Hi everybody,

We have so much great Clairecords stuff going on this week, that we thought it best to send out a separate update for it all. New albums from The Daysleepers and Pia Fraus, plus a long-awaited vinyl release for The Brother Kite's magnum opus 'Waiting For the Time To Be Right'! It's available in a special limited edition package too. We also have a handful of shirts from TBK's SXSW jaunt. And let's not forget about those recent releases from park avenue music and Secret Shine! One last bit of news: the Tears Run Rings CD is currently sold out and undergoing a second pressing, so hold tight and we should have more in stock soon-ish. Thanks for making that one so successful!

For those who need to know, here's what's up on the horizon: in June we have a limited edition split 7" with The Brother Kite and Plumerai plus we should have vinyl EPs on Claire's Echo from Electro Group and Dalek vs. Ifwhen; later in the year we plan to have albums from Raymond Scott Woolson, a limited reissue of the Brittle Stars material on CD, and a limited vinyl issue of Seefeel's classic 'Quique' on quadruple vinyl! Stay tuned...

Enjoy!
THE DAYSLEEPERS-Drowned In A Sea of Sound CD (Clairecords-$12.00)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28844
A year in the making, The Daysleepers return with their full length Clairecords Debut! "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" takes nothing but the best elements of the band's highly acclaimed EP's and blends them with some entirely new experimental soundscapes. The Daysleepers trademark sound of mixing Dreampop, Post-Punk and New Wave styles is still very much present, and at times pushes even beyond those boundaries. Imagine the sounds of the Cure, Cocteau Twins, The Chameleons and Slowdive rolled into one. These 10 tracks touch on a wide variety of sounds and emotions ranging from spacey ethereal drones to blissful up-tempo dreampop beauty. For fans of the early out-of-print EP's, "Hide Your Eyes" and "The Soft Attack", "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" is a must have. It is proof that The Daysleepers have fully matured and discovered their true sound.

PIA FRAUS - After Summer CD (Clairecords-$12.00)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28845
Clairecords is extremely proud to present Pia Fraus' new album "After Summer". After 5 long years, we welcome the Estonian pop geniuses back to the Clairecords label with open arms.
"After Summer" is produced by legendary Glaswegian Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Pastels etc). Pia Fraus and Norman Blake kept file transfer programs busy for months to exchange soundfiles; this relationship has created something magical. "After Summer" is the 4th proper album from the Pias, and quite possibly their best album to date. No wonder, if your idol takes producer's chair! The album also features some guest musicians: Estonian electronica stars Galaktlan and Pastacas guest on two of the album's tracks. Moreover, "After Summer" has the well-known and well-loved Pia Fraus sound, quality songwriting, a lot of studio tricks and layers of guitars, synths, and boy/girl vocals. This album will bring huge grins to the mouths of Pia Fraus fans, yet at the same time it is a perfect introduction to Pia Fraus for the uninitiated.
For fans of My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, Chicago Underground Quartet, The Pastels, The Beatles, and – of course - Pia Fraus!

THE BROTHER KITE - Waiting For The Time To Be Right 180g LP+CD (Clairecords-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=29006
LIMITED TO ONLY 200 COPIES WORLDWIDE!! Finally, the sophomore album from The Brother Kite is presented to the masses on vinyl!! The production on this vinyl has been an absolute nightmare, fraught with problem after problem and delay after delay - but the Wait is over, and we hope you find it was worth the wait! This limited edition release is presented on 180-gram audiophile-quality virgin black vinyl.
In addition to the vinyl, this package includes an exclusive bonus CDr (professionally-manufactured), entitled "Inside Waiting For The Time To Be Right". We thought someone who liked the album enough to purchase the vinyl might be interested in peeling away some of its layers, just for curiosity's sake. So on this CDr, you will find alternative mixes of every song on the album. They are not intended to hold up on their own (although they do!), but the intent was to reveal some interesting, intriguing and/or hidden elements that you may not have noticed before. Stripped down, these songs are a powerful, beautiful and emotional tour-de-force - even more than they were to begin with.
Providence, Rhode Island's The Brother Kite began crafting their shoegaze-inflected rock sound in 2001, when founding members Patrick Boutwell and Jon Downs began writing and recording original material as a duo. Bassist Andrea Mason and guitarist Mark Howard joined them in 2002, and the band released a split 7" record with friends Vaguely Starshaped on Boston's Losing Blueprint Records. The Brother Kite then released their first full length album on Clairecords, thebrotherkite (2004), a self-titled and self-recorded serving of layered guitars and buoyant melodies. Their ambitious debut earned them nationwide attention from critics and music fans alike. They soon enlisted Matt Rozzero as full-time drummer, and relentlessly toured the east coast, gaining new fans at every show and further refining their unique sound.
With the success of thebrotherkite, they were poised to take a bold step, but knew the restrictions of traditional studio recording wouldn't allow for the creative freedom they needed to realize their vision. So they did what any band would do: build their own studio! Waiting For The Time To Be Right is the long-awaited result of this endeavor, a brave new rock record, astonishing not only for its depth and maturity, but also for its willingness to stray from the shoegaze sound that most easily defined their previous works. Layered guitar textures remain, of course, an important ingredient. However, Boutwell's impassioned vocals are now pushed to the forefront, showcasing a Brian Wilson-esque gift for melody hinted at in earlier songs. Guitarist/engineer Downs demonstrates a knack for crafting mini-symphonies out of Boutwell's creations, while drummer Rozzero's skillful percussion adds subtle new dimensions at every turn. Include Mason's rock-solid bass and Howard's e
legant lead guitar, and the result is an album of dynamically orchestrated pop, equal parts Loveless and Smile, Quadrophenia and The Soft Bulletin. With Waiting For The Time To Be Right, The Brother Kite respectfully pay homage to some of rock's great achievements, while carving out an innovative spot for themselves in the world of today's independent music.

ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE-Postcards From Nowhere CDr (Distant Noise-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28963
LIMITED to 100 copies!! For fans of: Piano Magic, Hood, Slowdive, Sigur Ros, July Skies, Labradford, Bark Psychosis, Yellow6, etc. ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE is the solo project of the 25 year-old George Mastrokostas, based in Athens, Greece. Recording everything himself in his home-studio, he creates a melancholic sound that covers a multitude of styles such as shoegaze, post-rock, ambient and electronica. To date, he has released his music on labels such as unlabel (uk), duotone (japan), fuzzy panda (usa), bsbta (denmark), october man (uk) and also on his own label sound in silence (greece) and has collaborated for split releases with artists like yellow6, kimonophonic, lope, doogie and cono norte 3. He has played several gigs in Greece at various venues, including synch festival 2007 (among other artists like mum, !!!, front 242, fischerspooner, alexander hacke and many others) and support gigs with piano magic (after being selected by piano magic themselves) and section 25 (fro
m legendary factory records).
This new album is calming, melancholic, and optimistic in equal parts, and there is always the auro of dreams, nostalgia, and romanticism in it. It's a mixture of cinematic ambient, mellow shoegaze, and melodic post-rock. Delicately picked and opiated chiming guitars, subtle drum machines, ethereal keyboards, glockenspiel with a lullaby feel, loops, samples and other instruments combine to form a rich, warm album full of atmospheric soundscapes.

