he's always surprised when people call his songs "sad," because playing them always made him happy. You can hear that reclusive joy in the light bounce of the melodies and hushed harmonies (which recall Simon & Garfunkel). But his lyrics are haunted by the downbeat, drug-addled life from which he was retreating. For
all their cryptic cleverness, there is a restless unhappiness in his fragmented stories of alienated urbanites. After that description, a reference to the definitive folk loner, Nick Drake, is inevitable. Smith's whispery vocals and able fingerpicking deserve the comparison. The highlight of Roman Candle is the title track. The quietly driving acoustic guitars and threatening bass create a disturbing portrait of a human time bomb, barely containing a seething and simmering undercurrent of bitterness. The rest of the album, by comparison, is pure sunlight.' - All Music Guide

ELLIOTT SMITH-From A Basement On a Hill 180g 2xLP (Kill Rock Stars-$17.99)
Elliott Smith has been a patron saint of the indie scene since his days helming Portland heroes Heatmiser. As a solo artist, Smith led a revolution of home four-trackers, from Beck to Cat Power, out of the bedroom and into the studio, where Smith's fondness for Beatlesque melody led to some of the most beautifully orchestrated pop of the last decade. From a Basement on the Hill is Smith's final recording and finds Smith returning to an edgier, guitar-driven sound, alongside his trademark heart-rending balladry. From a Basement on the Hill was originally released on October 19, 2004 on ANTI- Records and is now proudly re-issued by Kill Rock Stars - now home of all of Elliott's indie releases. Elliott had been working on the record at the time of his death. Elliott's family hired producer Rob Schanpf (Either/Or, XO, Figure 8) and Joanna Bolme to mix and produce the album. The LP is available again on both standard and 180 gram vinyl.

SPACEMEN 3-Perfect Prescription 180g LP (Fire-$17.99)
This is the album on which they perfected their woozy, psychedelic drone-pop, moving beyond mere tribute to their influences into a world all their own. A concept record about a drug trip, from the euphoric high of album opener "Take Me To The Other Side," to the drowsy, disturbed finish of "Call The Doctor," this is, arguably, the band's finest moment & the album that best represents the creative collaboration of main members SONIC BOOM & JASON PIERCE

SPACEMEN 3-Walkin' With Jesus 180g 12" (Fire-$14.99)
First 12-inch single for Glass Records released in 1986. Contains the early version of "Walkin' With Jesus (Sound Of Confusion)", the full 17-minute monster rampage through the 13th Floor Elevators' "Rollercoaster" & the original "Feel So Good"

SPACEMEN 3-Transparent Radiation EP 180g 12" (Fire-$14.99)
"Second 12" single for Glass Records released in 1987. Contains 'Transparent Radiation', the complete and original version of 'Ecstasy Symphony', 'Transparent Radiation (Flashback)', the unedited version of 'Things'll Never Be The Same' and the 10-minute lengthy remake of the MC5's 'Starship'."

SPACEMEN 3-Take Me to the Other Side 180g 12" (Fire-$14.99)
"Third 12" single for Glass Records released in 1988. Contains 'Take Me To The Other Side' along with The Perfect Prescription out-take unfinished instrumental (late nite homage to Stax Records' heyday) 'Soul 1' and 'That's Just Fine'."

SPIRITUALIZED-Pure Phase 2xLP (Plain-$22.99)
2nd album, from 1995. A more symphonic sound as well as a dreamy rock grandeur. Think Brian Wilson & La Monte Young recording together. More than just psychedelic, it's celestial

TELEVISION PERSONALITIES-And Don't The Kids Just Love It 180g LP (Fire-$16.99)
"The first full-length release from the UK's Television Personalities was originally released in 1981. And Don't The Kids Just Love It is lo-fi, minimalist, and quirky pop, post-punk, psychedelia, and folk from one of the era's most idiosyncratic songwriters. Featuring such classic tracks as 'I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives' and 'A Picture of Dorian Gray,' this is one of the greatest and strangest debut records ever."

