ELECTRIC POP GROUP-Seconds CD (matinee-$11.99)
Sensational sophomore album from Swedish pop heroes The Electric Pop Group! Following the success of the band’s self-released debut in 2006 and the very well received ‘Sunrise’ EP for Matinée in 2008, the band is back with ten magnificent new recordings that solidify their status as heir apparent to the pop throne once held by Matinée favorites Harper Lee and Sarah Records legends Brighter.
The new album ‘Seconds’ is a study in multilayered, shimmering pop featuring jangling electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and prominent keyboards plus rich bursts of tambourine, strings and other nice instrumentation. Among the album’s highlights, lead track ‘Not By Another’ is a melodic love song with chiming guitars, while ‘Out Of Sight’ mixes keyboards and guitars in an infectious pop hit with fantastic vocals and a soaring chorus.
One of the newest songs on the album, ‘The Way It Used To Do’ is catchy, continental pop with keyboards, jangling guitars, and an addictive chorus that recalls early Acid House Kings. Meanwhile, the band demonstrates it can also deliver modern shoegaze classics with ‘The Best of Times’ showcasing a muti-layered, hazy melancholy with hypnotic percussion.
The album also includes a new recording of ‘My Only Inspiration’, an Electric Pop Group favorite that first appeared on the ‘Matinée Hit Parade’ compilation in 2007, while ‘Into Thin Air’ features more chiming guitars and melodies-a-plenty and ‘We Never Made Up Our Minds’ is an especially beautiful, orchestral number.
An outstanding new entry to the Matinée discography, ‘Seconds’ is glistening jangle pop genius perfect for fans of Brighter, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Field Mice or Harper Lee.

NORTHERN PORTRAIT-Criminal Art Lovers CD (Matinee-$11.99)
Highly anticipated debut album from distinguished Danish band Northern Portrait! Following the very well received ‘Fallen Aristocracy’ and ‘Napoleon Sweetheart’ EPs in 2008, the band spent most of 2009 refining its live set with shows in the UK, Denmark, Germany and USA including performances at the prestigious San Francisco Popfest and Indietracks Festival. These shows also provided an opportunity to preview some of the songs that comprise ‘Criminal Art Lovers’ to favorable response. The resulting ten track album is a triumph for the band that should help solidify their status as one of indiepop’s most loved new bands.
Lead track ‘The Münchhausen in Me’ starts things off in decidedly jangling fashion with 12-string guitars plus autoharp and glockenspiel adding a special touch to the sound. Navigating between truth and semi-truth can be a difficult thing—sometimes fainting might be the only way out. ‘When Goodness Falls’ is an incredibly catchy song about people who are scared to remain true to themselves, and what a wonderful feeling it is to go against their will and completely, intentionally disappoint them. Musically bright, the song is the natural heir to the Smiths classic ‘This Charming Man’.
Third track ‘Crazy’ is the only previously released song on the album, although this is a slightly different mix than the one contained on the debut single. The mix of acoustic and electric Rickenbackers jangle in all the right places and the vocals suit the music perfectly. A song that has been around since the very first days of Northern Portrait, it is a modern pop classic that has been incredibly well received for good reason.
‘The Operation Worked But The Patient Died’ is the sound of Northern Portrait trying to write a British Sea Power song. With a touch of The La's and Sleeper-esque guitars, the song adds a dose of essential drama to the album. Meanwhile, superb title track ‘Criminal Art Lovers’ is a song about beatniks on picnics, busy tourists, and the comfy life…or perhaps just a not-so-good day at the office. With nice bursts of percussion, the song builds to an extraordinarily melodic ending that will have you reaching straight for the repeat button.
Side two begins with lush guitar track ‘Life Returns To Normal.’ Lyrically the song draws upon a poem about Volvo Estate cars, perhaps providing the line “my estate will take you anywhere” a clever double meaning. In any event, the song is another classic that will have you dancing by the end. This will serve you well as the album continues with ‘Murder Weapon’ keeping things sonically upbeat, even if the song is inspired by an article in British Vogue about women's sophisticated cruelty towards one other when it comes to fashion and style.
‘What Happens Next?’ is an up-tempo and energetic song about the collision of people with completely different agendas. It is one of the earliest Northern Portrait songs, initially recorded with the two tracks that would go on to serve as lead tracks for the band’s initial EPs. Returning to the same rhythm as 'When Goodness Falls', the song is a favorite of the Northern Portrait live repertoire.
With its slow build-up and rich sound, ‘That's When My Headaches Begin’ has a certain widescreen feel to it that takes the listener somewhere beyond the other tunes found on the album. Musically inspired by early Suede, the lyrics return to the theme from the Napoleon Sweetheart EP track 'In An Empty Hotel'. Ending the record on a positive note, ‘New Favourite Moment’ is a catchy, Rickenbacker dance track with an instrumental chorus, so people won’t have to learn any lyrics and can focus on twisting their bodies instead! Just try to resist…
Building on the amazing promise demonstrated by its two EPs, Northern Portrait have delivered the consummate debut album as ‘Criminal Art Lovers’ is the first certified album of the year contender for 2010.

PALE SUNDAY-Shooting Star EP CD (Matinee-$6.99)
Fantastic new single from adored Brazilian indiepop heroes Pale Sunday! The band debuted on Matinée in 2003 with the incredibly popular single ‘A Weekend with Jane’ and made loads of new friends with their 2005 album ‘Summertime?’ The first new recordings from the band in over four years, the exclusive new ‘Shooting Star’ EP proves the band still has the gift of writing modern indiepop classics with superb melodies and sing-along choruses.
The title track is an infectious pop hit with jangling guitars, an especially strong melody and nice harmonies. It’s a catchy burst of summertime any time of the year. ‘Are You Scared To Get Happy?’ proves the band has more than a few shoegaze records in their record collection, layering in fuzzy Teenage Fanclub-esque guitar parts and building to a multilayered orchestral ending with strings and more harmonies. ‘Before I Found You’ is shimmering pop at its best with more jangling guitar goodness, perfect melodies, handclaps, and tambourines, while ‘Unknown Half’ mixes multiple guitars with keyboards and other nice instrumentation to conclude the EP.
With four instantly memorable songs, ‘Shooting Star’ is a dazzling new release for Matinée and a very welcome return for Pale Sunday! Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket.

SPC ECO-SPC ECO 3-D (Japanese Version) CD (Quince-$13.99)
Dean Garcia (Curve) returns with SPC ECO, a nu-gaze outfit whose singer is none other than Dean’s daughter Rose Berlin. “SPC ECO 3-D” is their first album and features Rose’s angelic vocals, heavy bass grooves, twinkling keyboards, guitar noise, and British styled electro beats. Joey Levenson (So Young) provides guitar fx, and the resulting amalgam is a colorful and shimmering shoegaze music of sugary pop goodness. The Japanese edition of the album includes three bonus tracks: two remixes plus “Silver Clouds,” an exclusive track featuring Andy Bell (Ride/Oasis).

** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

ALBUM LEAF-A Chorus of Storytellers CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
A Chorus of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio just outside of Seattle. It was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson. Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album Into the Blue Again was recorded. There is, however, one fundamental difference between this and every other album The Album Leaf has ever recorded. For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is their best record yet.

BEACH HOUSE-Teen Dream CD+DVD (Sub Pop-$14.99)
Recorded in upstate New York, in a converted church called Dreamland with producer/engineer Chris Coady (who has worked with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead, and a bunch of others) Teen Dream is the third album from the Baltimore-based duo Beach House, and their Sub Pop debut. The new album gives voice to a full universe of unbridled imagination, and the manifestation of Teen Dream has been a welcomed and all-consuming obsession for Beach House the past 9-12 months. Both the CD and LP formats of Teen Dream will arrive packaged with a companion DVD featuring a video for each song on the album, each by a different director.

BRIM LISKI-s/t CD (Latenight Weeknight-$7.99)
This is Brim Liski. Happy depression. Electronic doom painted over with shimmering vocal layers and symphonic guitar tones. Dark, limitless night music perfect for driving down an endless moon drenched highway. Comprised of various underground producers in the US and The Netherlands, the project started in late 2008 and slowly but surely became an organic musical hydra. The debut release finds itself spanning eras of dark musical passages, polyrhythmic dance beats and deep, moving basslines all in which are inspired by the recent death of love, while also influenced by the blinding light of new beginnings.

MAÑANA-Interruptions CD (Quince-$13.99)
With 'Interruptions', Swiss 5-piece Mañana take us on an eclectic journey through their very own universe, thriving on contrasts and experiments. Their powerful, stirring and epic soundscapes can occasionally be referenced to influences like Mew and Sigur Ros. The driving drumbeats serve as a solid basis on which the keyboards and guitars can develop their unique spaces and the freedom to spin out of control at the right moment. And in the middle of this is Manuel Bürkli's powerful yet fragile voice as the focal point of their music. Produced by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83, Bjork).
"Mañana's music does a lot to you. It triggers things in your head and deep inside, in your heart. 'Make A Tiger' is outstanding proof of that — a song that sends you on a far-away trip, yet never leaves you alone. This touches me, and there's no higher compliment I could pay to music." - Markus Kavka, VJ and Producer, MTV Networks Germany

MIXTAPES & CELLMATES-Rox CD (Quince-$13.99)
Stockholm combo Mixtapes & Cellmates return with “Rox,” their highly anticipated second album. Previous albums and EPs were compared with The Radio Dept and Postal Service. The band is now a 5 piece with a new drummer and three lead singers. While the rock elements of guitar feedback, up-down rhythms, and judicious keyboard usage hint at the influence of Primal Scream’s “Give Out But Don’t Give Up”, the group’s distinct melodies and fantastic song writing are intact and better than ever. “Rox” was engineered by Johan Gustafsson (Last Days of April) and recorded at Studio Grondahl. The Japanese edition of Rox features two exclusive bonus tracks: “Summer” and “Apoidea.”

RETRIBUTION GOSPEL CHOIR-2 CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
Retribution Gospel Choir is a rock trio founded in 2007. The group features Alan Sparhawk on guitar and vocals, Steve Garrington on bass and Eric Pollard on drums and vocals. Alan also fronts the band Low with his wife, Mimi Parker, and Steve also plays bass in Low. 2 is Retribution Gospel Choir's 2nd full-length and Sub Pop debut! Eric Swanson recorded these performances at Sacred Heart Studio in Duluth, Minnesota, and Matt Beckley mixed the recordings at Faux Rock in Sherman Oaks, California.

VARIOUS ARTISTS-The Matinee Grand Prix CD ($Matinee-$11.99)
Brilliant new collection of songs from Matinée’s truly international coterie of popstars. The disc kicks off with a firm favorite from Denmark’s Northern Portrait entitled ‘Stirling Moss’ which establishes a car racing theme rather nicely. Scottish popkids Strawberry Whiplash answer the challenge with new smash ‘Boy In The Bubble Car,’ while Australian legends The Lucksmiths deliver their swansong recording with the predictably stunning ‘Get-to-bed Birds.’
Sweden’s The Electric Pop Group is represented with perhaps their strongest song to date ‘Believers,’ while Clay Hips—American expats living in Germany and Ireland—don’t disappoint channeling their inner Pet Shop Boys with ‘Disappointed.’ The album’s centerpoint sees the return of England’s mighty Tender Trap after four years with the new classic ‘Danger Overboard,’ and Australia has its second contender with the very welcome return of Simpático and new favorite ‘Australian Idle.’
Finland’s Cats on Fire begin the year with a fantastic new song called ‘The Hague,’ while Scotland is back in fine form with Bubblegum Lemonade and ‘Cuts Like A Dream.’ Finally, American hipsters Math and Physics Club break a two-year silence with a great new song called ‘I Keep To Myself,’ and Australia’s The Guild League soundtrack the final lap of the compilation with the lovely ‘Bookmark.’
Demonstrating the continuing strength of the label’s roster, this timeless collection is a vital release for the Matinée faithful and a fantastic introduction to some of the best indie bands of today.