DEAD LEAF ECHO-Pale Fire CD (Year of the Gallon-$
"Shoegaze fans will likely not want to let Pale Fire slip under their radar...." -Angry Ape ".....captures the spirit of 4AD melancholia perfectly...." -Leonard's Lair
Taking their cue from Nabokov's masterpiece Lolita, Dead Leaf Echo has become commentary on a new style. By crafting every aspect of their sound and vision, they remain one of the few left willing to work on high-art as concept. Pale Fire, their 2nd release, featuring the title track mixed by ULRICH SCHNAUSS (Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Mojave 3) and recorded at the Bunker Studio (Ambulance LTD., Hot Chip) is now available through their own record label Year of the Gallon Records. Pale Fire is quickly being hailed as something new and inventive amongst the underground music scene. Formed in 2005, LG (vocals, guitars) together with Mike DiLalla (bass) and Liza B.(keys, vocals) have been formulating their craft for years.
Finally exposing themselves to the public. They have brought with them a completely visual landscape to their live shows by always being backed by live projections.

DULCESKY-Unfamiliar EP CD (Nueve Music-$6.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28926
Sometimes, the best way to jumpstart songwriting creativity is playing someone else's song. That wasn't necessarily the plan when DulceSky set out to cover the mighty Ride in early 2007, but it ended up being the result. Long time Ride fans, they jumped at the chance to cover "Unfamiliar," a Nowhere-era b-side, for a Ride tribute album. But it wasn't a matter of simply going into the studio and banging out a version of the song in an afternoon.
DulceSky tried slowing the tempo down and a few other ideas that went, well, nowhere. Stuck, the band turned to technology. A Groovebox sampler was enlisted, and the band had a revelation: strap the straight-ahead rock of "Unfamiliar" to a two-step, almost disco beat, and watch the sparks fly. The result was a driving, powerful take on a classic and, eventually, a window into the recording of the Unfamiliar EP.
When it became apparent that the Ride tribute album had stalled and possibly would never see the light of day, DulceSky decided to release their cover instead of letting it gather dust. And then the songs started coming: "Icon of Distress," a politically charged slow burner with the band's trademark textured guitars, "In Your Way," an atmospheric ode to reconciliation, and the elegiac "Ana in a Dream," a deeply personal and beautiful song featuring acoustic strumming and arpeggios (elements rarely heard in the DulceSky camp) on a bed of shimmering keyboards. What came from the circuits of that unwitting Groovebox turned out to be a coherent work that furthers DulceSky's story in exciting ways. The Unfamiliar EP fits perfectly within the band's discography while suggesting potential new horizons in their sound. More than a transitional work, though, the songs here speak for themselves: four tracks that, taken together, are a testament to an enduring band's creative vision. -
HAMMOCK-Maybe They'll Sing For Us Tomorrow CD (Darla-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28941
After four well-loved and critically lauded recordings, Hammock returns with a new full-length, special release, Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow, which features eleven new songs and original artwork by Riceboy Sleeps (Jonsi Birgisson of the Grammy-nominated Sigur Ros and Alex Somers of Parachutes). At the invitation of Birgisson and Somers, Hammock gave their first-ever live performance at the after party celebration of the Riceboy Sleeps overseas debut art exhibition, held in Hot Springs, AR in August 2007. Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow is the studio recording of the original music written and played by Hammock for the occasion. “Studio performance” is a more accurate phrase, as the guitars for these songs were recorded live, just as the band performed them, later rounded out by Matt Slocum’s expansive, emotive cello. This is Hammock reduced to an essence—a core. There are no intrusions. No beats. No lyrics. Nothing to break the spell or jar the listener out of t
he moment. Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow has all of the vulnerability and spontaneity of a performance, yet all of the rich, cinematic beauty of a Hammock studio recording. Hammock’s self-imposed minimalism is expertly merged with their hallmark melodic songwriting, resulting in the most focused, mesmeric and deeply personal album in their catalog to date.
SECRET SHINE-All Of The Stars JAPANESE EDITION 2xCD (Quince-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28962
Special Japanese licensed issue of the new album from Secret Shine, which includes a second disc featuring all the tracks from their Elemental EP and the now-out-of-print Beyond Sea and Sky EP, all tracks fully remastered! Unique artwork for this issue as well.
All of the Stars is Secret Shine's second studio album, and their first in 14 years. The band took an unscheduled nine year break before returning in 2004 with the release of their back catalogue (After Years) on Clairecords, followed by two emphatically-received EPs of new material in 2006, and live shows in Europe and America.
All of the Stars encapsulates the passion of Secret Shine's live power pop in the heart-thumping 'Oblivion', 'Voice of the Sea' and 'The Sound of Light' but is both delicate and beautiful in 'All that's left' and 'Last Leaves'. Secret Shine have lost none of the sumptuous boy/girl harmonies and celestial melodies (never more evident than in the heavenly 'Stars in the Sky') that made their debut album Untouched such a classic that is still revered in shoegazing circles today.
Secret Shine dedicated 2007 to write and record All of the Stars and demoed twice the amount of songs they needed for the album so that only the finest would survive. The band have grown on this record – the sound is stronger and more confident, expertly produced and directed by Shine protagonist Jamie Gingell. The band drift effortlessly between the epic, orchestral arrangements of 'Café Crash' and the sparse, haunting piano-led 'Another Day'.
All of the Stars would sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like Slowdive's Souvlaki, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and The Pale Saints' The Comforts of Madness, but Secret Shine have created their own unique treasure and possibly the new wave of 'stargaze'.
THISQUIETARMY-Unconquered CD (Foreshadow Music-$15.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28971
THISQUIETARMY is a solo project from a young talented Canada-based artist Eric Quach. He is also known for being a guitarist in a renowned shoe-gaze band DESTROYALLDREAMERS. As THISQUIETARMY, he explores never-ending spectrum of guitar ambience and loop drone sounds. From the mellow opening of “Immobilization”, through grandiose “Battlefield Arkestrah” and “The Sun Destroyers”, gloomy “Death of a Sailor”, to closing notes of “Empire”, Eric Quach manages to capture the essence of contemporary alternative guitar experimentation while maintaining disturbing but also captivating aural atmosphere. “Unconquered” presents this musical project as consciously standing among the best artists of this genre, which is symbolized by the guest appearance of Aidan Baker. On the other hand, THISQUIETARMY, already on his debut album, looks far into the future and crosses the boundaries, the best sign of which are the clean female vocals of Meryem Yildiz in one of the tracks – something not com
mon in the field of ambient drone guitar music. Eric’s experience in DESTROYALLDREAMERS, numerous live performances, brave open mind and genuine artistic freedom allowed him to deliver his first official debut full-length album in a flawless and extraordinary way.
Recurring Dream And Apocalypse Of Darkness is the by far the heaviest Acid Mothers Temple record yet. So heavy, in fact, that Kawabata Makoto jokingly said "the album is really heavy, maybe a bit like Sunn o))). hahahaha". The limited edition double LP version of Recurring Dream is packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on heavy duty jacket and it contains two bonus tracks rounding out the double LP set. Both the CD & LP feature remarkable art work by Seldon Hunt. LP is limited to 1000. The Acid Mothers Temple will be embarking on a coast to coast tour to support Recurring Dream And Apocalypse Of Darkness.
A radical departure from the entirety of their earlier work. The songs slice & dice w/a frenzied precision, their pummeling pace interrupted only sparingly by the placid fare of Autumns past. & yet the latter merge all the more lovely from the record's generally rough relief.
BOBBY & BLUMM-Everybody Loves Bobby & Blumm CD (Morr-$15.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28998
Bobby tours with her band It's A Musical! and as Bobby Baby and manages a pop-camp for teenage girls in Sweden and Germany. Frank Schültge Blumm has been releasing records since 1998. His first full-length solo album came out on Morr Music in 2001(Mondkuchen), and he is an author and producer of radio-plays. Their debut recording features voices and pickings, guitar, keyboard, Swedish bag and other biscuits. B&B try to give the wide world of pop some little turns and unexpected changes with hiss and rustle, dreamy sound, soft and fragile voices, purity and warmth. Everybody Loves... was recorded 50km north of Berlin in a little house at the edge of the forest in a room with wooden walls and as a result, you will hear the crackling sounds of shellac records, a caressing clothes-brush, some fingertips on greaseproof paper, as well as swi
nging coat hangers on the night train to Krakow, flat-wound strings on a big guitar and above all, a gentle and silky voice. Bobby and Blumm feel the influence of the following records: Stina Nordenstam, People Are Strange, Nico, Chelsea Girl, Juana Molina, Tres Cosas, David Grubbs, Banana Cabbage, Potato Lettuce, Onion Orange and The Best Of Burt Bacharach.
Their fifth studio album is a summer album, a warped Technicolor celebration - pop music and severe cut-ups going from melody to acid psychosis to acoustic, usually in the same song. "Do It!" is a skewed pop amalgam of Motown, Exuma, deep lounge, and The Balloon Farm, amongst many. Songs about living for the day, love, escaping witchhunts, and more. Mixed by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon, Archie Bronson Outfit).