TELEVISION PERSONALITIES-Mummy You're Not Watching Me LP (Fire-$16.99)
"The second full length from Television Personalities, also released in 1981, is more psychedelic than the first, but still with plenty of dry and acerbic wit. Featuring the classic title track and the acid rock drone of 'David Hockney's Diaries,' a style and sound that Daniel Treacy would explore further on subsequent records. Eccentric post-punk and pop from one the UK's most original bands."

TYCHO-Dive 2xLP (Ghostly International-$19.99)
Scott Hansen, better known as TYCHO & as graphic artist ISO50, spent nearly a decade since his last effort before dropping "Dive" on an unsuspecting public. It pays tribute to Tycho's prismatic past but spends most of it's time pointing to the project"s not-too-distant future. All versions come in slightly different variations of art!

WEEN-God Ween Satan 180g 2xLP (Plain-$20.99)
"Originally released on Twin/Tone in 1990, God Ween Satan was the first album from the eclectic and eccentric duo of Dean and Gene Ween. Twenty-six songs covering nearly as many genres: metal, rock, soul, folk, pop, experimental, and more are covered all with the brilliant mix of humor and pop prowess that only Ween have been able to achieve."

ZOMBIES-Odyssey and Oracle LP (Big Beat - $22.99)
'Odessey and Oracle was one of the flukiest (and best) albums of the 1960s, and one of the most enduring long-players to come out of the entire British psychedelic boom, mixing trippy melodies, ornate choruses, and lush Mellotron sounds with a solid hard rock base. But it was overlooked completely in England and barely got out in America (with a big push by Al Kooper, who was then a Columbia Records producer); and it was neglected in the U.S. until the single "Time of the Season," culled from the album, topped the charts nearly two years after it was recorded, by which time the group was long disbanded. Ironically, at the time of its recording in the summer of 1967, permanency was not much on the minds of the band members. Odessey and Oracle was intended as a final statement, a bold last hurrah, having worked hard for three years only to see the quality of their gigs decline as the hits stopped coming. The results are consistently pleasing, surprising, and challenging: "Hung
Up on a Dream" and "Changes" are some of the most powerful psychedelic pop/rock ever heard out of England, with a solid rhythm section, a hot Mellotron sound, and chiming, hard guitar, as well as highly melodic piano. "Changes" also benefits from radiant singing. "This Will Be Our Year" makes use of trumpets (one of the very few instances of real overdubbing) in a manner reminiscent of "Penny Lane"; and then there's "Time of the Season," the most well-known song in their output and a white soul classic. Not all of the album is that inspired, but it's all consistently interesting and very good listening, and superior to most other psychedelic albums this side of the Beatles' best and Pink Floyd's early work.' - All Music Guide

AMOR DE DIAS-Street of the Love of Days CD (Merge-$13.99)
Amor de Días (Spanish for "love of days") is the supergroup formed by Alasdair MacLean of THE CLIENTELE and Lupe Núñez-Fernández of PIPAS. Over the course of three years, they quietly put together their debut record during evenings and weekends as they called in local friends (Louis Philippe) and visiting musicians (Damon and Naomi, Gary Olson) for sessions, building up the songs' multifaceted arrangements and vocal harmonies with harps, bouzoukis, strings, recorders, and brass over the core of dual Spanish guitars and the dream imagery of their bilingual lyrics. The result is a focused, cohesive jewel of chamber pop that reflects a little of Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso's elegant brand of bossa nova, a bit of Erik Satie's haunting night music, and a large dose of spooky psychedelic folk. But the beautiful harmony that sings throughout the record makes it all their own. At times spare and empty, at times rich with instrumental texture, and at times jazz-tinged and hypnotic, S
treet of the Love of Days rivals anything either Alasdair or Lupe has recorded before.

THE BIG PINK-Future This CD (4AD-$11.99)
Running in at ten tracks in 45 minutes, Future This commands your attention throughout. Opening with its first single, "Stay Gold", a track written about doing what makes you happy, so immediate you could be forgiven for thinking they've not been away. From there, the album is paced perfectly, with future live anthems ("Rubbernecking", "1313", "Jump Music"), counterbalanced with a set of songs that show a more subtle side ("Hit The Ground (Superman)", "Give It Up" and title track "Future This").