DAVID BOWIE-Hunky Dory 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$19.99)
Hunky Dory finds Bowie camping it up outrageously through a mixture of cabaret piano, coquettish lyrics and soaring vocals. "After the freakish hard rock of The Man Who Sold the World, David Bowie returned to singer/songwriter territory on Hunky Dory. Not only did the album boast more folky songs ("Song for Bob Dylan," "The Bewlay Brothers"), but he again flirted with Anthony Newley-esque dancehall music ("Kooks," "Fill Your Heart"), seemingly leaving heavy metal behind. As a result, Hunky Dory is a kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, tied together only by Bowie's sense of vision: a sweeping, cinematic mélange of high and low art, ambiguous sexuality, kitsch, and class. Mick Ronson's guitar is pushed to the back, leaving Rick Wakeman's cabaret piano to dominate the sound of the album. The subdued support accentuates the depth of Bowie's material, whether it's the revamped Tin Pan Alley of "Changes," the Neil Young homage "Quicksand," the soaring "Life on Mars?," the rolling, v
aguely homosexual anthem "Oh! You Pretty Things," or the dark acoustic rocker "Andy Warhol." On the surface, such a wide range of styles and sounds would make an album incoherent, but Bowie's improved songwriting and determined sense of style instead made Hunky Dory a touchstone for reinterpreting pop's traditions into fresh, postmodern pop music." - AMG

DAVID BOWIE-Ziggy Stardust 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$19.99)
"Borrowing heavily from Marc Bolan's glam rock and the future shock of A Clockwork Orange, David Bowie reached back to the heavy rock of The Man Who Sold the World for The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie's fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread. Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam. Mick Ronson plays with a maverick flair that invigorates rockers like "Suffragette City," "Moonage Daydream," and "Hang Onto Yourself," while "Lady Stardust," "Five Years," and "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" have a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard
of in rock & roll. And that self-conscious sense of theater is part of the reason why Ziggy Stardust sounds so foreign. Bowie succeeds not in spite of his pretensions but because of them, and Ziggy Stardust — familiar in structure, but alien in performance — is the first time his vision and execution met in such a grand, sweeping fashion." - AMG

NIRVANA-Bleach DELUXE 2xLP (Sub Pop-$26.99)
Marking the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana's debut album, Sub Pop will re-issue the Platinum Certified Bleach on November 3, 2009. This expanded CD/double-LP will include a never-before-released live performance, and special packaging.
Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack Endino at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988 and January 1989, Bleach was released in June of '89 and remains unequivocally/unsurprisingly Sub Pop's very favorite Nirvana full-length. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide success of their 1991 sophomore effort, Nevermind. Subsequently Bleach went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This 20th Anniversary Edition has been re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a session overseen by producer Jack Endino.
This edition will include an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features performances of "Love Buzz," "About a Girl" and a cover of The Vaselines' song "Molly's Lips" and has been re-mixed from the original tapes by Endino (complete track listing below). A 52-page CD /16-page LP booklet which includes candid photos of the band not previously released to the public will also be included in this deluxe edition.
A notice to Vinyl-buyers: this is a very weighty collection of records and images and nice packaging. ADDITIONAL SHIPPING RATES WILL APPLY!!
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE-Campfire Songs CD (Paw Tracks-$12.99)
Paw Tracks is proud to present the reissue of Animal Collective's 2003 album Campfire Songs. Since the CD's original issue on catsup plate recently went out of print it is our intention to simply keep the cd in print for as long as possible. An idea originally thought up by Dave Portner and Noah Lennox while in college, Campfire Songs is not a record of songs sung around a campfire but a record that hints at songs emerging from the fire itself: "We wanted to give the music the feeling and atmosphere of the outdoors and the warmth of a fire, so people could bring it indoors."

BRILLIANT COLORS-Introducing CD (Slumberland-$12.99)
Singer / guitarist Jess Scott started Brilliant Colors in early 2007, and she's been mighty busy since then. After a steady stream of line-up changes, Scott has finally settled on a permanent line-up with the addition of East Coast transplants Diane Anastasio and Michelle Hill (a veteran of a number of Bay Area underground punk outfits, as well as touring guitarist for legendary UK punk / dub group The Slits!), in the meantime sharing bills with fellow Bay Area acts Nodzzz, Grass Widow, and Ty Segall and opening for the likes of The Urinals and The Homosexuals. Following up two sold-out singles (on Make a Mess and Captured Tracks) and mounting fervor from all corners of the pop underground blog-o-world, Brilliant Colors' debut album is as an undeniable contender for best pop record of 2009. Introducing, recorded in Portland, Oregon by Mississippi Records' Alex Yusimov, marks a great leap forward for Brilliant Colors. The band has honed their songwriting to a fine edge, delive
ring ten tracks of sharp, subtly catchy indie pop that finds them more assuredly rounding out the corners of their DIY-punk-meets-Shop Assistants, '78-'86 pop collision. Opener "I Searched," a fully formed pop classic, drifts through the speakers on the back a wistful, echoey vocal, while "Absolutely Anything" picks up the pace with a buzzing guitar attack and a chorus hook that would make Joey Ramone proud. The trio is at their best on "Over There" and "Yell in the Air," tunes emblematic of the perfect middle ground Scott has struck between the crunch and drive of punk and the spiky DIY melodicism of early Rough Trade and Flying Nun bands. Introducing is a sharp debut album packed with taut guitar buzz and dreamy melodies, neatly expanding on the promise of those in-demand 7-inch singles. Clocking in at barely twenty-four minutes, its focus and concision perfectly encapsulate where pop should be in 2009. Side-stepping all the indie pigeonholes, Brilliant Colors have produced a scrappy gem of a record.

BILL FAY-Still Some Light 2xCD (Coptic Cat-$15.99)
Singer/songwriter Bill Fay released two brilliant but poor-selling albums between 1967 and 1971 before disappearing from the public eye. He spent much of the following decade writing, rehearsing, and occasionally performing--all with no contract or record company support. In recent years, reissues of his now-sought-after original albums along with a pair of releases containing previously unreleased material have renewed interest in the English artist. Coptic Cat is pleased to announce the release of Fay's long-awaited next collection of old and new music.
Still Some Light consists of 43 songs on two CD with a total playing time of over two hours. It comes in a full-color six-panel digipak with a 24-page booklet of extensive notes, archival photos, and handwritten lyrics to all the tracks. The cover was painted by the musician's brother John Fay.
The first CD, titled Piano, Guitar, Bass & Drums, consists of studio recordings, sourced from archival tapes, with Ray Russell on guitar, Alan Rushton on drums and Daryl Runswick on bass. The 1970 tracks are prior to the recording of the Time of the Last Persecution album and contain alternative versions of songs on that album, two tracks from Fay's self-titled debut album, and previously unreleased songs. The 1971 material is also previously unreleased. The second CD, Still Some Light, is a home-recorded studio album from 2009.

FOUR TET-There Is Love In You CD (Domino-$13.99)
There Is Love In You is Four Tet's first full-length album in over four years and is his fifth album to date.

PANTS YELL-Received Pronunciation CD (Slumberland-$12.99)
Life is not a series of epic epiphanies and seismic milestones, but a succession of quiet weeks and months, interrupted at rare intervals--if one is lucky--by fleeting moments of significance or grace: a new crush, a break-up, the discovery of a particularly good book or song or film, an intense conversation with a friend that you know you won't forget. Some of the best pop bands of the past several decades have made it their mission to evoke, in their words and in their music, the understated beauty of everyday living. Think of the Go-Betweens, who found boundless romantic possibility in going for a walk or spending the night in; or Belle and Sebastian's hushed remembrances of little failures and lessons learned and sympathetic portraits of young misfits struggling to make sense of the world. Pants Yell!, despite their misleadingly emphatic (and eternally mysterious) name, belong to this crucial lineage. Together since 2003, when they formed at a Boston art school, the trio
is the vehicle for singer-guitarist Andrew Churchman's modestly proportioned but perfectly realized songs. Abetted by co-founding bassist Sterling Bryant and drummer Casey Keenan (who joined in 2007), his two- and three-minute marvels draw power from restraint and poetry from plainspoken observation--in short, they are greater than the sum of their parts. Not for nothing did Churchman name the band's last album Alison Statton, in honor of the former Young Marble Giants / Weekend singer, who understood better than most that a whisper, dispensed properly, is always more affecting than a scream. Alison Statton, the third Pants Yell! album, brought the band unprecedented critical and popular success internationally. And now they've come to rest at their spiritual home, Slumberland Records, with its remarkable follow-up, Received Pronunciation. In nine songs and 26 minutes, and without ever deploying a distortion pedal, they make a greater emotional impact than an album twice as long and at double the volume. Which isn't to say the album lacks for visceral sonic thrills--hear "Someone Loves You" build to an ecstatic climax that perfectly justifies the song's title, or the elegant guitar solo that launches "Cold Hands" skyward. This is pop that doesn't need to raise its voice or shake its fist; it wins over with its mind and its heart.

SPOON-Transference CD (Merge-$14.99)
Since the band's 1994 inception in Austin TX, Spoon has amassed one of the most loyal and steadily growing followings in indie rock, with classic albums like Telephono (1996), A Series of Sneaks (1998) Girls Can Tell (2001), Kill The Moonlight (2002) and Gimme Fiction (2005) each doubling their predecessors' sales. THE NEW YORKER has called Spoon "timeless," INTERVIEW has described the band as "irresistible," and PLAYBOY has hailed its songs' "timeless beauty." On January 19, Transference will give Spoon fans new and old alike eleven more reasons to celebrate.
SPOON-Transference LP (Merge-$18.99)

THE BATS-Don't You Rise 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
The Bats are legends of New Zealand music, standing tall alongside contemporaries The Clean and The Chills as linchpins of the Flying Nun label and the Dunedin / Christchurch scene. Over the course of 25 years, seven albums, and four world tours, the original line-up of Robert Scott, Malcolm Grant, Paul Kean, and Kaye Woodward remains intact and still creates vital, pastoral pop gems. Combining Scott's mantric-like guitar pick and strum, bouncing bass with a twist from Kean, melodic hooks from Woodward on guitar, and Grant's snappy beats, the combination of musical ingredients works perfectly--effortlessly. The band's reputation is sterling; based on legendary albums like Daddy's Highway and Silverbeet and their energetic live shows, The Bats have an enthusiastic worldwide fanbase who treasure the band's continued excellence. Don't You Rise gathers up four tunes from 1998 and 2003, helping to complete the discographical picture leading up to their most recent album, The Guilt
y Office. With the electric violin of Alastair Galbraith (who last featured on The Bats' Law of Things), "That's How You'll Find Me" has a mesmerizing folk-pop groove and would fit in perfectly on any classic Bats album. "You Don't Belong" is a moody gem, while the country-inflected strum of "Don't You Rise" is a live favorite. "Face Inside the Sun" rounds out the record in fine form, a mid-tempo sing-along that sounds straight off Daddy's Highway. A pretty special EP then, and ample evidence that 25 years after forming, The Bats own their legendary status.

BEACHNIKS-s/t 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
Four songs about the summer delivered to you in the early winter. Fuzzy bubblegum 4-track pop. Features members of CRYSTAL STILTS and GERMAN MEASLES. Includes a poster sleeve. "The Worst Dressed Band in New York."