CLOUDLAND CANYON-Lie in Light CD (Kranky-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28982
"It appears there is a second 'kosmische musik' period in full bloom around the world at the moment, not so much 'kosmische' as in 'Krautrock' but instead 'cosmic.' At Kranky they have the celestial symphonies of Stars of the Lid, the guitar circle prog-psych of White Rainbow, the astral folk explorations of Lichens, the cut and splice electro-motorik of Andrew Pekler, the alien space-blues of Valet, and now the half-German, half-American duo Cloudland Canyon, who actually bring the full-on 'Krautrock' on. You can play pick the influences if you like, but you can do that with any group. Cloudland certainly owe a debt to the German underground of the '70s, but they have also added flourishes of baroque pop and even a tinge of the '80s New Zealand scene into their sound. That they have ingested these influences and then delivered something as dynamic as this album without sounding like rote imitation is what impresses. The album is anything but one-dimensional, as they traverse
a wide swath of territory. From the lock down groove of the opening track 'Krautwerk,' to the dense buzz of 'White Woman,' through the pastoral pscyh of 'Heme' and on to the gentle wash of the closer 'Mothlight,' Cloudland Canyon have created an eclectic and rewarding listen."
Instrumental combo hailing from Frankfort Germany create a listening experience using crisp & thinly layered synths and half buried samples. While staying true to the Krautrock glide of Can and Tangerine Dream , Reverie is intricately woven headphone music for those who like their loudness plunging to the depths of the ocean while treading on the moddy middle ground of pure resonance and dulcet friction
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28943
After two magnificent Sending Orbs albums (‘Through Friendly Waters’, ‘My Dogan’), and last year’s acclaimed ambient electronic / jazz / classical hybrid ‘Whisper Me Wishes’ on Clone / DUB, Kettel aka Reimer Eising re-emerges with the first part of the ‘Myam James’ series. Kettel manages to squeeze uplifting, warm, cheerful and enjoyable maximal electronic music out of his kettle and pottery factory, which is sad, melancholic and sensitive all at the same time, characteristic of the paradoxical twist in much of his work : beauty lies in the melancholy. Add to this Kettel's profound knowledge of composition and his passionate love of the roots of the early 90s Warp sound, and we guarantee you'll be chained to your speakers for the next months. ‘Myam James Part 1’ is nine tracks of Kettel ecstasy, including a brilliant remix of ‘My Dogan’s title track by early influencers Phoenecia (Schematic/Warp), and seven minutes of Vangelis-style remix synthesizer-madness by Secede.
The idea of youth -wasted, gilded or otherwise- has always feat. prominently in their music. "On this record I wanted to have the feeling of a teenager mixed w/ this period of the 80s," Anthony Gonzalez explains. The result is their most explicit celebration yet of how it feels to be dazed, confused & 15 yrs old
NO AGE-Nouns CD (Sub Pop-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28973
No Age: the name alone suggests multiple meanings and possible interpretations—timeless, ageless, anonymous, free from restriction, something positive from something negative… a profound strength in its simplicity. Likewise, the Los Angeles duo consisting of drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall is many things at once even as it embraces its minimalism. No Age issued a slew of singles on a variety of indie labels in 2007, resulting in the tellingly cohesive compendium, Weirdo Rippers on Fat Cat Records later that year. That widely heralded release inspired such mainstream press as The New Yorker and the L.A. Times to feature the band’s ties to the underground scene surrounding the Los Angeles all-ages club The Smell.
Recorded by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in LA, Harvey Birrell at Southern Studios in London, and at home by No Age, Nouns, the band’s Sub Pop debut, is succinctly all-encompassing, from the faux-simplicity of the title to the beautiful distortion of its sound, to the packaging that includes a 68-page full-color book packed with photos and art pieces. The record opens with a symphony of noise (both Dean and Randy use samples alongside their main instruments) and sometimes creeps, sometimes smashes through a sonic headlock befitting Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth, Kiwi pop, My Bloody Valentine, and experimental noise. “No Age is a band,” says Dean. “Bands should be fun and exciting and they should push all the buttons at the same time. They should make you feel like you are going to explode and make you utterly confused and inspired at the same time.” And sometimes they do.
Hugely anticipated album from the UK Electronic outfit. It's been ten long years since PNYC and the wait is over! Third is the 2008 album from Portishead. They are a trip-hop group from Bristol, England, named after the nearby town of the same name. Um, in case you didn't know. Yep. 11 tracks.
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28977
From the beginning it was their concoction of metal trimmings, minimal jazz primers, & cryptic riffs that hit the scene out of nowhere w/ the pummeling impact of a rouge comet crashing in from the skies. Their music weaves up an intense & cinematic albeit soothing clobbering that cannot be put into words but instead into forms of audible head trips that defies pigeonholing.
To start 2008 in the best way you should definitely check this album that compiles all songs ever recorded by this wonderful Swedish outfit! It includes 2 unreleased songs and liner notes by Fraction Discs' Jorgen Svensson!
Check out the bandmember’s solo projects, Thirst For Treasures (Victor), Punktslut (Tobias) and Mr.Pedro(Petter). STRATEGY-Music for Lamping CD (Audio Dregs-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28944
Strategy's Paul Dickow has been a longtime cornerstone player in Portland, Oregon's electronic and experimental music community. He was once a drummer in the punk group Emergency, a keyboard player in jazz/post-rock's Fontanelle, played drums and electronics in Nudge, DJs eclectic disco and techno sets, and also remixes and produces dancefloor bangers as well as ambient, abstract pop expressions under his solo moniker Strategy. He has built up a name releasing acclaimed albums for Kranky and 12"s for labels such as ORAC (Seattle) and Dreck (London) and also by founding the premier Cascadian freedom music record label known as Community Library. For years Paul and Audio Dregs have been comrades and collaborators and now we are proud to bring you his latest offering that collects Strategy's rain-soaked chillout recordings and slow motion filtered dubscapes. These are the tracks rescued from the mornings after the dance parties and longer compositions collected from his studio i
n moss covered corners of green Cascadian forest caverns. "Music for Lamping contains six years' worth of music that can roughly be called ambient - perhaps "meditative" is a better word. All of this music combines my interest in blurring/expanding/clouding processes--such as granular synthesis, vocoding, and bucket-brigade delay--with happenstance sound sources, such as field recordings or a favorite record sitting around the studio. The earliest music dates to a 2002 CD that was never released, entitled Strategy At Beacon Rock, which was intended as a 'gentle' or 'atmospheric' treatment of plundered audio. The material from 2004 onwards dates to a period of soundwalks in my neighborhood of Northwest Portland (a perfect strolling zone). Taken altogether, these pieces form a traceable thread through my work where I use my usual raw materials to reach a more liquid, spontaneous end result." -Paul Dickow TRACKLISTING: 1. I Can't Stand the Rain 2. Cathedral Spark 3. Bike Click 4. All Day... 5. World Service 6. Lower Macleay
TAPE-Opera Plus CD (Hapna-$16.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28995
Opera Plus is a reissue of Tape's 2002 full-length debut Opera (HAPNA 009CD), with three new tracks taken from the original 2002 sessions. Tape are Johan Berthling, Andreas Berthling and Tomas Hallonsten: guitars, laptop, pedals, synthesizers, harmonium, melodica, field recordings, percussion, harmonica, zither, piano, flute, bells, glockenspiel, accordion, trumpet, paper, styrofoam, yongmei. As Stephan Mathieu wrote at the time of this release, "Tape's music lives at the intersection of a 21st century chamber music and an imaginary folklore. Slowly passing by vast yellow rape fields and ancient, abandoned factories, the music on my headphones seems to fit almost too perfectly. The sun and nature are certainly core ingredients of Opera and its slowly floating melodies carry the spirit of travel, not on an aircraft, but submerged in a landscape instead." In the meantime, Tape have distilled their sound with their albums such as Milieu, Rideau, as well as collaborations with Te
nniscoats more and more into an organic song-like format. While all of them are excellent, Tape's essence can be found in Opera. Listening to Opera again after almost six years, it proves to be a truly great and timeless album. Now in a digipak with new cover art.
TAPE-Milieu Plus CD (Hapna-$16.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28996
Milieu Plus is a reissue of Tape's 2003 second full-length, Milieu (HAPNA 014CD), with four new tracks taken from the original 2003 sessions. When this album first came out, it sounded like nothing else. Seemingly improvised but still so tenderly composed, it took cues from both the most gentle free jazz and Brian Eno's ideas of ambient music, but at the same time leaning against both Swedish folk music and broken pop balladry. Milieu -- together with its forerunner Opera -- became something of a stepping stone for, if not a new kind of pop, at least a new way of approaching it and a new way of seeing what it could achieve. Tape had very little to do with traditional experimental music, they never fitted into jazz and -- although many tried to -- their beautiful songs could not by any means be labelled electronica. Instead it was the genuine gentleness itself of Tape's music that spoke to their soul mates across the world. Milieu opened a door to a musical heart their contemp