HOWLER-America Give Up CD (Rough Trade-$8.99)
Howler is the brainchild of 19-year-old frontman Jordan Gatesmith. Last winter, Gatesmith had been playing guitar for the Minneapolis band, Total Babe. But the overwhelming desire to create his own songs, in his own band, prompted him to hole up with his laptop and a guitar and within weeks he had written the tracks that became the genesis for the band's debut EP This One's Different. Almost as quickly he found the people to play them with. Joining Jordan in Howler are Ian Nygaard (guitar), France Camp (bass), Max Petrek (keyboards) and Brent Mayes (drums).

MAGNETIC FIELDS-Realism CD (Nonesuch-$15.99)
Magnetic Fields' third Nonesuch disc, Realism, is the flipside to the industrial pop of Distortion, the quartet's brilliant 2008 homage to, of all things, the clangorous sound of the Jesus and Mary Chain. While Distortion was recorded quickly and noisily in the stairwells and rooms of the New York City apartment building to which singer-songwriter-bandleader Stephen Merritt was about to bid adieu for California, Realism was cut in the distortion-free environs of a Los Angeles studio, and its sound is as pristine as a plein-air painting. There are no drum kits to be heard, and the fascinatingly varied instrumentation - guitars, accordions, violins, cellos, tablas, banjos, tuba, even a smattering of mellifluous falling leaves - did not need to be plugged in. And, as with Distortion, the album credits emphasize: No Synths.
With tongue only slightly in cheek, Merritt has taken to declaring Realism his "folk" album. To get the point across, there is an upbeat, sing-along number early in the set called "We Are Having a Hootenany." Merritt's inspirations, however, were the orchestrated, mostly British folk of the late sixties/early seventies--which owe as much to sixties psychedelia as to traditional music--and the work of Judy Collins, who stretched the boundaries of "folk" with the chamber-pop arrangements of such albums as In My Life and Wildflowers.
Like Collins, Merritt favors variety and theatricality. She skipped from Jacques Brel to the Beatles; he goes from the trippy, toy-box melodies of "The Dolls' Tea Party" and "Painted Flower" to the foot-stomping rhythms of "The Dada Polka" (for which one only has to get up and "do something"). There's even a deceptively festive holiday number, "Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree," featuring a lusty chorus sung in German -- Kurt Weill in a holiday mood. In content, Merritt's songs veer between longing and loneliness, desire and dismissal, romance and revenge. Reality is as distorted as ever, and the characters who populate his songs are never just plain folk. As Jon Pareles of the New York Times put it in a review of Magnetic Fields' 2008 Town Hall concert, Merritt's songs are "elegantly phrased, understatedly sardonic tales of disillusionment. The loftier the dreams, the greater the letdown, an insight he plays for both chuckles and heartache."
Along with his long-time band-mates Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson and John Woo, Merritt is joined again by vocalist Shirley Simms, (whose plaintive tone on Distortion lent poignancy to the murderous fantasy of "California Girls" and the erotic musings in "The Nun's Litany") and accordionist Daniel Handler (a/k/a novelist Lemony Snicket, with whom Merritt created the Gothic Archies' faux children's disc, The Tragic Treasury). Also on board: horn player Johnny Blood and violinist Ida Pearle, familiar to fans of Magnetic Fields' earlier, independently released work. The quartet, along with Simms, are planning a small-theatre tour of the states to coincide with the release of Realism.

STEPHIN MERRITT-Obscurities CD (Merge-$13.99)
Obscurities is a collection of hard-to-find recordings from Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields) dating back to his time on Merge (1994-1999) and prior. The 14 tracks on Obscurities - including five previously unreleased songs – were recorded prior to the release of The Magnetic Fields' seminal album, 69 Love Songs, the collection which established Merritt as one of this generation's most talented songwriters. Three of the unreleased tracks hail from The Song from Venus, the unfinished science fiction musical written by Merritt and Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket. Also included are four songs culled from various 7-inch singles by The Magnetic Fields; two from The 6ths, Merritt's guest vocalist-laden side project; one from an audio book; one from the Oh, Merge compilation; and one track from a rare K Records cassette-only release. Among the tracks on Obscurities is The Song from Venus' "Forever and a Day," a solo-acoustic ukulele-based love song. Also included is "The Sun
and the Sea and the Sky," a previously unreleased 69 Love Songs outtake.