CHRISTMAS ISLAND-Blackout Summer LP (In the Red-$12.99)
There are actually three Christmas Islands: one off the coast of Australia, one in the Pacific Ocean (which also goes by the name Kiritimati), and one whose incredible self-titled debut album is on In The Red. Hailing from sunny San Diego, California, Christmas Island plays music that on the surface is happy and poppy. There is a dark undercurrent to their brand of lo-fi pop punk--it is joyous and almost twee while secretly depressed and deeply disturbed. Citing Tronics, Urinals, Television Personalities, The Clean, Versatile Newts, and The Fall as influences, Christmas Island is Beach Boys-style, sunny Southern Californian pop by way of the late-'70s / early-'80s UK DIY scene. "... the band has a subtle charm that mixes sunny California harmonies with a nod toward the garage in the vein of Kiwi poppers like The Clean." --Raven Sings the Blues

GIRLS AT DAWN-s/t 12" (Captured Tracks-$12.99)
Right on the the heels of their debut 7-inch on HoZac comes this four-song 12-inch EP. Drawing from post-punk, psychedelic and ‘60s pop influences, these three girls from Brooklyn make haunting melodies bridged with there/not-there ghostly arrangements.

MAZZY STAR-She Hangs Brightly LP (Plain-$17.99)
MAZZY STAR, essentially the duo of DAVID ROBACK (RAIN PARADE) and HOPE SANDOVAL, formed in 1989 out of the ashes of OPAL, Roback’s previous band with former Dream Syndicate member Kendra Smith. She Hangs Brightly, their debut album was originally released on Rough Trade in 1990. A dreamy, psychedelic affair every bit as good as their sophomore breakout LP.

THEE OH SEES-The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In LP (In the Red-$12.99)
Thee Oh Sees (OCS) began as songwriter / singer / guitarist John Dwyer's outlet for the experimental instrumentals he was producing in his home studio. Dwyer, who hails from Providence, RI, has been active on the San Francisco indie scene since the late '90s, working with The Coachwhips, Hospitals, Pink & Brown, Yikes, Dig That Body Up It's Alive, and Swords & Sandals, among others. He formed OCS (which is an acronym for Orinoka Crash Suite, Orange County Sound, or whatever Dwyer decided on any given day) to release a string of soundscapes and moody pieces that were decidedly lower key than his previous projects. In time, OCS morphed into an actual band, working under a flurry of names (most notably the Oh Sees or the Ohsees) and eventually settling on Thee Oh Sees. Sounding a bit like The Mamas & The Papas run through a seriously bent garage blender, this line-up features Dwyer on guitar and vocals, Brigid Dawson on vocals and tambourine, Petey Dammit on bass, and Mike Shoun
on drums. The band signed with the German Tomlab label and released The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In in 2008. This record marked the first recorded appearance of the newly harder rocking version of the band and was immediately met with an enthusiastic response by fans and rock scribes. It went out of print after its initial pressing sold out quickly, and In The Red is pleased to announce the re-release of this incredible album on vinyl. Music like this is best enjoyed when spun on a turntable, and the gorgeous cover art can only be properly appreciated at 12 inches by 12 inches. "A simulacrum of 1960s Bay Area psychedelics without the marathon solos, in its own way, Master's Bedroom can be as hypnotic and mesmeric as any drone album."

PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART-Higher Than The Stars REMIX VERSION 12" (Slumberland-$7.99)
This 12-inch features the incredible Balearic dub-disco remix from ace UK producers Saint Etienne, plus an exclusive Skanfrom Mix. Spacey yet totally danceable, it's certain to burn up the dancefloor.

THE ROPERS-I Don't Mind 7" (Slumberland-$4.99)
It's ridiculous that this rare, OOP single is still available from a certain distributor, but it's true! Two incredible noisepop songs from 1994, including their alltime best track (IMO), It's So Strange, on the flip.

FRANKIE ROSE-Thee Only One 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
As a founding member, songwriter, instrumentalist, and vocalist in Vivian Girls and drummer and occasional vocalist in Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose has been an integral part of two of the most highly acclaimed and influential groups to come out of Brooklyn's still-vital music scene in the past several years. Her solo project not only reflects the earmarks of both those groups, but also reveals her as a fully-formed artist in her own right. Ms. Rose's music is haunted by the ghosts of '60s girl group Brill Building and '80s and '90s noise-pop in equal measure. It's a spooky, lovely sound--her ethereal yet affectation-free voice swirling in a sea of church-like harmonies over a bed of tambourines, bells, and propulsive drumming. Recalling in spirit groups like The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine, Rose's music is timeless and immediate, both deeply personal and completely universal. Pitchfork cited "Where Do You Run To?" as one of the best songs of 2008, and after much anticipa
tion Slumberland presents Rose's debut single. Recorded at Marlborough Farms Studio with Gary Olson, Kyle Forrester, and Crystal Stilts' J.B. Townsend, "Thee Only One" is a perfect slice of surf-tinged noise-pop. Laden with rumbling reverb and tangy guitar twang, it's an ideal tune with which to wrap up another (almost) endless summer. On the flip, "Hollow Life" is a more subdued affair--spectral psychedelia that resembles nothing so much as Opal's Kendra Smith at her most haunting. Building to a mesmerizing crescendo, "Hollow Life" is a sublime complement to "Thee Only One," rounding out this single in fine fashion.

SARANDON / THE MEMBRANES - Spike Milligan's Tape Recorder 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
Brown, Crayola A trio of badass post-everythings who make one hell of a beautiful racket Slumberland Records presents Spike Milligan's Tape Recorder to those who want to feel the history then and the history now. Keep beating the pulp from the pop-rock schlock hog. This single supports and is supported by the publication of Death to Trad Rock by The Membranes' John Robb: 900 pages that cover nearly 50 bands in that defiant, discordant DIY underground of bands, fanzines, and venues that sustained a remarkable and highly original scene of bands--perhaps the last stand of DIY culture in the UK.

GREGORY WEBSTER-Promised Land 7" (Slumberland-$3.99)
Gregory Webster has recorded for pretty impressive scene-setting labels over the past 25 years, including seminal UK indie labels Creation, Sarah Records, and The Subway Organisation, plus indie-pop bastions from Australia to the USA. Now Slumberland Records is pleased to join in the fun. Webster first emerged during the mid-'80s UK C86 scene with Razorcuts, whose sound hit somewhere between the 12-string heavy folk-rock of mid-'60s L.A. and the unique pop sensibilities of UK post-punk. The Carousel soon followed, a gorgeously out-of-time psych-folk duo formed with Talulah Gosh founding member Elizabeth Price. After the acoustic simplicity of his 1995 debut solo LP, My Wicked Wicked Ways, Webster put together perhaps his most prolific (and noisy) outfit, Sportique, with ex-TV Personality Mark Flunder and Heavenly's Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey. His debut Slumberland single is his first solo recording for almost 15 years. On "Promised Land," Webster returns to matters of the
heart, utilizing the acoustic-based sound familiar to those who have seen his regular PopFest performances in recent years. Although never foolish enough to adopt the mannerisms of another culture as his own, Webster's love of American folk and country greats such as Willie Nelson and Hank Williams clearly shines through. In fact, the B-side is a radically different interpretation of Williams' lesser-known classic "Won't You Sometimes Think of Me?" Simplicity rules throughout, complementing the naked honestly of the songwriting. Webster's signature 12-string sound is augmented by haunting harmonium accompaniment from The Birthday Girl (Vatican Cellars) and beautifully uplifting vocal flourishes provided by Pam Perry of Slumberland's own legendary Black Tambourine. As Webster dreams of love away from the glare of city lights, take a ride out to the country with him on this beautifully packaged return to vinyl.
HOLOPAW-Oh Glory, Oh Wilderness LP (Obscurist Press-$9.99)
Unlike lesser bands, John writes lyrics and then gets the band to create sublime music around them. This particular incarnation of Holopaw roars a little more, making the vocals all the sweeter. 10 songs here of singular, stunning lyricism that transcend the ghettoes of indie-rock, Americana and/or gay singer-songwriter. Would you believe the record was previously titled All Holes. No Glory? Holopaw musically plays with tensions: lulling strings are undercut by anxious guitars, lilting "la's" turn sinister and demanding. In "Little Stallion with a Glass Jaw" horn blasts announce a charge that is quickly clipped to a hush. The bounce of "P-a-l-o-m-i-n-e" stumbles towards chaos at the bridge only to be righted by a whimsical Bay City Rollers-esque chant. The last song on the record, "The Hobbyist and the Conductor (Avalanche)" begins with bright, carillon chimes that stand in stark contrast to the thunderous din that ends the song like a slack jawed finale to a fireworks displ
ay. Triumphant "la's" punch through the smoke and ash to have the final say.
NERVOUS SYSTEMS-Needs Medicines LP (Obscurist Press-$9.99)
Recorded by Jeremy Scott (MAHOGANY) at Civil Defense (Vivian Girls, etc). Also features Josh Ney (BRITTLE STARS) on drums. "Maybe we're all convinced that our friends write superior songs. But Nervous Systems do. If Boyracer really is retiring, then I'm glad that Nervous Systems are still pounding out short, biting sets of noisy pop songs. Sound Effect for Deafening Silence has made me cry on more than one occasion. And Joe's lyrics are proof-positive that our state-university English degrees are not entirely wasted. Making pop a threat again."
Now in on CD for the first time! AVEY TARE is DAVID PORTNER of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE and KRIA BREKKAN is KRISTIN ANNA VALTYSDOTTIR formerly of MUM. Now married, the duo release their debut album together--a motley collection of fun and somber songs, some instrumental, textured and trancelike. Other songs are lyrically based, calmer and more introspective, and sound like direct transmissions from within. Eight songs in all.

THE CLEAN-Mister Pop CD (merge-$13.99)
In 1978, The Clean were the seeds of New Zealand punk. They carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in, and their influence resonated not only in NZ but around the world. This summer's Mister Pop sees The Clean continue the great pop pastiche. Circus ragas ("Moonjumper"), hazy sunset anthems ("In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul"), and the loose Dada approach to wordsmithery continue alongside "proper" lyrical forays and a few Autobahn-referential instro moments to boot("Tensile").
NEKO CASE-Middle Cyclone 180g 2xLP (Anti-$22.99)
FOUR TET-Love Cry 12" (Domino-$9.99)
Four Tet returns with the 'Love Cry' 12", the first single since his 2008 EP "Ringer". 'Love Cry' is an epic song of propulsive drums and hypnotic melodies that highlights Four Tet's turn towards dance music that the 'Ringer'EP (2008), foreshadowed. On the flip side is a new non-album b-side titled 'Our Bells'.