oraries had been trying to reach for a long time. As Andres Lokko describes of this release, "Tape stir up such forgotten feelings, they restore fading pictures we don't really want to share with anyone else. Or in some cases have forgotten they were ever there in the first place. The aching slowness of these melodies awaken reluctant nostalgia; a forced sentimentality. And they do so without the aid of words, only with the purest music; the electricity in the air that surrounds the captured moment." Now in a digipak with new cover art.
Their 2006 EP, "A Lesson In Crime", elicited raves from Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Interview, Blender, and Nylon, among others. Since then, TPC have been touring virtually nonstop, pausing only to release last year's "Smith" EP and the digital-only single, "Your English Is Good." Now Ontario's favorite sons offer their first full-length.
Where the EP was full of youthful, pell-mell, punked-up energy, ELEPHANT SHELL shows the band honing their angular indie rock into a style that's as seductive as it is energetic. The atmospheric "Juno" and the dreamy, meandering "The Harrowing Adventures of ?" show how Tokyo Police Club are maturing, but despite amazingly sharp songcraft and brain-bending shoegaze guitars, the music is still driven by propulsive rhythms and nervy, post-punk chops that recall the Strokes. "Centennial" and "Graves" are two tracks that show just how promising this outfit, and ELEPHANT SHELL, can be.
Valet "Tuesday Partly Sunny" This collection was curated by Paul Dickow together with E*Rock as a long term project showcasing some outsider ambient works and blissed-out pop from their hometown in Portland as well as friends across the seas. Emphasis was made to bring together artists from a variety of scenes and different underground bubbles of music producers that remain close to our hearts. Though many of the artists may have never previously bumped shoulders it was
important for us in keeping a common thread in the musicality and a conscious flow to the collection. Ambient Not Not Ambient should act strongly on its own merit as a complete thematically unified album of exclusive tracks, not an ad-hoc collection of unrelated tracks. This is part of the reason it took us so long to organize from conception to completion and to paint a larger picture with the variety involved. We are now stoked though and proud to offer this maxed-out 75+ minute compilation of exclusive tracks at special "EP" price. What you'll find is the mellow side of sonic terrorists like Yellow Swans (Load Records) next to old school electronic mainstays like Freeform (Skam/Warp) or AM/PM (Dreck) and full blown psychedelic wizards like White Rainbow (Kranky/Marriage) and Birdshow (Kranky). Tracks by Lucky Dragons unique "sound art" style next to pop craftsman E*Vax (of Ratatat fame) float together with sparse compositions by Sawako (12k). There will be some fresh faces on the table for almost any listener (even the hard-core music nerds), for instance Smoke & Mirrors is the debut appearance by a new duo featuring Strategy’s Paul Dickow. Some of our favorite experimentalists and growling amorphous freedom rock and anti-rock have been cross-pollinated with some of best musical friends and ever expanding audio family. "Hototogisu's first LP release on their own imprint Heavy Blossom. Under The Rose is a pair of incantations for the dark and vengeful animal spirits. Sung in two parts, malignant coronation and origami skulls are blackened arias, dizzying vortices and canyons of screams, guitars and chaotic rhythms. Arising from this richly recorded and mastered vinyl slab come black tarpits of malevolence and savage beauty, harking back to a pre-Christian universe of animating spirits and tutelary daemons. REPRESSED! Originally released in April 1996, this was the moment when the band finally kicked off its shoes, cracked the studio windows, & unleashed a long suite of songs showcasing the band's true range. This 2LP gives it all up: paranoid blues rants, Delhi-via-the Ozarks hoedowns, spaghetti western lopers, carnivalesque boogie, a blazing, frustrated finale, & as always, that guitar sound.
Previously reissued on CD by Phoenix Records, now issued on a limited edition deluxe LP format as well; pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl. This is the first vinyl reissue of the self-titled first album by '60s electronic legends Silver Apples, originally released by Kapp Records in 1968. Fresh off their stint as The Overland Stage Electric Band, Simeon and Dan Taylor formed their own extravagant, two-man electronic space-odyssey, Silver Apples, to remarkable critical acclaim. "What's so amazing is that they make absolutely mind-shattering music with all this junky equipment," commented one reviewer, astounded over the then-mindbending concept of build-it-yourself electronics combined with rock drums. The debut album features lyrics by poet Stanley Warren and is an absolutely essential piece of musical history from electronic/psychedelic/rock music's ground-breaking legends. Housed in a deluxe gatefold foil sleeve containing the insert from the original release in a numbered li
"This is Soul Jazz Records' new journey into the heart of New Orleans and a guide to the city's finest funk music produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Featuring everyone from The Meters to Eddie Bo, Lee Dorsey to Betty Harris, this is a who's who of the Crescent City's most famous and most funky! The city of New Orleans has deep musical roots that stretch back to Africa. New Orleans first gave birth to jazz music, a black musical form centered on rhythm, improvisation, freedom and collectivity at the turn of the century. Similarly in the late 1960s, New Orleans funk came to define a unique sound, mixing Caribbean rhythms, New Orleans second-line syncopation and rhythm and blues, all played by the Big Easy's finest musicians. While jazz and funk music spread throughout the world, many African-American musical traditions remained within the city limits such as Mardi Gras and Carnival, Saturday Night fish fries, funeral marching bands and much more, which partly explains
why New Orleans music is so unique. The album comes with extensive sleeve-notes, exclusive photography and more, and is an essential guide to the musical landscape of New Orleans and -- together with Soul Jazz Records' earlier New Orleans' releases -- presents the definitive story of New Orleans funk. Although on the mainland coast, New Orleans is also surrounded by lakes, giving the city an island feel. Similarly, its proximity to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti and the other West Indian Isles means that Latin and Caribbean musical influences are in its veins as much as American musical traditions. The upside of this city's isolation is that New Orleans musical traditions flourished away from those of the rest of America. A thriving city full of artists, musicians, singers, producers, record companies, studios (well, one studio, actually) led to a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week musical life, playing in clubs, bars, brothels, carnivals and parades. The downside of the city's isolation from the rest of the U.S. was that the city never developed a solid music industry to back up the creative over-supply. While New York had Atlantic, Detroit had Motown, Memphis had Stax, Chicago had Chess, Los Angeles had Modern, New Orleans had a multitude of small businesses fighting for space -- and often each other. Without the marketing, promotional weight, business and financial clout, New Orleans labels found it hard to get the nationwide distribution necessary to fill the million-odd jukeboxes throughout the country. So while every family in America knows the music of Gladys Knight or Smokey Robinson, few could tell you about -- let alone hum a tune from -- Benny Spellman, Inell Young, Warren Lee...this is far from being a reflection of the artists' creativity or musicality -- as anyone can tell you, New Orleans' melodies are the catchiest of all -- more it is a reflection of the limitations of the local music industry. Some New Orleans artists became successful throughout the U.S., such as Fats Domino in the 1950s and in the late 1960s, The Meters and Lee Dorsey, but many artists remained within the city limits. This makes for a fascinating goldmine of music released by a complex myriad of small labels run mainly by New Orleans producers, promoters and artists themselves. New Orleans Funk 2 brings together many of these artists along with text, sleeve-notes and photographs that gives social and historical context to the incredibly funky music of New Orleans."
Debut 45 from what has become something of a multi-national supergroup of sorts. Ex-EIGHTEENTH DAY OF MAY mainguy, richard olson, SOLEDAD BROTHERS drummer ben swank, former gps 45 guy PETE GREENWOOD on guitars and lap steel and KEVIN PEYOK. 2 fabulous slices of southern u.s folk rock, recalling gene clark, the byrds and burritos with a passing nod to big star perhaps. beautiful, soaring vocals and a gem of a 45 to open up with. early gigs included bill doss from the olivia tremor control - unsurprising given the uplifting nature of the sunny psych tunes within. 300 only 45 given the usual GPS packaging treatment... already out of print.
COLOUR KANE-A Taste of CD (Fade the World-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28607
Colour Kane are one of the new breed of dream popsters with music that stands for cascading guitars and sweet soaring vocals propelled by driving bass and electronic beats. The music draws a wonderful arc that both defines and divides melancholy and bliss. Where so much dream pop is described through aesthetic alone, Colour Kane radiates atmosphere and shifted emotion wrapped in jeweled blankets and honey gauze.
The band's music found Robin Guthrie, who offered his support, ultimately leading to the band supporting Robin during his Lumière shows in Belgium in addition to the remixed track on "A Taste Of". The single "Too Late" taken from the album is a remix by Glorybox front man Fredrik Johansson.
REVIEW: "A Taste Of" features no shortage of blissed-out material but perhaps no songs are more heavenly than the anthemic "Share My Ease", "Silya" and, yes, "Seaside Dream" which constitute as magnificent a sampling of dream-pop as you're likely to hear in this lifetime. " --Textura (Toronto, Canada) - May 2007 - by Ron Schepper