PANDA BEAR-Tomboy CD (Paw Tracks-$12.99)
Both as a member of Animal Collective and as the solo artist Panda Bear, Noah Lennox spent the aughts helping redefine the aesthetics and methodology of experimental and independent music. With work ranging from splayed but lyrical noise, florid acoustic arrangements, and guitar-centric psychedelia, he and his bandmates have covered a vast musical territory that blurs the line between pop and experimentalism. But while Panda Bear and Animal Collective have garnered acclaim with each successive sonic venture, their music really started to take hold when they began working with electronics. In 2007, Lennox released the milestone Person Pitch, a mélange of loopy samples, ethereal textures, and dubby echoes all bound together by his soulful tenor. Hailed by many as an instant classic, the album's influence was almost immediately recognizable. He continued work with Animal Collective, releasing another landmark album Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2009. While the interval since Per
son Pitch has seen plenty of work from the Animal Collective camp, Panda Bear activity has been rare. He has toured sparingly, done intermittent remix work, and appeared on a few peers' releases while rumors circulated about his next full-length, Tomboy. The second half of 2010 saw the record's first offerings: a string of 7"s containing tracks from the album, each released on a different label. The singles have revealed Person Pitch's palette, while helping Lennox gauge his progress and focus on individual songs. Recorded at his studio in Lisbon, Person Pitch sees Lennox stepping away from the sample-based parameters of his previous record and incorporating more guitar and synthesizer. Still prevalent, though, is the interest in texture that made Person Pitch such a dense record; crashing waves and cheering crowds bounce against the gurgling arpeggios and give the tracks an immense sense of space. Soaked in reverb and punctuated with inflections of delay, the album's drums reveal a dub influence which gives them a visceral punch that lingers after each hit. Lennox's lofty, self-harmonizing vocals smooth out the songs, and Sonic Boom's mixing gives the work a large dynamic range. With Person Pitch, Lennox has created a more plaintive atmosphere, but in accordance with the conflicting image of its title, the highs of the album balance out its lows. The record, massive in its span of emotion, genre, and sound, is the welcome return of one of the most prolific and consistent audio pioneers in recent memory.

REAL ESTATE-Days CD (Domino-$12.99)
New Jersey's Real Estate release their new album, entitled Days on Domino. Recorded with Kevin McMahon in Upstate New York through the late winter/spring of 2011, Days is a gorgeous suite of timelessly melodic, achingly melancholy pop songs and a delightfully confident follow-up to 2009's exceptionally well-received eponymous debut. Comprised of nine new recordings and a revisit of last year's enduringly wonderful "Out Of Tune" standalone single, that appeared as a now outof- print 7" on True Panther, Days is the next step in the career of a uniquely close songwriting collective that feel more important with their every release.

ULRICH SCHNAUSS-Stars CD (Domino-$6.99)
Ulrich Schnauss returns after last year's acclaimed third album, Goodbye, with this Stars EP, highlighting the standout track with a new edit, remixes, and a new version of "Look At The Sky". The MAPS remix takes "Stars" to a new level of hyperactive electronic dream pop, while the Mahogany remix is a dense and spacey turn on the track with layers of added textures.

SURFER BLOOD-Tarot Classics EP CD (Kanine-$5.99)
Surfer Blood are back after a hectic year of nonstop touring with Interpol, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, The Drums, and The Pixies. While on tour they managed to squeeze a bit of studio time in to give us four new songs that are destined to become huge pop classics. Fans have already been singing along to "I'm Not Ready" and will be super excited to hear the three other new songs on record; "Reprise", "Drinking Problem", and "Miranda". Any Weezer fan will put these songs on repeat for years to come. Yes they are that catchy. The CD includes the four new tracks plus two remixes; the first from Connor (The Drums) and Peggy (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) and the second by Ryan (Speculator).