PASTELS/TENNISCOATS-Two Sunsets LP (Domino-$18.99)
The Pastels are from Glasgow and Tenniscoats from Tokyo. They have different sounds, but something in common too. The collaboration that eventually became the Two Sunsets album arose from a suggestion by Tenniscoats that some studio time be booked while they were in Glasgow, just to see what happens, and maybe to try to find out what it is that they have in common. It's melodic, optimistic and brilliant.
"Cousins" b|w "California English Part Two." Like the first album, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and unique musical vision that sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound. Primarily recorded in New York with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend. "Cousins" is the first single from their new album.
BAD APPLES-The Autumn People CD (Seksound-$11.99)
"Seksound is proud to announce that second album "The Autumn People" by Estonian indiepop group Bad Apples is released. Bad Apples started in 2003 as a bedroom project, young guy Henrik Esse was one mastermind behind it. Those recordings were heard by people behind local indielabel Seksound. Thanks to their support first album was recorded and a small group of musicians gathered around Henrik and Bad Apples. Supporting female vocalist is Helina Risti, on other instruments you'll find Rein Fuks (Pia Fraus, Popidiot), Tõnis Kenkmaa (Pia Fraus) and Rivo Järvsoo (Picnic). Their first album "When Colours Become Day And Night" was released in 2006. New album is less punkier, it's like baroque pop on indie world, getting influences from 60s music, from proper pop music to west coast psychedelia. Vivid examples would include pop giants Serge Gainsbourg, The Carpenters, Juan Garcia Esquivel. Henrik said that he wants to make estrada music (I can imagine it's huge musical area from Bur
t Bacharach classics to great soviet pop), but he doesn't have big orchestra. I can hear that idea materialize in Bad Apples way."
CHAPTERHOUSE-Whirlpool: The Original Recordings CD (Space Age-$14.99)
Hailing from Reading in the late 80's/early 90's, Chapterhouse were leaders in the British Shoegazing movement. Rehearsing for well over a year before committing anything to demo for record companies, Chapterhouse quickly reached the top of their game with their peak arguably being a performance following Nirvana at the 1991 Reading Festival.Releases from Chapterhouse have been very hard to track down, due to being out-of-print for many years. Thankfully Space Age Recordings is about to rectify this. A re-issue of the original Whirlpool recordings from VHF Studios Rugby, Sawmills Cornwall, Stoneroom Studios London and Refuge in Reading. Featuring three extra tracks, including the never before released 'Thrasher' and longer/alternate mixes of 'Something More', 'Rain' and 'Guilt'.Tracklist:1. Breather 2. Pearl 3. Autosleeper 4. Treasure 5. Falling Down 6. April 7. Guilt 8. If You Want Me 9.. Something More (ambient version) 10. Rain (alternative version) 11. Thrasher 12. Guilt
(long version)

CLIENTELE-Bonfires on the Heath CD (Merge-$14.99)
A return to the group's roots; the dreamlike suburban landscapes 1st encountered in the early singles, their trippy sense of menace stronger now. Back in London, they've drawn on older traditions of English folk, which exist here side by side w/ the band's more familiar bossa & pop elements.

JAMES ORR COMPLEX-Chori’s Bundle CD (Ba Da Bing-$6.99)
A new album from Glasgow's CHRIS MACK under the JAMES ORR COMPLEX moniker. Known for his rock work in the band ESKA (Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai was once a member), Mack moves from the power of volume to the force of melody, as he brings his rock skills to the realm of folk. A collection of beautiful, skillfully finger-picked compositions that shoot off into tangents at some points, circle melodic phrases at others, and remain highly original at all times.

VARIOUS ARTISTS-In the Beginning There Was Rhythm CD (Soul Jazz-$17.99)
Warehouse find! One copy to be had… “This record features the groups that grew out of Punk and embraced dance music. These groups reflected the changing face of a British multi-cultural society in the aftermath of Punk, taking on new musical influences such as Black American dance music, Reggae and Electronic music. A Certain Ratio were one of the first groups to be signed to Factory Records in Manchester. Whilst New Order and later The Happy Mondays came to be the most successful Manchester bands associated with bringing dance music into their sound, it is their original label-mates, A Certain Ratio, who were in fact the first band to make the connection between punk and US Black dance music. It was A Certain Ratio who went to New York to record their first album that managed to mix a sparse Manchester bleakness in their sound along with US funk/dance elements. Finishing their album early they decided to offer their remaining studio time to a band who had recently opened for
them in New York called ESG. This became the first ESG album for 99 Records in New York. A Certain Ratio¹s early cover of the US group Banbarra's "Shack Up" features the amazing funk drumming of new recruit Donald Johnson. The Banbarra track had been popular on the Northern Soul circuit and whilst ACR made music that expressed the depressed, decaying Sound of an industrial city in decline they were also true to their other Nothern roots which in Manchester, Leeds, Wigan and other Northern towns had been for many years US Soul, Funk and R¹n¹B. ACR would carry these two sensibilities throughout their career going on to embrace many other styles of dance music along the way including Disco, Reggae, Jazz and Brazilian music. "Knife Slits Water" is a classic extended disco mix that managed to bring the punk 7" into the world of the dance 12". Sheffield became a focal point for DIY- electronic groups at the end of the 70s. The two most successful were Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League. Whilst Cabaret Voltaire stuck to their roots, signing to, and staying on, a fledgling new label, Rough Trade Records, The Human League would go on to international stardom as their experimental late-70s electronic music turned into 80s synth-pop. At the beginning, both these groups were interested in electronic music and how this music could be created within a punk ethos. Consequently, the all-electronic "Being Boiled" was created on a two-track tape recorder in mono! The Pop Group were the forerunners of what came to be known as The Bristol Sound. Other groups that have come out of this chain include Rip, Rig and Panic, Maximum Joy, Massive Attack and Portishead. The Pop Group mixed Punk, Funk, Disco and Reggae influences into a sound that many future bands would emulate. The group was produced by Denis Bovell, founding member of Matumbi, and one of punks favourite producers- He would also produce The Slits as well as continuing to work with people such as Linton Kwesi Johnson. When the Pop Group split up, two groups were formed Mark Stewart and The Mafia, and Rip,Rig and Panic which also featured a young Neneh Cherry. Out of Leeds came The Gang of Four. Again mixing Punk with dance and a large dose of Marxist philosophy, The Gang of Four were initially released on the Edinburgh based independent label, Fast (as were The Human League). As we can see, Punk music affected every city in England. Other scenes that emerged from this could be found in Liverpool (Teardrop Explodes, Wah! Heat, Echo and The Bunnymen) and of course Coventry where The Specials and Two-Tone began mixing up Ska and Punk to enormous success. London had got off to an early start with experimental-sound artists, This Heat. An early inspiration to many of the groups here, Camberwell¹s finest "24 Track Loop" is an incredible pre-curser to electronic, industrial music which sounds like an early version of Jungle. The concept of Industrial music would be taken a stage further by Throbbing Gristle who released music on their own Industrial Music label with the intent of pushing the boundary between music and noise. 23 Skidoo¹s interests stretched as far as Kung Fu, Gamelan Music, Language and Semiotics. Apart from this, they also managed to combine their musical influences like no-one else. On their classic album, "Seven Songs", Dance music, Experimental noise and Gamelan music combine in equal measures! "Vegas El Bandito" is taken from this record. "Coup" is one of the definitive dance records from this period. The line-up of the group features bass-player Sketch (who was also playing with Lynx) and original Jamaican Reggae hornsman Vin Gordon. Finally, The Slits were possibly the closest of these groups to The Sex Pistols. Although they did not record until 1978 they were actually part of the first wave of Punk groups (and were part of the inner circle of friends ofThe Sex Pistols). "In The Beginning, There Was Rhythm" (produced by Dennis Bovell) was indeed a prophesy of the music to follow Punk, where Punk would meet Funk, Reggae and Disco. The CD/record comes with many original photos and booklet talking about the time.”
ALOG/ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB – Split Series Vol 20 12” (FatCat-$12.99)
Another high quality, album-length release, the twentieth 12" in our acclaimed Split Series features Alog and Astral Social Club, two artists who've carved out very singular, purposeful paths for themselves. Here, both roll out their markedly different, yet somehow complimentary material, the unifying element being a heavily skewed outsider take on dancefloor electronica / techno.
BONNY PRINCE BILLY & THE PICKET LINE-Funtown Comedown LP (Sea Note-$16.99)
"In the wilds of greater outer Louisville Kentucky, there is a place called Funtown. You won't find it on any map, and you might just lose yourself in the woods out there trying to pin it down to the ground as well. Yet, Funtown is a place, as much as it is a place of mind. It was in this place, in a clearing and on the shores of a pond, that Bonny 'Prince' Billy and The Picket Line combined forces to play his music and their music and other people's music for a community of people to hear and watch and swing and step to. And they did! The songs of Bonny and The Picket Line and the others that they play are music for an afternoon, an evening, a night. Songs to echo off your head when you wake up the next morning -- but songs for a finite place, like Funtown; a place that you must leave behind you, and leave in your mind. So they left, and months went by, and a few more opportunities to play as one presented themselves. Including this one! Live in front of friends and family i
s the way of Funtown, so more and the same were invited when B'P'B and the TPL laid this one down for posterity. It was as fun as it sounds and more, in ways which have mostly been channeled down to the two sides of a groove, and presented to you here, wrapped twice in full-color sleeves. The Picket Line spark with their youth the picking traditions that some call bluegrass and some call music. They are comprised of Oscar Lee Riley Parsons, guitar and singing; Bob Dixon, electric guitar; Jonathan Kempf, mandolin; Cheyenne Mize, filled and singing; Danny Kiely, double bass; and of course, the Mayor of Funtown himself, Bradley Reinstedler, on banjo."
NICK DRAKE-Five Leaves Left 180g LP (Simply Vinyl-$23.99)
Back in stock!! “It's little wonder why Drake felt frustrated at the lack of commercial success his music initially gathered, considering the help he had on his debut record. Besides fine production from Joe Boyd and assistance from folks like Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson and his unrelated bass counterpart from Pentangle, Danny Thompson, Drake also recruited school friend Robert Kirby to create most of the just-right string and wind arrangements. His own performance itself steered a careful balance between too-easy accessibility and maudlin self-reflection, combining the best of both worlds while avoiding the pitfalls on either side. The result was a fantastic debut appearance, and if the cult of Drake consistently reads more into his work than is perhaps deserved, Five Leaves Left is still a most successful effort. Having grown out of the amiable but derivative styles captured on the long-circulating series of bootleg home recordings, Drake assays his tunes with ju
st enough drama — world-weariness in the vocals, carefully paced playing, and more — to make it all work. His lyrics capture a subtle poetry of emotion, as on the pastoral semi-fantasia of "The Thoughts of Mary Jane," which his soft, articulate singing brings even more to the full. Sometimes he projects a little more clearly, as on the astonishing voice-and-strings combination "Way to Blue," while elsewhere he's not so clear, suggesting rather than outlining the mood. Understatement is the key to his songs and performances' general success, which makes the combination of his vocals and Rocky Dzidzornu's congas on "Three Hours" and the lovely "'Cello Song," to name two instances, so effective. Danny Thompson is the most regular side performer on the album, his bass work providing subtle heft while never standing in the way of the song — kudos well deserved for Boyd's production as well.” — Ned Raggett, AMG
BERT JANSCH-L.A. Turnaround LP+CD (Drag City-$16.99)
"Drag City is 'chuffed' to announce the limited-edition vinyl repressings of the three albums Bert Jansch recorded for The Famous Charisma Label in the 1970s: L.A. Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon and A Rare Conundrum, all of which have been out of print for decades and are among the most sought-after Jansch albums among fans and collectors. For these new releases, Bert Jansch handpicked the bonus material, much of which is previously unreleased. In some cases this material has been unheard by anyone in thirty years, including Bert himself. Bert Jansch was signed to Charisma by label boss Tony Stratton Smith in 1973, the year that Pentangle decided to go their separate ways. L.A. Turnaround appeared in September 1974 to great acclaim, hailed in the press as 'not far off from being the perfect album.' It was produced by former Monkee Mike Nesmith at Stratton Smith's house in the country in Crowbridge, Sussex, and in Los Angeles, and features not only Nesmith on guitar but a
lso pedal steel guitar maestro Red Rhodes, then in Nesmith's group. Rhodes' presence gives the album a unique sound enhancing Bert Jansch's own songwriting and performance skills with his haunting steel guitar. Other tracks on the album were completed by a group including Klaus Voorman on bass and, on certain songs, slide guitarist Jesse Ed Davis and fiddle player Byron Berline, giving this album an authentic L.A. '70s vibe, despite its UK origins." CD contains four bonus tracks and a short film.

BERT JANSCH-Santa Barbara Honeymoon LP+CD (Drag City-$16.99)
"Santa Barbara Honeymoon was recorded in America over a two-month period the following year and is a further departure for Bert Jansch, mixing his familiar style with a definitive L.A. over-the-top production sound, featuring backing singers and session players including horns, steel drums and a Dixieland band. This wasn't what most people wanted or expected from a Bert Jansch album, but time has kindly tucked the outrages of three decades ago beneath the intrigue of the sound, accenting some of Jansch's best songs of the period." Includes lyric insert; CD contains six bonus tracks.