MOSCOW OLYMPICS-Cut the World CD (Lavender-$9.99)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Moscow Olympics are a brilliant band from the Philippines, and they are part of a wonderful current scene of amazing independent pop alongside likeminded artists such as The Airfields, Afraid of Stairs, and all the bands on fabulous labels like Fraction Discs, Lavender Records, and more. They take the soul of classic labels like Creation, Sarah, and Slumberland, and breathe new life into that sound. A dreampop/shoegaze/indiepop update for the late 00's. This is perhaps the pinnacle moment of the current movement. Moscow Olympics will undoubtedly become a classic name to behold in independent music circles for decades.
The term “dreampop” got a new and wider meaning when the Philippine quintet Moscow Olympics released their debut single on Fraction Discs. Pop as a dream come true, two tracks that raise their gaze off their shoes, stare into the skies and fill the unexpected yet somehow eagerly awaited gap in your record collection - the one between Blueboy’s “Unisex” and The Wake’s “Here Comes Everybody”. This now is their debut CD.

SATURATION POINT-On The Blink CD (LouTunes-$9.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28894
Blissed out instrumentals of the melodic and textural type. Lots of reverbed and delayed guitars. Sometimes gauzy and sleepy. Sometimes fuzzy and ferocious. sometimes strange, yet always beautiful. Influenced by Mogwai, Tarentel, Tristeza, Durutti Column, Landing, Eluvium, Labradford, The Church, Pink Floyd, etc.
The lone band member is Lou Stubecki. All songs, sounds, artwork, and prose created by Lou at home. Many of his samples come from field recordings of random sounds. This album took 5 years to create. There are no vocals. Yet the song titles, samples, and prose (on the insert) convey a disillusionment with the poisoning of our mental environment. This is Saturation Point's 3rd release.
65DAYSOFSTATIC-The Distant and Mechanised Glow of East European Dance Parties CD (Monotreme-$8.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28905
During their brief winter hiatus, 65daysofstatic went into the studio to record "The Distant and Mechanised Glow of East
European Dance Parties" E.P to accompany their 2008 tour dates supporting The Cure. Comprising two very different takes on the LP track of the same name, plus two completely new songs, "The Distant and Mechanised Glow of East European Dance Parties" answers the question "what happens if we put these instruments down for a couple of seconds and create a 16
strong choir from our own under rehearsed voices?"