VOIVOD-Warriors of Ice CD (Sonic Unyon-$12.99)
The past few years have seen Canadian metal legends Voivod respectfully get their due. After a successful run in 2003 and 2004, the band went on indefinite hiatus. Along the way, offers started coming in for the band to reform and play live shows again. It was something they were unsure of at first, originally agreeing only to do two festival shows in 2008, first in Quebec as part of HEAVY MTL and then later that summer in Calgary's Monsters of Rock Fest. In 2009, Voivod embarked on their largest European tour in more than a decade. The group played at ever major summer festival in Europe, including Germany's Wacken Open Air and Norway's Hole In The Sky, and were invited out by Phil Anselmo as special guests of Down for their Canadian national tour. The band was back and touring in a big way, with new guitarist Dan 'Chewy' Mongrain (Martyr, Gorguts) filling in for the deceased Piggy and making the other original members of the band excited to be playing these classic Voivod s
ongs once again. Late in 2009, Voivod released the live Tatsumaki DVD, filmed the previous fall when the band toured Japan for the first time ever. In order to celebrate its release, the band did a sold out hometown show at Montreal, Quebec's Club Soda. It was their first headlining show in the city of Montreal in more than ten years and it was celebrated in grand style. The show was recorded for posterity and is now being released as the fifteen-track Warriors Of Ice, the first official Voivod live album to feature original band members Denis 'Snake' Belanger on vocals and bassist Jean-Yves 'Blacky' Theriault. Warriors Of Ice highlights the classic period of the original Voidvod line-up and also offers a few new songs too. Containing songs that span from 1984's War And Pain right up to 1991's Angel Rat, two songs from the 2009 album Infini are also included mid set too. The album has all of the band's signature songs, from early classics "Voivod" and "Nuclear War" to "Tribal Convictions" and "Astronomy Domine". Warriors Of Ice is an absolute must for diehard fans of the band and a great starting point for the uninitiated too.

WILD FLAG-s/t CD (Merge-$13.99)
Wild Flag is a Portland, Oregon- and Washington, DC-based quartet consisting of Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timony, and Janet Weiss. The members of Wild Flag have played in numerous and notable bands including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi, The Minders, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and others. In April of 2011, they went to Sacramento, California, where they recorded their self-titled album with engineer Chris Woodhouse at the Hangar. All tracks were recorded live except for the vocals.
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE-Fall be Kind EP 12" (Domino-$10.99)
To close out an incredible 2009 for Animal Collective that saw the release of their most critically and commercially successful album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, comes the Fall Be Kind EP. The EP features 5 brand new studio tracks that are every bit as lush and beautiful as those found on Merriweather. The year of Animal Collective continues.
ARCHERS OF LOAF-Icky Mettle LP (Merge-$17.99)
Ltd ed blue vinyl! Singer/guitarist Eric Bachmann, guitarist Eric Johnson, bassist Matt Gentling, and drummer Mark Price formed Archers of Loaf in Chapel Hill, NC in 1991. Icky Mettle was the first of four studio albums for the band that seemed to personify what SPIN Magazine deemed "a tremendously optimistic time in underground music, that 15-minute period in the early 1990s when it looked like indie rock really might take over the world." Re-mastered by Bob Weston and featuring new liner notes by Robert Christgau, Icky Mettle will come with bonus material including the entire Archers of Loaf vs. The Greatest of All Time EP as well as singles and b-sides from the Icky Mettle era.
BRIGHT EYES-The People's Key LP (Saddle Creek-$16.99)
The People's Key - Bright Eyes' seventh studio album - is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2007's acclaimed Cassadaga. Since 2006 the once revolving cast of Bright Eyes players has settled around permanent members Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, with additional musicians joining them in the studio and on tour. Fully realized and bursting with charisma, The People's Key is an assured and accomplished album, artfully arranged and filled with the engaging and mesmeric songwriting for which Oberst is renowned.