BERT JANSCH-A Rare Conundrum LP+CD (Drag City-$16.99)
"A Rare Conundrum was recorded in a more familiar style in the UK during 1976 and released by Charisma in May 1977. The majority of the album features Bert with a group he'd put together consisting of Rod Clements on bass, Pick Withers on drums and Mike Piggott on violin. By the time the album was released the group had split after Clements returned to a re-formed Lindisfarne and Withers joined Dire Straits. A Rare Conundrum marked a return to a simpler style: it includes delicate instrumentals, Irish traditional songs, a couple of slow blues and some of Bert's most overlooked songs which look back to his childhood ('One To A Hundred') and his early days on the folk scene in Edinburgh ('Three Chord Trick' and 'Three Dreamers')." CD contains three bonus tracks.

LANDING-You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever Vol 5 7” (Geographic North-$7.99)
5th in the YCHYLF 7 inch series. Limited to 300 on white vinyl. 2 new songs from the dream-pop/space-gaze masters!! "Following Daylight Master" unfurls into a swarm of droney bass loops w/ bursts of spacey guitar drifts soaring in the distance, flashes of light against the layers of deep murmur. "Into the Hall," w/ its steady percussion, sounds a bit like an extension of "Gravitational 2" (off of Sphere); except this time w/ the addition of Aaron's mellow vocals & a bobbing guitar line.

ROBERTO CARLOS LANGE-Library Catalog Music Series: Music for Memory LP (Asthmatic Kitty-$11.99)
Roberto Carlos Lange (Helado Negro, Savath & Savalas) offers up his contribution to the Library Catalog Music Series. Music for Memory is like one giant crossfade going from one idea to the next in long rhythmic patterns. Its broken tape delays and found reel to reel tapes comprise the beats and the long drone music made from orchestrations that became re-assembled from short ideas to long ones.

LIGHTNING BOLT-Earthly Delights LP (Load-$12.99)
After scrapping two entire full lengths, LB is finally ready to unleash new music to the masses. Taking the lessons of extreme metal, blood-brother marrying them to expansive & explosive song form and applying it to Olympic training methods - "Earthly Delights" uses electric stimulus to shock smile technology to worldwide domes. This is what 2000 years of evolution & the invention of electric instrumentation introduced into the tank of hook force can do to you. This record has the sound of a ten piece band with a much tighter pay scale, matched with the sonics of military cartoons. Swank artwork by Brian Chippendale.

YUUKI MATTHEWS-Library Catalog Music Series: Music for Savage Tropical Imagery LP (Asthmatic Kitty-$11.99)
Yuuki Matthews is a Seattle-based freelance musician and owner of 2 cats. Originally from Hollywood (Burbank), California, Yuuki moved to the Northwest with his mother and brother in the mid-nineties. He recorded the songs that make up "Music for Savage Tropical Imagery" at home between tours, odd jobs, and major milestone events. With this record, Yuuki sought to expand upon the nostalgia of subtle sound degradation.

OKKERVIL RIVER-Black Sheep Boy: Definitive Edition 2xLP (Jagjaguwar-$16.99)
Black Sheep Boy (Definitive Edition) is NOW AVAILABLE AS DOUBLE VINYL for the first time, to be released on 12/08/2009. This is the definitive double-album set which brings together Okkervil River's ground-breaking Black Sheep Boy project in its entirety - including the original album, the 7-song Black Sheep Boy Appendix EP, and the song "The Next Four Months" (originally released on the "For Real" CD single). (The CD version of this definitive set also includes the "For Real" video as well as a new video of a magical alternate slower take of "No Key, No Plan".) Enjoy this panoramic perspective of a modern masterpiece and one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the new millennium. Black Sheep Boy is Okkervil River's most ambitious and cinematic record to date, a love story and adult fable carved in lacerating rock and roll, desolate late-night country weepers, and a few shining moments of sheer, shameless pop.

MUM-Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know 2xLP (Euphono-$16.99)
Two years (almost to the day) after their previous release, Iceland's eccentric pop maestros mum have returned with their fifth studio album, Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know. Sing Along... recalls sand running through fingers or ripples on a lake; it's an ode to the light in its different shapes, from a fading bulb to the blinding sun. Alternately sunny and melancholy, Sing Along... flows like the tides: now ebullient, now brooding, cacophony resolving into tight melody.

LINDA PERHACS-Parallelograms LP (Guerssen-$23.99)
Back in stock on more affordable single-disc format. "Linda's sole album, originally released on Kapp in 1970, has gained its deserved fame and reputation in the folk-psych scene in the last years after the NY label Wild Places released it on CD format some few years ago. We could talk about Joni Mitchell and the likes if we had to compare with anything, but fans of folk music in all its variety must be delighted with this amazing album, a truly hippie psychedelic folk masterpiece and without any doubt one of the top albums of the genre. This beauty was reissued on vinyl a few years ago in Korea as well, in a 500 pieces limited pressing that sold out instantly...and we believe this one MUST be available unlimited so here we come with a gorgeous, tremendous sounding reissue of the legendary album plus 2 bonus tracks (exactly like the Korean release), a poster and an insert."

PRIMAL SCREAM/RTX-Split 12” (White Noise-$14.99)
On this limited 12" from Los Angeles label White Noise, Primal Scream hooked up with Jennifer Herrema's RTX, taking a side each, having been tourmates during winter 2008. Bobby Gillespie and co. belt out a cover of The Troggs' 'I Want You' in typically blusterous fashion while the mighty Trux cover Spirit's 'Nature's Way' with a weird funk-folk slink, inviting sax and vocoder into the mix. Ace.

SIC ALPS/MAGIK MARKERS-Split Tour 12” (Yik Yak-$13.99)
45rpm split 12", six songs, from their December 2009 tour. Git it!!
*** VISUAL STIMULATION ***

VERNON CHATMAN-Final Flesh DVD (Drag City-$15.99)
Comes with a special secret bonus!! "NEW from Vernon Chatman, a co-creator of some of this millennium's most outre cable television programming (Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel and -- yeah -- Doggy Fizzle Televizzle - !) is a DVD destined to change the way we look at entertainment, pornography and probably the legal system. Final Flesh is a feature film produced in four parts: the script written by Vernon was divided up and submitted to four unique film production companies that work exclusively in the field of customized adult content. The companies' shared charter is to produce a film that explores the writer's chosen fetish -- and with this in mind, Vernon wrote with demented determination, in order to push the definition of fetish into the realm of the cosmically absurd. Then he sat back to see what his charges would deliver. The resulting film is an epic narrative for our time. Final Flesh is a surreal, apocalyptic My Dinner With Andre -- in other words, existenti
al, sublime and ridiculous, featuring unmistakeably porno production values and shudderingly unseasoned porno actors and actresses -- but no actual sex! Chatman's sexworker hirelings applied themselves earnestly to his cerebral text (never suspecting the prank nature of the project). Working in complete isolation from each other, they made Final Flesh a cinematic 'exquisite corpse' whose fervid rottings comprise an insurgency in the field of...well, all the fields that involve people looking at other people for entertainment. Final Flesh isn't just a meta-comedic concept whose time has come -- it 's also a hot evening's entertainment filled with religion, sex, philosophy, fashion, culture and 'reality' (with all the pathos that implies), plus some really amazing dialogue. Few will sit the fence on this. Few should. Final Flesh is a confrontation and a contradiction that deserves its day in (kangaroo) court. Fortunately, it 's the way of the world that the curious and easily influenced will be drawn into the web that is Final Flesh, whether they like it or not -- thus dissolving its concepts of 'avant-garde porn' and 'comedy' into the unsuspecting mainstream, where their questionable merits will have the desired evolutionary impact. If your spirit is willing -- the Flesh will freak you!" Running time: 71 min.; NTSC all-region format.

And a lot more re-stocks on the website, plus some handfuls of used goodies are always being added!
KATSEN-It Hertz CD (Shelflife-$12.99)
For fans of: Section 25, Ladytron, Mint Royal, My Favorite, Annie, Compute. Katsen are the electronic pop duo from Brighton, England consisting of Donna Grimaldi and Chris Blackburn. Donna and Chris met back in 2001 at a craft fair, when Donna’s brilliant mixtapes, with their bold collage covers, caught Chris’ attention and fired his imagination. For the first time, after playing two-fingered synth in various bands, he’d met someone with the tastes and talents to compliment his own. Together with a collection of toy Casios and old monophonic synths (some held together by gaffer tape), they began crafting what would become their 12 track debut album “It Hertz!”
“We’d get together to listen to records and after exhausting Donna’s extensive and very cool collection, we’d get out my synths and toy keyboards and create our own sound long into the happy night.” Interrupted only by Donna running away one summer to join the circus (true story), and Chris teaching acting to ballet dancers, Katsen songs continued to form, taking cues from 50s chic, 70s krautrock and the sharper edges of 80s synthpop. Following on from cameo appearances in compilations such as “Bot POP” (Happy Robots) and “Electronically Yours Vol.1” (Undo/ EMI), “It Hertz!” is the full length offspring of Katsen’s eight-year partnership; the love of the square wave and all things Casio. Stand out tracks include the pop hit “Where Nobody Can Find Us,” “Chequered Flag,” “Let’s Build A City,” and “Constellation”. The album also includes covers of The Passions and Black Box Recorder.

THE LUCY SHOW-Undone CD (Words-on-Musuc-$11.99)
Signposts: The Cure, Jesus & March Chain, The Beatles. Nearly 25 years since its release, ...undone, the 1985 debut by the London quartet The Lucy Show, remains an essential work in the British post-punk oeuvre. Produced by Steve Lovell (Blur, James) and Steve Power (Robbie Williams, Blur), ...undone injects howling guitars and psychedelic flourishes into bittersweet pop songs with hook-laden choruses.
Available now for the first time on CD, when ...undone was originally released, The Lucy Show was filling to capacity London venues like the Marquee Club and the Lyceum Ballroom. Across the Atlantic, the record landed at #1 on the U.S. college radio charts, with a tour across America soon to follow.
Throughout ...undone guitars ring and beautiful chaos takes root, with songs alternately injecting hints of Beatles imagery both melodic ("Come Back to the Living," "Remain") and experimental ("Undone," "Dream Days") onto post-punk soundscapes.
But the importance of ...undone extends well beyond its post-punk canvas, which, on songs like "Dream Days," conjures up Psychocandy with both noise and melody to spare. As Big Takeover Editor Jack Rabid writes, ...undone is a "Touchstone bridging the early Magazine/Bunnymen/Sound/Comsat Angels U.K. post-punk pinnacle and the House of Love and Stones Roses emergence, sparking the shoegaze-dreampop explosion."
** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

THE MAYFAIR SET - Young One CD (Captured Tracks / Woodsist - $12.99)
Brand new CD version of the great Mayfair Set EP and 7" combined to make a nice long EP or short LP styled CD. Dum Dum Girls and Blank Dogs together.

TUNE-YARDS - Bird Brains CD (4AD-$11.99)
BiRd-BrAiNs is the debut record from tUnE-yArDs, the singular musical project of New England native Merrill Garbus. Recording herself using a digital voice recorder and produced using shareware mixing software, Garbus was described by Stereogum as “a self-contained Sublime Frequencies compilation, jumping between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and lo-fi folk”, infusing the worldly sonic palette of M.I.A. or post-punk pioneers The Raincoats. Merrill comments on BiRd-BrAiNs: “It is a patchwork of sound snippets, of history in a present tense. It is a composer’s commitment to the preservation of stories, however small and unassuming.”