AETHENOR-Betimes Black Cloudmasses CD (VHF-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28867
Betimes Black Cloudmasses is the highly-anticipated second album from Vincent De Roguin (Shora), Stephen O'Malley (SUNN0))), KTL), and Daniel O'Sullivan (Guapo). Like their genre- and audience-confounding debut Deep In Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light, Betimes is an atmospheric, constantly changing piece that encompasses a mind-boggling array of different performance and processing techniques. The deeply psychedelic and moving results present a soundstage that is continually evolving, with new elements entering and leaving the fray every couple of seconds.
Betimes includes significant contributions from free percussionists Nicolas Field and Alex Babel, who sprinkle the sound field with an almost FMP-style rush of splattering drum sound, raising the intensity of the music (without resorting to bashing). The album also features a brief but affecting vocal from Ulver mastermind Kristoffer Rygg, who made his first live appearance in over a decade when Aethenor played the Roadburn Festival in April 2008. Aethenor's third LP, featuring vocals and lyrics by David Tibet, will be released in Autumn 2008.
"Musically, Aethenor summon the most somnolent examples of Bernard Parmegiani, Organum, Nurse with Wound, Klaus Schulze, Igor Wakhevitch, Coil, Iancu Dumitrescu, and Charlemagne Palestine. Acousmatic drones ebb and flow into crackling and bubbling sonic clusters. Lulling piano motifs and lamenting chants shimmer into distant lunar horizons while oscillators spin and drove serenely into unchartered audial regions. Sometimes as calm as a silvery sea, so that every gentle cat's-paw and lapping wave is deafening. Sometimes as tempestuous as a fuming lava beach, spitting and popping at the surface." --Daniel O'Sullivan

THE APPLES IN STEREO-Electronic Projects for Musicians CD (Yep Roc-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28901
Fresh off the release of the critically acclaimed New Magnetic Wonder and one of the most productive years of their career (including recording a remix for Yoko Ono and tours of Europe and Taiwan), The Apples in stereo are releasing the long-awaited compilation Electronic Projects for Musicians through Simian Records/Yep Roc Records/ Elephant 6. Named after an electronics how-to manual by Craig Anderton, the album can be seen as the band's follow-up to their 1996 compilation Science Faire.
The album spans over 10 years and includes music from b-sides and rarities recorded between 1995 and 2007. It also features three previously unreleased tracks: "Stephen Stephen," written for and originally performed on Stephen Colbert's The Colbert Report; "The Apples in stereo Theme Song," recorded for the band's website; and the highly anticipated "Dreams," a previously unfinished track from 1997's Tone Soul Evolution.

JESSICA BAILIFF & ANNELIES MONSERE-Untitled CDEP (Morc-$10.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28863
Numbered limited edition of 310 in an LP like sleeve. Annelies Monseré (Belgium/Bluesanct records) and Jessica Bailiff (US/Kranky) met back in 2002, during Jessica's first European tour. They've been frequently doing shows together since 2005. They've often joined each other on stage, but recording together didn't happen until they did a duo-tour in October 2007. On this occasion, they've totally reworked two rare tracks of Jessica, and two yet unreleased songs by Annelies. Although it's just the two of them, this ep has a very built-up sound, which is reminiscent of Jessica's earliest output and Annelies' most recent live shows. Vocals, guitars and cello- and keyboard drones get a very prominent role on these recordings, which were made entirely in the analog domain. The ep is limited to 310, and comes in a mini-lp jacket. All copies are hand-numbered and have hand-written liner notes by Annelies.

BATTLES-Mirrored CD (Warp-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28910
Battles' first album proper is a significant measure of evolution from a band that has yet to cease moving. Still entirely intact are the unflinching experimentations and metallic angles of their young catalog, but a new melodic insight has manifested itself in the form of some of their most engaging tracks yet. Mirrored has received 'Best Of 2007' accolades by the likes of TIME Magazine, NME, Pitchfork, URB, Spin, MOJO and others.

ANTHONY BRAXTON-Quartet (GTM) 2006 4xCD BOX SET (Important-$26.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28864
Quartet (GTM) 2006 is Anthony Braxton's first release for Important Records. GTM stands for Ghost Trance Music and this four cd box set contains four Ghost Trance compositions recorded in quarted with Anthony Braxton playing reeds, Carl Testa on bass, Aaron Siegal on percussion and Max Heath on piano. This 4 cd box also contains a definitive essay by Braxton on his Ghost Trance compositions.
Anthony Braxton (born June 4, 1945 in Chicago) is an American composer, saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, pianist and philosopher. Over the course of his career he has crafted an immense body of highly complex work. Though Braxton is hardly known to the casual listener he is certainly one of the most prolific American musicians/composers to date, having released well over 100 albums since the 1960s. In 1994 he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Braxton plays a multitude of instruments including the flute; the sopranino, soprano, C-Melody, F alto, E-flat alto, baritone, bass, and contrabass saxophones; and the E-flat, B-flat, and contrabass clarinets.
Early in his career, along with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and violinist Leroy Jenkins, braxton led a trio and was involved with the AACM or the Association For The Advancement of Creative Musicians. Never genuinely accepted into the Jazz establishment, the association was aptly titled. In 1968 Braxton recorded the highly influential For Alto, the first full length album for unaccompanied saxophone.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE-My Bloody Underground CD (A Records-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28909
Recorded in Liverpool, England and Reykjavik, Iceland, "My Bloody Underground" is the thirteenth fullâ€length album released by The Brian Jonestown Massacre and first for BJM's leader Anton Newcombe’s own record label 'a recordings'.
Fans and critics of Brian Jonestown Massacre have eagerly awaited a new album for 4 years now will not be disappointed.
From the opening track, "Bring Me The Head Of Paul McCartney On Heather Mill's Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs On The White House)" and throughout "My Bloody Underground's" 12 tracks and 75 minutes, the listener is taken on a trip that contains stirring visions of sunny Californian communes all the way to New York City bars on the Lower East Side. The entire album provides provocative glimpses into Anton Newcombe’s head, both the darkness and the light.
Brian Jonestown Massacre has been somewhat of a musical commune for many respected musicians over the years. Bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Silver Rockets, The Black Angels, The Raveonettes, The Dilettantes, Ride (Mark Gardener appears on "My Bloody Underground") are all part of BJM's musical family tree.
Indeed, this is a band that has witnessed many incarnations since its inception in San Francisco in 1995. Twoâ€dozen band members later and numerous "ups and downs" (check out "Dig!" the documentary based on both BJM and The Dandy Warhols), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic, cultâ€like collective, is front man Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe.