GANGLIANS-Still Living 2xLP (Lefse-$11.99)
Sacramento's Ganglians return after a relatively quiet two years since their dual album dropping in 2009. The aptly titled Still Living hits the streets August 23rd stateside via Lefse, and August 29th. Ringing in at just under an hour, the double LP stays true to their psychedelic roots established on their self-title debut and immediate follow-up Monster Head Room (both via Woodsist), they step it up a notch both stylistically and sonically by enlisting the help of producer Robby Moncrieff (who also played a crucial role in the shaping of The Dirty Projectors Bitte Orca).
MAGNETIC FIELDS-Holiday 180g LP (Merge-$17.99)
Stephin Merritt has claimed that each of the first four Magnetic Fields albums has a specific and unique musical style. It is telling that Holiday shares its name with Madonna's first major hit single, because the musical style on display here is early-'80s-style synth-dance-pop. Of course, in 1994, at the pinnacle of the post-grunge "alternative" era, few musics could have been more resolutely unfashionable. There's no doubt that the ever-contrary Merritt had this in mind all along. In keeping with the escapist title and lighthearted music, Merritt's lyrics only occasionally-and then only lightly-touch upon his usual world-weary cynicism, as on the mournful "Deep Sea Diving Suit." Merritt pursues a more romantic path for most Holiday, crooning the swooning "Take Ecstasy With Me" and "Strange Powers" with an uncharacteristic lightness of spirit. Chances are that it is all deeply ironic and bitter, but at least on the surface, Holiday is sheer delight.
MOUNTAIN GOATS-All Eternals Deck 180g LP (Merge-$19.99)
"The songs cluster around themes of hidden things and the dread that hidden things inspire," says singer/songwriter John Darnielle, "but also the excitement, the attraction, the magnetic draw that scary unknown hidden things exert." The title refers to an apocryphal tarot deck. The band approached recording sessions for All Eternals Deck as commando raids on multiple studios with several producers. "We wanted to see how disparate seasons and moods and locations and producers would play out in the songs," explains Darnielle.
PEACHES-The Teaches of Peaches LP (XL-$12.99)
Long overdue pressing on vinyl! Eagerly anticipated full-length (pun intended) debut from the vulgar Canadian temptress signed to Berlin's Kitty-Yo label, in collaboration with the equally lewd Chilly Gonzales. "The Teaches Of Peaches" has been described as sounding like a cross between Penthouse Forum and Charles Manson, in addition to winning raves in publications from the UK's Wire to Rolling Stone ("surreally funny, nasty and funky...Trent Reznor, Courtney Love and Foxy Brown should all be very, very afraid"). 11 sexy tracks like "Cum Undun," "Diddle My Skittle," and "Lovertits."

RIDE-Nowhere 180g LP (Rhino-$16.99)
Oxfordshire quartet Ride quickly rose to prominence in 1989, driven by the chart success of its first three EPs, the intensity of its live shows, and a hypnotic and moody sound that presaged alt-rock's ascendance. In October 1990, the band released its first full album Nowhere, a tour de force of intertwining guitars, intimate but otherworldly vocals, and open-ended lyrics. Two decades later, the album still resonates and remains one of the era's high-water marks.

RZA-Afro Samurai Resurrection: The Soundtrack 2xLP (Wu Music-$13.99)
The first release on the newly formed Wu Music Group label, run by The RZA and Mitchell Divine Diggs, Afro Samurai Resurrection is the soundtrack to the second season of Spike TV's critically-lauded animated television show and DVD featuring the voice of Samuel L Jackson. The score, produced entirely by the Wu Tang Clan's The RZA, features some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including Ghostface Killah, The RZA/Bobby Digital, Kool G Rap, Rah Digga, Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest, and special guest vocals by Sly Stone!
The re-issue includes an essay by Superchunk's Jon Wurster and previously unavailable downloadable bonus tracks. Allmusic.com calls Foolish "a dark masterpiece that contrasts the band's signature high-energy power punk attack…with far more somber, orchestrated approach."