** YE OLDE TYME VINYL **

AFTERNOON NAPS-Parade LP (Happy Happy Birthday To Me-$14.99)
With nothing more than just 3 minutes, and a "verse-chorus-versechorus-end!" motto, Afternoon Naps are a vibrant indiepop band from Cleveland, Ohio. Like Brian Wilson if re-imagined by Felt or the Primitives, these teenage symphonies are relics from the past; brought back to save the 21st century from complete and utter pop boredom. Influenced by the C86 scene, 60's bubblegum, and sunshine pop act Yellow Balloon, songwriter/guitarist Tom Dechristofaro and keyboardist/arranger Leia Hohenfeld have been happily playing together since 2006. Having no expectations and "Walk away Renee" constantly spinning on the stereo, the duo recruited some close friends to help bring the band to life. A consistently enthusiastic live show that's the equivalent of a 20 minute sugar rush, has helped establish them as one of indiepop's brightest young acts. Their 2007 debut "Sunbeamed", a loving homage to sand and summer, was self-released and modestly well received. The 8 songs clocking in at jus
t a hair under 22 minutes doesn't mean they're short on ideas, just really good at editing! Many swell things have been said about "Sunbeamed"..."It may very well be my favorite album of 2007"(fab UK blog Indie-Mp3) and "the best American group that doesn't use distortion" (some random guy in Sweden...ha!). A quick selling Cloudberry Records single was to follow, along with some nicely played shows at notable festivals like Athens Popfest, NYC Popfest, and the first ever of the popular UK night "Twee as Fuck" to be held in the united states. Now singing their hearts out to wider audiences, Afternoon Naps signed onto Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records, the cozy Athens, GA label, to release their next batch of fun. "Parade", a new record that's full of ever present now-ness, day-glo reverb, and energetic hooks for kids, and also adult kids, is due just in time for the summer of 2009. Highlights include the "all-things-Cleveland-by-way-of-Morrissey" bombast of "Plum City Fight Song", the Orange Juice future-disco of "Mitten Fingers", and "The Day We Started" featuring Leia's mix of Motown's heartbroken soul and a flirtatious Amelia Fletcher. Do you wanna smile? Sulk over lost love? Cringe at pictures of yourself from school years past when you wore that ONE sweater and the boy in front of you never spoke a word? Well they can't help you there, but one listen to these sparkling tunes and you just might cheer up and be ready to take on the impending dullness that is the near future! Afternoon Naps are a band to listen to if you are doing some or all of the following things: petting animals, hammocking, beach combing, dancing, looking out a window. -*Yodar Critch*,2009

THE BITTERS - "East" b/w "Foreign Knives" 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
The Bitters is Ben a.k.a. Young Guv from Fucked Up and Erin. These two tracks are less obvious than the four song 12" from this past summer but no less great.

BUNNYGRUNT-Matt Harnish & Other Delights LP (Happy Happy Birthday To Me-$14.99)
Bursting into existence during the brief-lived Great Indie Pop Scare of the mid-1990's, Bunnygrunt garnered an unlikely amount of success for a band that never managed to plan any further ahead than their next tour. Over their initial five year run, the St Louis band toured the entire USA a half-dozen times, released two great albums, a million singles & compilation tracks, and then blew out in a blaze of glory with a whirlwind tour of Japan. After pursuing other interests for a few years, main Grunt-ers Karen Ried & Matt Harnish decided to dust off the Bunnygrunt brand name for another go around. An appearance at the Athens Popfest cemented their return to activity, but also marked a broadening in their sound. While the jangling guitars and harmony-filled choruses of 90's indie pop remain, Bunnygrunt's solid Midwestern Classic Rock upbringing is equally represented, as is their love of 70's Power Pop & 60's Nuggets fuzz. This isn't music for blogs, this is shout along live,
loud, in the joyful moment Rock-n-Roll.

CAMERA OBSCURA-The Blizzard 7" (4AD-$4.99)
In the spirit of the rapidly approaching holiday season Camera Obscura are back with a great new Holiday single. The A-Side is a fantastic rendition of the Harlan Howard song "The Blizzard" and it is backed with the Sleigh bell-riffic "Swans" from "My Maudlin Career." This is a limited edition single.

CHRISTMAS ISLAND - "Nineteen" b/w "Twenty-Nine" 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
San Diego's Christmas Island have just released an excellent debut LP on In The Red that reminds me a lot of Beat Happening in the best possible way. This single is two more great songs along those lines. Great picture sleeve too.

SPECTRALS - "Leave Me Be" b/w "Suit Yourself" 7" (Captured Tracks-$6.99)
A young British man named L. single handedly produced this dreamy, Sonic Flower Groovy fuzz-pop stomper, although it sounds like it could have been recorded at Gold Star in 1965 for release on Creation in 1985. Two tracks, one million hooks.

TUNE-YARDS-Hatari 7" (4AD-$4.99)
"Hatari" from the "BiRd-BrAiNs" full length and the Non album "Hap-B" along with a cool remix of "Hatari". Limited edition.
BELL HORSES-This Loves Last Time CD (Trysquare-$9.99)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! This is one of those albums that you throw on, and at first blush, you think "this sounds pretty good", then the second track comes on, and you think "hmm, this song is even betterthan the last one!" and by the time you are midway through the album, you find yourself staring at the CD player, mouth agape, thinking "how can each song possibly be getting successively better? Can it get any betterthan this track right here?!" A slow-building, gorgeous, dreampop stunner that squeezes you in full-grip by its midway point and won't let go. Guaranteed you will be hitting the repeat button.
Bell Horses is a left-field pop outing from Xian Hawkins & Jenny Owen Youngs. The
8 songs that comprise their debut album work together to create a world of contrasts
both challenging & familiar. Arrangements blend acoustic instruments (guitars, strings, piano, percussion) with synthetic textures and samples while vocals sit up front in the mix, often doubling as instruments themselves. A subtle attention to detail reveals more with each listen. This Loves Last Time is about the infinite and the finite – things that cease to be but linger all the same.
The name Bell Horses is taken from a turn of the century song about horses passing in the night, strung with bells so as not to collide. An apt analogy for the working methods of this group whose members all live in different cities. Various parts of the album were tracked in Brooklyn, Berlin & London with the majority of the music being recorded, arranged & mixed by Xian Hawkins in a converted Victorian Church in Western Massachusetts. This Loves Last Time succeeds as it becomes more than the sum of the individuals involved – all of whom have projects of their own.
Xian Hawkins records as Sybarite - making distinct & lauded electronica for a variety of labels, most notably 4AD, Temporary Residence & Ghostly International. His music has been featured in film & television. Jenny Owen Youngs is a singer songwriter who signed to Nettwerk Records in 2006 and recently released her sophomore record, Transistor Failure, to critical acclaim. Also on the album is Alexander Ericson (Alberta Cross, Stjarna) contributing vocals to three of the tracks - along with Michael Lerner, drummer for NYC band The Antlers (Frenchkiss), & classical string player Eve Boltax. This Loves Last Time was mastered by Denis Blackham (Brian Eno, Cocteau Twins) at Skye Mastering in Scotland. UK artist Rick Myers designed the sleeve - he has done covers for the likes of Doves, Dinosaur Jr. & John Cale, among others. Photographs were taken by California artist Noele Lusano. The album is the first release on the band’s own Trysquare label.

KEITH CANISIUS-Waves CD (Quince-$13.99)
On this totally self produced album, Keith Canisius (Rumskib) takes his romantic ocean dream pop one step further from his previous album Ferris Wheel Makeout (2008), making it sound even more psychedelic and ambient on one side, yet more poppy, melodic and modern on the other. His great sense for creating atmospheres and melodies together with a sharp structural awareness will take you places you've never been before. Yet again Canisius often seeks the explosive moments in his music, but only with an exceptional sense for timing where the listener would least expect it. Listen to the 7 min. dream pop anthem with guest appearance by Isol Misenta (Entre Rios, Alsace Lorraine, Isol/Zypce) and you will know what we're talking about. Canisius's music has an emotional depth and musical vision that seems quite unique which allows him to work with a wide musical pallet without limitation and specific genre loyalty.
Anything can happen and will on a Canisius album, often with a classic sounding underline to it, but always pushing the boundaries and seeking those key moments where thoughts loose their sense of basic control.

DEPRECIATION GUILD-In Her Gentle Jaws LP (Kanine-$16.99)
FINALLY IN STOCK! This is the debut full length on vinyl/digital only. Following their premiere full-length In Her Gentle Jaws, self-released in December ‘07 exclusively as a free download (www.inhergentlejaws.com), the album has already found its way to over 90,000 hard drives. The stir across the internet, as well as in their own backyard, is testament to some breathtaking songwriting and arranging. A musical piece to be heard as a whole saturated in color, and drifting into dream. Limited one time 500 pressing only.

GUITAR-Friends CD (& Records-$17.99)
This is the 6th album by Guitar. This album features the Japanese lyrics by the Japanese vocalist Ayako Akashiba for almost all tracks. Ayako wanted to express her gratitude to everything close to her, to her "friends". The German trackmaker Michael Lückner a.k.a. Digital Jockey made more sensuous backtrack than ever. You can hear a new chemistry between these two talented artists. This is an exclusive release on & records Japan.

** LES COMPACT DISQUES **

ATLAS SOUND-Logos CD (Kranky-$12.99)
The prolific Bradford Cox delivers yet again, with his second solo album under the Atlas Sound moniker. Eleven delectable pop delights served up to tantalize & tickle your taste buds. Guest appearances by Noah Lennox (ANIMAL COLLECTIVE) & Laetitia Sadier (STEREOLAB).

PETER BRODERICK-Falling From Trees CD (Western Vinyl-$9.99)
Peter Broderick's Music for Falling From Trees, is a 29 minute piece, in seven sections, created for a contemporary dance by London's Adrienne Hart. Adrienne told Peter she was looking for a score of piano and strings, so he left the guitar and his voice aside and focused entirely on those two timbres. The dance tells the story of a man in a psychiatric hospital, and his struggle to maintain his identity. Beautifully utilizing piano and strings, the music evokes a melancholic and playful narrative.

GROUPER-Cover the Windows and the Walls CD (Root Strata-$13.99)
1st ever CD version of the LP originally released in 2007. Cyclical vocal vapors & guitar/piano shapes levitate on the surface of hissy atmospherics dense w/ a feedback that conjures up all sorts of latent images from the subtle body/mind. Liz's songs always seem to be perched delicately between layers of blissful fuzz & her stark, gorgeous song craft. For those who missed out on the extremely limited vinyl pressings, here is your chance to hear this gem! Limited to 1000

ROBIN GUTHRIE-Soongs To Help My Children Sleep CD (Darla-$8.99)
Limited to 1000. Digipak. Tracks: 1. Laughter in the Dark 2. Fireflies 3. White Bear in Honolulu 4. Misty

THE LEGENDS-Over and Over CD (Labrador-$12.99)
A brilliantly modern mix of white noise, 60's girls pop, indie & krautrock. Hypnotic washes of distorted synthesizers & sweet bouncy melodies echoes under walls of feedback & crushingly loud shimmering guitars. Pure loveliness!

LIGHTNING BOLT-Earthly Delights CD (Load-$11.99)

ROSE MELBERG-Homemade Ship CD (K-$11.99)
The songs of Rose Melberg belong to her voice; its stark stillness is as hauntingly playful and familiar as the first days of fall. Similar to her work with previous bands Tiger Trap and The Softies, her approach is always tender and hushed. Homemade Ship is a small masterpiece. Melberg uses just a guitar and vocals on Homemade Ship (with occasional harmony vocal and piano work provided by Larissa Loyva of The Choir Practice and P:ano), offering helpful and insightfully delicate lyrics to perfectly ease out of sorrow and into contentment. At the forefront, her voice holds a warmth and generosity that adds strength and hopefulness to her aching lyrics. Set a table for two.

MUM-Sing Along To Songs You Already Know CD (Euphono-$11.99)
Two years (almost to the day) after their previous release, Iceland's eccentric pop maestros mum have returned with their fifth studio album, Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know. Sing Along... recalls sand running through fingers or ripples on a lake; it's an ode to the light in its different shapes, from a fading bulb to the blinding sun. Alternately sunny and melancholy, Sing Along... flows like the tides: now ebullient, now brooding, cacophony resolving into tight melody.