CHEVEU-s/t CD (Born Bad-$15.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28881
A couple years ago, S-S had the pleasure of turning the record freak world onto CHEVEU with their Dog 7-inch, followed by the Tete de Bebe comp LP. The label also helped dement the world by distroing their next two singles and putting out their split 7-inch with Tyvek. And now they are very very very happy to present this Parisian trio's debut album, simply titled Cheveu. This dad is chock full of these Frenchmen's unique take on punk rock & electro, kind of like a bastard mating of Trio, Stockhausen, and King Coleman--or at least that challenging. But Cheveu don't lose the song in their experimentation. Imported from France.

EL PERRO DEL MAR-From The Valley To The Stars CD (Control Group-$14.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28912
El Perro Del Mar is the alter ego of Sarah Assbring. Her second album is an opus, chock full of non-traditional folk songs that explore the world at large. She's joined at times on the record by members of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphonic Choir. Her 2006 debut garnered high profile raves from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to NPR to The NY Times. "A minimal Phil Spector sound. Unique and magical" - The London Times.

JOHN FAHEY-Mill Pond & Collected Paintings CD (Important-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28865
The Mill Pond was originally released in 1997 as a double 7" that went immediately out of print. For it's 10th anniversary we're issuing it on compact disc housed in a deluxe letter pressed jacket and including an extensive booklet collecting John Fahey's paintings for the very first time. Limited edition. On this EP, Fahey uses heavy reverb, electric slide and feedback to create an eerie mood. He gets a bit of help from Jeff Allman, who recorded the songs and adds some electronic noise in spots, and from Scott Colburn, who mixed the tracks, but this record is all Fahey. The Mill Pond is all over the place stylistically, so it should confuse those who try to pigeonhole Fahey into any one category. The Mill Pond further proves that there is only one category into which he fits: truly innovative guitar genius. "Four ecstatic, lo-fi grabs for the ring of eternity, recorded in Fahey's Oregon hotel room. Containing the first graspable evidence of John's throat-singing abilities, t
his represents the merging of the bull and the china shop. The crudity of the electronics and the delicacy of the stringwork makes for a wonderful match. " Byron Coley

ROBERT FORSTER-The Evangelist CD (Yep Roc-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28900
Robert Forster's first album in 11 years, The Evangelist finds the Go-Betweens co-founder as winsome and haunting as ever. Nearly two years after the death of Grant McLennan, his fellow Go-Between and writing partner of 30 years, Forster has produced an album that is both wildly progressive and haunted by the ghost of his artistic soul mate. "Demon Days," co-written with McLennan shortly before he died, is an all too telling spine tingling journey into oblivion. "Pandanus" and "Did She Overtake You?" are lively juggernauts that delightfully reprise the rhythmic tensions of Spring Hill Fair. "The Evangelist" is a wistful cousin to "He Lives My Life" (from The Friends of Rachel Worth) and "From Ghost Town" is a deeply personal and poignant farewell to a lost brother. Throughout, The Evangelist is a masterpiece of honesty and compassion.
Forster himself describes The Evangelist this way, "I wasn't sure if I was ever going to make another record but this summer it just materialized. It's a direct record. I've written seven of the songs, and three are co-written with Grant. Adele and Glenn from The Go-Betweens are with me. It's not Oceans Apart 2 - it's something else, but with trails going into the past and I'm proud of it."

GREY DATURAS-Return to Disruption CD (Neurot-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28882
Melbourne, Australia's Grey Daturas are an improvisational, instrumental trio with no songs or melodies; they don't rehearse, yet maintain a touring ethos that matches early hardcore pioneers. Drawing influence from a vast ocean of musical styles including free jazz, the avant garde, psych, punk, metal, industrial, and noise, the band's blend of harsh and dark psychedelia unmistakably their own.
From their nihilistic, sheer-noise-based beginnings six-plus years ago improvising soundtracks to silent horror classics and '60s physics animations, Grey Daturas have morphed into a surreal auditory nightmare, blending dark, pulsating drones, slow, low-end sludge riffs, crushing percussion, and walls of ear-torturing noise. Three and a half years after the release of their globally acclaimed second album, Dead in the Woods, and following numerous EPs, split and collaborative releases with the likes of Yellow Swans, Monarch, Bardo Pond, and Wolf Eyes, Grey Daturas unearth their finest and most challenging work.
Between Dead in the Woods and Return to Disruption, the most obvious difference is the improved production values. Where Dead in the Woods took a modest month to complete on eight-track/quarter-inch tape, Return to Disruption spanned a lengthy eighteen months on 24-track/two-inch tape. The band once again teamed up with Melbourne-based recording engineer Neil Thomason to track and mix drums, guitars, bass, and various other sounds and objects such as contact-microphone feedback, scrap metal, hardware materials and tools, violin, saxophone, and electronics. Following three months with Thompson, the remaining fifteen months (between numerous tours of the USA, Europe, and Australia) were spent painstakingly post-producing and collaging together the original tracks from the sessions, with the final mastering touches of Pig Destroyer's Scott Hull, to what has become the vast and consistently flowing epic that is Return To Disruption.

JAMIE LIDELL-Jim CD (Warp-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28906
Recorded in Berlin, Los Angeles and Paris, Jim takes even further what was started with "Multiply", finding the balance between the spontaneous creativity of his raw ideas and the careful craft and polish of a great record. Jim will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It's a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of 'hillbilly funk'. "I haven't tried to hide the influences," says Jamie Lidell "This is the music I love." But, listen closely and you can hear Jamie moving in new directions, creating a sound and style that is entirely his own.

ERIC MATTHEWS-The Imagination Stage CD (Empyrean-$11.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28904
With "The Imagination Stage" Eric Matthews is finally, fully back. Not only does his new album mark a return to glorious form, but it charts a stirring departure from the pop norm. Conscious craft drawn from a subconscious spark. Music conjured from "a deeper, more mysterious place," as he puts it. Dream pop in the truest sense of the phrase.
"There's something new and different that's happening to me creatively," Matthews says. "There's the music I imagine, music that I want to make" and then there's the music I've been able to make. And those two aren't necessarily the same thing. Now, what I'm making is akin to dreaming music" something ‘other-ly'.†Matthews has never experienced this sensation before. Not with Cardinal, his critically adored '90's chamber pop outfit, and not with his earlier solo work, starting with 'It's Heavy In Here,' his acclaimed 1995 debut for Sub Pop Records. “I think it's a pretty rare thing,†says Matthews. “But I'm not going to say I' the only one it's happened to, because it's probably responsible for many of the special records we know about.