NO AND THE MAYBES-s/t CD (Quince-$13.99)
No and the Maybes are an eclectic three-piece from Copenhagen, Denmark, on a mission to save and reclaim the catchy melody from wedding singers and Eurovision.
This Danish chamber pop ensemble have set their sights on creating vivid, engaging yet easygoing music with an after-kick, taking inspiration from 60s sounds through to more thoughtful 80s New Wave music. No and the Maybes make it their obligation to bring something fresh and exciting to the table, celebrating that little extra something to catch your attention and make you fall in love: surprising hand claps, finger snaps, a choir arrangement or an unexpected instrumentation.
Their DIY principles mean that everything they produce is lovingly stamped with their own unique signature, be it their music and videos. Similarly their live set breaks down the conventional lead singer set-up and gives way to a more democratic use of the stage, the band forming a line with a standing drummer and all members sharing vocal
duties.
No and the Maybes' eponymous debut album was released in Denmark on the reputed A:larm Music label (The Raveonettes, Mew, Band of Horses, The Dø to name but a few) towards the end of last year and led to the band hitting no.1 in the Alternative Radio charts, being nominated at the Danish Music Awards, performing on national television and being lauded across the press and media. And lately their single "Petra Petrified" was selected "Single of the Week" on the BBC. 2009 sees the band bring their warm electro-tinged pop to the Americas for the first time.
"Their sunny vocals lean towards The Magic Numbers, but instrumentally they evoke the early Cure, 1979 XTC and Aztec Camera. They're a winner." -MOJO Magazine, UK

OLA PODRIDA-Belly of the Lion CD (Western Vinyl-$11.99)
Belly of the Lion, is David Wingo's much anticipated sophomore effort under the name Ola Podrida. Chockfull of unsentimental love songs, the album pulses with the burgeoning sexuality borne of feral adolescent summers spent in the sprawling suburbs of the South. It's hard not to be wooed, as the songs gingerly lay to rest the calamities that inevitably befall an adventurous heart.

PIANO MAGIC-Ovations CD (Darla-$12.99)
10th official album by London-based Anglo-French coldwave group, Piano Magic. Features special guests Brendan Perry and Peter Ulrich of Dead Can Dance.
It's difficult to know what propels Piano Magic. Here's a group that despite releasing over 30 records since their debut in 1996 have managed to sidestep anything resembling accolades. Though it was they who coaxed Vashti Bunyan out of a 30 year retirement for their 2001 album, Writers Without Homes, the credit went to the hipper Devendra Banhart and Animal Collective. Further collaborations with the likes of Low and Cornershop were quickly papered over. A beautiful soundtrack for Spanish film director, Bigas Luna, was lost to all but Spain's video stores. Regular tours and festival headlines throughout Italy, France, Germany and Spain may have paid off with a devout Continental following but haven't particularly translated into press or record sales. Records for the likes of 4AD, Morr Music and Darla have anchored them in "cult" status. Even so, after 13 years beneath a cloud of indifference Piano Magic have made some of the most compelling, poetic, dynamic and romantic rec
ords of our time.
Ovations, released October 12th is no exception. Recorded May through August of 2009 by Gareth Parton (The Go-Team, The Breeders, Pete & The Pirates) at his petite La Planque studio and The Fortress in London, Ovations is the Anglo-French group's 10th album proper. Typically for a Piano Magic record it's a restless beast; a record that swings wildly between Marrakesh, Eastern Europe, Sevilla and early 80s Manchester without breaking a sweat. Piano Magic have always worn their influences on their sleeves. The Chameleons, Joy Division and The Cure rub shoulders with Turkish darabuka, hammered dulcimer, viola, cello, flamenco claps. Elsewhere there are cold analogue synths, chiming guitars, mournful piano and industrial percussion.
Piano Magic's fascination with Eastern European percussion is in part much due to one of their biggest influences -- the Melbourne-born though World-wise 4AD Records-signed group, Dead Can Dance. And it's no small coup that Ovations features not only DCD's supreme percussionist/dulcimer, Peter Ulrich but also the voice of principal songwriter, Brendan Perry on two tracks ("You Never Loved This City" and "The Nightmare Goes On"). The reclusive Perry, himself, a very recent convert to Piano Magic's music was only happy to sing with a group that by his own admission, were making "the most beautiful music" he's heard for a long time.
Whether this new album is quickly consigned to a dusty drawer in the museum of musical curios like so many other Piano Magic records is yet to be seen but there's more depth, soul, variety, dynamic, romance, emotion here than many groups manage in their entire careers.

MAX RICHTER-Memoryhouse CD (Fatcat-$11.99)
Originally released in 2002 but long out of print, Max Richter's gorgeous debut album will finally see a much-awaited reissue. Recorded by Richter with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and critically lauded on its original release, Memoryhouse is quite deservedly held very dear to the broad-reaching "post-classical" field. Memoryhouse is bright, sparkling, exhilarating, warming, gripping, heartbreaking, comforting and rousing, and never loses its awe-inspiring sense of identity and imagination. It is enveloping one can get lost in the lovingly-composed intricacies and interaction between instruments or can be a subtle, albeit chill-inducing, soundtrack to the everyday.

SIMON SCOTT-Navigare CD (Miasmah-$14.99)
This is the debut full-length release by the UK's Simon Scott. Scott has had a notable musical past: in the early '90s he was the drummer for the renowned shoegaze band Slowdive. Upon leaving Slowdive, he formed the more electronic-based group Televise. He also set up his own label, Kesh Recordings, and has so far released titles by the likes of Hannu, Sebastian Roux, Aus and Mark Templeton. More recently, Scott has been involved in several diverse projects, including his work as a member of Seavault (with Antony Ryan from Isan), and collaborations with Machinefabriek, Jasper TX and Emmanuele Errante. With Navigare, there are shades of Scott's previous output and musical interests, but as a whole, the album marks a bold new direction. Navigare opens with "Introduction Of Cambridge," a shimmering wall of sound, its ethereal tones and slow-burning drones gradually drawing closer and closer, creating gorgeous uplifting melodies and textures. The processed guitar combined with ge
ntle swathes of interference and underlying rhythms echoes the processes of Chain Reaction's productions as much as it does the screeching, arcing feedback lines of Kevin Shield's guitar work. Navigare shares an affinity with the melodic content of Fennesz's work, the dark beauty of Tim Hecker's sound, and houses elements of the restraint found in Andrew Chalk's drone compositions. What really devastates here is Scott's ability to merge ambient passages with such memorable melodic cycles, taking the simplest of ideas and building on them, generating murky hooks and submerged "riffs." Scott explores textures using a variety of instruments including sitar, violin, cello, and flute, merging them with excerpts from field recordings; it all sounds so effortless. The looping rhythms and slow guitars rise and grow, at times approaching something oppressive; select pieces such as "Flood Inn" house an underlying weight, comparable to Justin K. Broderick's Jesu and Final projects. Perhaps the hazy drums, bass and guitar drift of "The ACC" presents the most recognizable of stylistic qualities from Scott's back catalog; a groove that recalls the Souvlaki-era sound in all its glory, re-imagined in a new, darker and more expansive form. Additionally, a guest appearance from label mate Jasper TX, a vocal contribution from Moskitoo, and a track co-written with Rafael Anton Irisarri, adds even more depth to Scott's already ambitious vision.

SOLAR POWERED PEOPLE-Living Through the Low CD (Quince-$13.99)
Solar Powered People is a four piece rock/shoegaze band from the Central Valley of California. They are poised to launch into a bright future that should eclipse their already well accomplished past. The sound the band produces is enveloping, warm and powerful with just enough grit to leave a few claw marks. Some of the songs cut through the atmosphere with pace and power, while others sweep and swirl, wrapping the listener into a haze of sound. The various levels of volume, pace and space are anchored by two consistent elements. The always-solid rhythm section provided by Coscia and McKinnon give every song a sturdy backbone. Coscia's powerful drumming and McKinnon's tasteful bass lines are the rails on which each song can successfully roll from. The second consistent element is the melodic hooks layered into the guitars. There are no pointless notes in Morris' or Pennington's guitar lines. The weaving of guitar parts gives the listener many layers to uncover while listening
. Solar Powered People has a crafted sound that comes from the vast experience found in each respective member's past. Taking these experiences and combining them with a shared love for such bands as The Cure, Slowdive, Tears For Fears, Failure, and Joy Division to name a few, the members of Solar Powered People feel they have found themselves a musical home. This musical home has been appreciated by many around the world over the last few years. Their second full-length, Living Through the Low, was recorded by Matt McCord, who also worked with Cake, Fleeting Joys, the Deftones and Team Sleep.
"I fell asleep one night with my headphones on listening to "Living Through the Low", and I had slow motion dreams of Alpine avalanches, followed by vintage James Bond high speed chases. This music is awesome…it's good for the imagination." -Jason Lytle of Grandaddy
"love love the new record...there are no accidents i hear- lots of really beautiful stuff on here…" -Jeff Martin of Idaho

SPARKLEHORSE & FENNESZ-In the Fishtank Vilume 15 CD (Fishtank-$10.99)
Just two days in December 2007 were enough to record over 40 minutes of the sublime Fennesz & Sparklehorse combination. Prepared oddities & masses of inspiration make these recordings unique in their style and in this series in particular. Songs & soundscapes of rare beauty with stunning atmospherics, where abstract sounds & well-crafted traditional songstructure meet & where acoustic instruments & electronics create outstanding ambience.

WHITE RAINBOW-New Clouds CD (Kranky-$12.99)
Forkner has turned White Rainbow into an even more spontaneous & open-ended musical project & has shaped this new album into a dense, lengthy exploration of the relationship between hypnotic, circular, fourth-world drum rhythms, acid-boogie guitar & drifting sheets of fuzzy psychedelic drone. The tracks on New Clouds are a tug-of-war between stasis & change, the desire to meld the meditative effects of a near static drone with the uplifting trip of free-flowing compositions. Slowly melting fluorescent sunsets morph into drapes of psychedelic fog, rumbling over cacophonous rhythms.

** YE OLDE TYME VINYL **

-- The following few titles are described in the CD section above --

ATLAS SOUND-Logos LP (Kranky-$11.99)
ROSE MELBERG-Homemade Ship LP (K-$11.99)
WHITE RAINBOW-New Clouds 2xLP (Kranky-$16.99)
AKRON/FAMILY-River 7" (Dead Oceans-$5.99)
"River" is the second single from Akron/Family's 2009 release, Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free. Following the thundering and anthemic "Everyone is Guilty," "River" returns to something they have always been known for: a timeless hook. "River" delivers Ali Farka Toure-like guitar work, but this song is all about the infectious vocal melody. Like the "Everyone is Guilty" 7-inch, "River" features an exclusive non-album b-side, the lovely "Morning on Michigan Avenue (Thinking of Old Friends)." Strictly limited edition, we advise scoring one of these slabs of vinyl now.

ALBERT AYLER-Bells 180g LP (ESP Disk-$21.99)
Remastered one-sided LP on 180 gram clear vinyl with screenprinted logo. Hand-numbered, limited edition of 1000. "Bells is the celebrated set that overjoyed the audience at New York's Town Hall on May 1st, 1965. It's a ferocious, twenty-minute romp containing excellent group improvisation and Ayler's signature military-themed melodies. The performance marks an important shift in Albert's music: towards blurring the lines between composition and improvisation. It is also the debut recording of Charles Tyler. Reissued on 180 gram transparent vinyl with screenprinted Bells logo on the blank side."

DAVID BAZAN-Happy Xmas (War is Over) 7" (Suicide Squeeze-$4.99)
Limited to 1,000 copies! This is the sixth installment of Bazan's Christmas Singles Series for Suicide Squeeze Records. Two new examples of this master songwriter's ruminative, and ultimately, hopefully approach to traditional melody and arrangement. The exclusive adaptations of John Lennon & Yoko Ono's "happy Xmas (War is Over)" and Wayne Coyne's "Say it Isn't Greensleeves (A Change At Christmas)" continue Bazan's Yueltide tradition in a style totally his own.

DOCK BOGGS-Legendary Singer and Banjo Player LP (Smithsonian Folkways-$17.99)
"Originally released in 1964, this is the first of three volumes that Boggs recorded for the Folkways label after being rediscovered by Mike Seeger during the folk revival of the early '60s. Incredible, sparse and haunting country blues featuring only Dock's banjo and voice. Absolutely essential Appalachian folk music lovingly reissued in a perfect replica of the original Folkways jacket and including a reproduction of the original information booklet."

CALIFONE-All My Friends Are Funeral Singers 2xLP (Dead Oceans-$14.99)
In an underground music landscape where 140 characters equals "journalism" and lone MP3s propel bands to momentary internet stardom, bands are here today and gone tomorrow. Califone is a band that defies this blueprint. Their albums are full of layers and textures, offering endless depth, entire universes to lose yourself in and beyond the thick spectrum of sound, they do something even more important: They write great songs. Califone is a band that will stand the test of time. The band is at the peak of its powers on All My Friends Are Funeral Singers, its sixth song based album. The long-awaited follow-up to 2006's acclaimed Roots and Crowns, the album is the strongest collection of songs in a career with no shortage of strength. The subtlety and detail of Califone's previous work is present here the atmospheres are carefully nuanced, the percussion is both rattling and melodic, the melodies are rich and soulful, interspersed throughout softly strummed folk and electrified
blues. All My Friends Are Funeral Singers is a dense collage of sounds, expertly formed into fully realized pop songs. All My Friends Are Funeral Singers is the record that the great Roots and Crowns hinted at. The songwriting is fleshed out, the musical vision is boiling over, the sonic experimentation is indulgent and dense, yet there's a great cohesion, a sense of purpose and a newfound focus to this Califone effort. Never has the band felt so vibrant, so alive, on one of their albums. All My Friends Are Funeral Singers is built for the long haul. CASTANETS-Texas Rose, The Thaw, and The Beasts Castanets LP (Asthmatic Kitty-$12.99)
With Texas Rose, The Thaw, and The Beasts Castanets' Raymond Raposa keeps one foot in the rustic country, folk, and blues of past records while taking it--everything--to the next level. Straddling the line between "out" and accessible, the Rafter Roberts-produced Texas Rose is a full-band affair, a bent noise-country terrain of dissolving interludes and spaced-out electronic pop tracks up against songs that wouldn't be out of place on a Merle or Willie record. Texas Rose, Raposa's fifth for Asthmatic Kitty, is a statement of stoic subtlety and grandeur, an equal balance of the big and the humble, the disparate and the cohesive. It is nearly 39 minutes of stride-hitting, potential-reaching, and pure big epicness.

EARLY DAY MINERS-The Treatment LP (Secretly Canadian-$12.99)
What happens when a band of resolute perfectionists make their most accessible and upbeat rock album -- a departure so startling, you almost want to call it "their pop album"? When Early Day Miners loosen up, it's almost a different band. The complex layers and atmospherics are still there, but front-and-center on The Treatment are insistent basslines and straightforward melodies on multiple organs and guitars. One of the poppiest here, "So Slowly", manages to combine a buoyant Cure bassline, a wah-wah solo worthy of Robert Fripp, and yet still conveys the lazy drift of summer. You can even hear an echo of "Sympathy for the Devil" on the album's centerpiece "How to Fall". In some respects their most personal, subjective, and emotional album, The Treatment starts like every pop album should, with an invitation to join the band in enjoying The Treatment : "we're going out tonight / won't you join us?" but subtle clues reveal its questioning voices are not so straightforward. So
listen close -- this is an album whose every layer demands attention, and re-pays it.

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC COMPANY-Josephine LP (Secretly Canadian-$12.99)
Molina's concept album is an honest-to-God effort on the part of Magnolia Electric Co. to pay tribute to the life and spirit of fallen bassist Evan Farrell (R.I.P. December 2007), as the ideas for Josephine were being pieced together. Molina said each tune is a good faith attempt to make real Evan's hopes for the record. And in doing so, Evan's spirit becomes part of the concept. The loss of Josephine becomes the loss of Evan. Molina's familiar lyrical allegories are still in tact. But here, in what is no doubt the strongest set of songs Molina has written since the inception of Magnolia Electric Co., those classic themes take on new meanings. Molina has approached the universal loneliness before, but never in such a focused, directed manner as found on Josephine.

JASON MOLINA & WILL JOHNSON-s/t LP (Secretly Canadian-$19.99)
Consider the collective catalogs of these two prolific masters of the new American folk songcraft: Magnolia Electric Co., Centro-matic, Songs: Ohia, South San Gabriel. Now, let's just be honest. A little bit of artistic ego and one-upsmanship can serve a greater purpose. In this collaboration between Jason Molina and Will Johnson, each seem to hold the other's talents to the fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poets' poets in a workshop to craft a singular, searing elegy. Limited LP pressing that is already out of print.

KAWABATA MAKOTO-Under Your Moonshine LP (Qbico-$23.99)
"Makoto Kawabata -- electric guitar (with no overdubbing) recorded around 2003/4. The last Makoto Kawabata release for Qbico! And strange enough, Makoto told me that this was his last solo guitar recording with no overdubs. He gave to me this special solo a while ago, maybe 2003/4. I waited for the right moment to release it, just before the closure of Qbico, it all started with him."

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. - Rider, Shadow, Wolf 7" (Secretly Canadian-$6.99)
You keep on your eyes on the horizon long enough, you're bound to hit the coast. Jason Molina and the men of Magnolia Electric Co. have explored all realms of classic rock - from the subtleties of folk to charging Crazy Horse meditations. Now, on Rider.Shadow.Wolf. the band brings a surf-rock dynamic to its signature punch. This is where the tired rider, just having battled the desert, meets the eternity of an ocean. Also found here is a stripped-down, early take of "Josephine" from the band's recent longplayer of the same name. This particular recording of Josephine was laid down just after the song's inception, during the session that will later be released as a collaborative album from Molina and Will Johnson of Centro-matic. This version features Molina and Magnolia utility man Michale Kapinus on keys, and serves as a preview of what's to come in the arch of Molina's career.

SKYGREEN LEOPARDS-Gorgeous Johnny LP (Jagjaguwar-$12.99)
It's been 8 years since the first Skygreen Leopards' record was released. Since then the boys have maintained their singular aesthetic while managing to dabble with faux-folk, avant garde pop, reverb-drenched lo-fi psychedelia, plastic country and blurry ballads. This latest effort finds them collaborating with Jason Quever (Papercuts) to create a melancholy world overflowing with itinerant dandies, urban streets, suburban teens, and more girls' names than I care to count, all set to melodic shuffles featuring harmonies, frail piano, and romantic guitars. As always with the Leopards the rhythms refuse to be bridled, the boys resist the urge to jam, and they won't ever learn to sing properly. This will frustrate the expectations of some. Others will find a sweet shadowy hiding place in these songs -- 3 minutes to hang out with girls who race horses, boys who never learned to dance, and a dirty uncle who steals your cigarettes.

SUFJAN STEVENS / OSSO - Run Rabbit Run 2xLP (Asthmatic Kitty-$21.99)
In 2001, Sufjan Stevens followed up his debut album, A Sun Came, with Enjoy Your Rabbit, a series of fourteen instrumentals programmatically inspired by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Much later, in 2006, Bryce Dessner (The National, Dark Was the Night compilation, Clogs) suggested that Sufjan re-arrange the entirety of Enjoy Your Rabbit for Osso, a string quartet that had previously contributed strings to Sufjan's Illinois and My Brightest Diamond's Bring Me The Workhorse. The result is Run Rabbit Run.

SABU TOYOZUMI & MOTOTERU TAKAGI-If Ocean is Broken 2xLP (Qbico-$42.99)
"Unreleased free jazz from Japan in its prime, recorded live in Tokyo in 1971. Mototeru Takagi already released two beautiful duo LPs back then with master Japanese drummers like Masahiko Togashi (Isolation) and Toshi Tsuchitori (Origination), so this last DLP is complete in a sense the set of duo recorded with the best, 1st generation, free music drummers from Japan. On the other side it's complete also, the duo recorded by Sabu with the greatest reeds player from Japan (still of the 1st generation); being, his various duos with legendary Kaoru Abe, already documented on Qbico (Senzei) and elsewhere. About the music: raw and passionate = primitive beauty; both musicians are in top form and surely in their most creative period. Mr. Takagi plays tenor, soprano sax and bass clarinet, while Sabu is on drums and percussion. Original recordings were very well preserved (fortunately) and the pressing came out wonderful! Cover by qbico which Sabu can really dig, saying that En no Gy
oja is deeply respected by him, he opened the way..."

JONNY TRUNK-Scrapbook LP (Trunk-$16.99)
This is the second album from UK-based Trunk Records label-head, Jonny Trunk. As one would expect from a lad from Trunk, Scrapbook is a curious, entertaining and quite bewildering mix of samples, piano, men with no throats, lesbians and a Japanese choir. It's kind of jazzy, hip-hoppy, filmic, and borders on novelty once in a while. And there's a rock bit on there too. As Jonny Trunk himself explains: "This album has all come about through impatience. Over the last seven years I have tinkered and diddled with music in my bedroom, my office and my head. The 20 tracks on this album are the ones that are still just about alive and represent the scraps of music I have dubbed off or that have not been trashed from my desktop. I don't really want to see them all die, so the only way to get them off my computer and out of my life is to issue them, and the only way I thought I could do it was under the umbrella excuse of a musical scrapbook. It will become obvious quite fast that many
of the tracks are indeed scraps, sketches or unfinished business. But getting tracks completed is the hardest bit about making music, if you ask me, it takes ages to finish things sometimes, and ages is really not what I have. So I thought it best to get it all out as it is. I actually think this is alright and acceptable these days -- our attention spans have diminished, we are more used to sound bites, shorter cues, weird little things. The other nearly noteworthy point is that rather that sit around and deliberate for hours, days, weeks or months about which track should follow which track, I've simply compiled them all alphabetically, which was dead easy. It took about ten seconds. And I have only stuck with working titles for the tracks, too." Equipment used: an EMU E5000 Ultra, an old Beocenter 1800, Logic 4.7 on an Apple G3, a Yamaha P90 electric piano and a small Mackie mixer.

YEASAYER-Ambling Alp 12" (Secretly Canadian-$7.99)
Hello Again Music Enthusiast, It has been 2 full years since I last wrote about Yeasayer's debut album All Hour Cymbals and prophesied on the power of their music. I could rejoice in the accuracy of the claims, but we are merely in the beginning of the Yeasayer life cycle...there is work to be done. After 3 white winter months (Feb-Apr '09) in upstate NY at the Marotta cabin, Yeasayer wrote and layered songs for #2 (album title TBA). The tracks were then transported to Great City in NYC for mixing and the microscope. Out of these sessions came "Ambling Alp," which we elected as the first single for Yeasayer #2. A stand out from their recent live set, the band reworked the song into its former: a pop anthem. The 12" single contains remixes by friends Memory Tapes and DJ/rupture and is Yeasayer's first release on US label Secretly Canadian. To celebrate the release of the "Ambling Alp" 12" we will be unleashing a breakthrough video at yeasayer.net on the evening of October 30th
. Hush-hush we must be regarding this activity, but we promise something pioneering. More soon regarding movement in early 2010. Best.