MAYBE IT'S RENO-s/t CD (Teenbeat-$11.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28899
Joining Bridget Cross (UNREST/AIR MIAMI) in Maybe It's Reno are her Unrest bandmates MARK ROBINSON & PHIL KRAUTH; it's almost like a Unrest reunion album. These ten songs mix that old Unrest pop sound & update it for the 21st century

MONADE-Monstre Cosmic CD (Too Pure-$11.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28096
Initially an outlet for Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), the debut album from Monade, Socialisme Ou Barbarie (2003), was in fact a collection of solo work dubbed 'The Bedroom Recordings'. For its sophmore release A Few Steps More (too pure 2005), Monade developed into a fully fledged band both live and in the studio, completing tours of the USA and Europe.
For their third album the band again retreated to Instant Zero near Bordeaux, the resulting album Monstre Cosmic, is their most most assured and distinct album yet. Monade will be supporting Stereolab on tour for the first time in April/May

GARY NUMAN-Engineers (Live) CD (Beggars Banquet-$11.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28873
VERY limited, and then gone for good -- don't sleep! Recorded live at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney Australia on May 31st 1980 Engineers is an amazingly pristine snapshot of the rapidly evolving Mr. Numan. Made up mostly of material from "Replicas" and "The Pleasure Principal" "Engineers" fills a hole that Gary Numan collectors didn't even know was there.

OCCASIONAL KEEPERS-True North CD (LTM-$17.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28861
LTM present True North, the second album from The Occasional Keepers, an ongoing studio collaboration between songwriters Bobby Wratten (Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars) and Carolyn Allen and Caesar (The Wake). True North was recorded and produced by the Keepers with Ian Catt (St Etienne) in London in February 2008. Guest musician Beth Arzy (Aberdeen, Trembling Blue Stars) features on The Life Of The Fields. Retaining plenty of acoustic, reflective elements from the previous album, this release adds experimental, song-based pop touches to great effect. Track listing: If The Ravens Leave/The Cricket Laced Midnight/Town Of 85 Lights/Leave The Secret There Forever/The Life Of The Fields/Factory Records/I've Realized/Snow And Feathers/Elsinore/A Distant Piano On A Foggy Night. Praise for The Occasional Keepers: "This Sarah supergroup lives up to the expectations that come from such an important meeting of musical minds, and there's a real synergy here" (Exclaim!); "Often the sma
llest touches have the greatest impact, like dropping a bomb on a calm hillside" (All Music Guide); "An album of rainy day melancholia and innocent beauty" (Leonard's Lair); "Lovely bubble-bath pop and slo-mo waltz" (Teletext).

POCAHAUNTED / ROBEDOOR - Hunted Gathering 2xCD (Digitalis-$19.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28915
Both a split release and a collaboration between these two drone faves. Both groups have unleashed an army for the ages with Haunted Gathering. Drones painted with black holes collapse under their own weight while the arcangelic voices of Pocahaunted birth a brand new spirit of decay.

JACK ROSE-Dr. Ragtime and His Pals / Jack Rose 2xCD (Beautiful Happiness-$15.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28917
This double-disc features a brand new album from Philadelphia guitarist Jack Rose along with his highly acclaimed and out-of-print self-titled record (originally a limited release on the Archive Recordings label). On Dr. Ragtime & Pals, Rose duets with Glenn Jones, Micah Smaldone, Mike Gangloff, Harmonica Dan, and Sean Bowles. This is a major work from a big player in the modern American Primitive world, often compared to the likes of John Fahey.

SARANDON-Kill Twee Pop CD (Slumberland-$9.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28919
Since their formation by guitarist Crayola in 2003, Sarandon has been on a mission to save indie from wetness, knee-jerk twee posturing, and careless cardigan wearing. This potent group of post-punk tacticians takes its cues from the rough angularity beloved by bands on labels like Ron Johnson and Slampt, and Sarandon is the proud parent of a string of five 7-inch EPs (and one compilation thereof) fairly bursting with short, sharp tunes, wiry riff-mad guitars, spastic drumming, and terse-yet-clever lyrics. Trimming all musical and lyrical fat, Sarandon cram more ideas and passion into 1:30 than many bands do across a whole record.
Some points of comparison include Big Flame, The Minutemen, Bogshed, Fire Engines, and The Fall, and though Sarandon share musical DNA with those groups, they've forged their own path and unique sound. Crayola marries naggingly catchy tunes to corruscating blasts of guitar mayhem, combining the punchy, driving tunes with surprisingly memorable melodies and smart lyrics. It's pop, but possibly the angriest and most aggressive pop ever heard.
Kill Twee Pop! is the first fruit of a line-up consisting of Crayola, Tom Greenhalgh on drums, and ex-Big Flame/Great Leap Forward legend Alan Brown on bass. Brown and Greenhalgh are an incredibly tight and powerful rhythm section, providing Crayola with such a sure foundation that he's now letting the songs stretch out a bit-- one tune even breaking the three-minute barrier-- which is fitting as this is the first proper Sarandon album, and it shows them at their itchy, spiky, angular, aggressive, enthusiastic best.
From the chugging "Welcome" to the blues-by-way-of-The Birthday Party "The Completist's Library" to the insanely catchy "Mike's Dollar" and the croon-tastic "The Discotheque Is My Lover," this album is packed with great tunes, recalling the best of '80s post-punk and bringing it bang up-to-date with passion, humor and wit. Kill Twee Pop! is a call-to-arms for those tired of paint-by-the-numbers indie, a ration of passion in these cynical times, an antidote to your massive haircut, a soundtrack for your next dance party, an updated cubist pop manifesto.
"... an undeniable low-key genius." --The Wire
"These boys are up there with the best. Top brit indie perfection." --Norman Records
ROBIN SAVILLE (ISAN) - Peasgood Nonsuch CD (Static Caravan-$18.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28866
Robin is half of ISAN. Lugubrious and minimal. Melodic and otherworldly. Hot on the blistering heels of his debut solo single (VAN 145) comes this full-length outing from the social worker turned gardener. Double digging over unlikely boundaries is something of a habit for Robin, and this record characteristically lurches between moods; from elegiac to wistful, and from meditative to bouncy, this record runs the full gamut. Creaking synths, loping bass and a succession of chimes seep from the nimble textures pressed tightly together. Lush and filmic, the nine tracks here cultivate and harvest a twinkling yet intense arc, with strange and alien sounds nestling snugly next to crumpled rhythms and gurgles, all peppered with tinges of acoustic guitar and eerie tones. 'Peasgood Nonsuch' works over nutrient-rich electronica soil, germinating an earthy hybrid of intricately woven melodies and pulses, stewed and heated to perfection. An organic journey from the pesticide-free plot to
the kitchen table, it's a recipe full of beat-tastic ingredients ripe for picking from the orchard. As one of half of the duo which comprises isan, Robin Saville has long been part of that seminal act - masters of slow flow electronica, bridging the gap between different boundaries and atmospheres, not to mention untangling messy knots of wires and cables all around the world. With its roots closer in feel to isan's earlier, more sprightly offerings, 'Peasgood Nonsuch' is light and warm but with an underlying dark centre, so the audible tranquillity is imbued with an altogether tougher edge. Next to using a digital pipette to suck up the leaked new Portishead album this gunk of electronic DNA is ripe for unspooling and analysing in the Petri dish of your own home laboratories. A must for fans of isan, Inch-Time, Harold Budd, and all things Type Records ; Morr Music and Eno's Obscure label. Edition of 1000 copies in card gatefold.
SOPHIA-Technology Won't Save Us CD (Flowershop-$19.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28903
From lushly orchestrated instrumentals to pure pop-rock-noise and a dark lyrical depth rarely found in today's music, Sophia's fourth studio album "Technology Won't Save Us" is Robin Proper-Sheppard's (former singer/guitarist with seminal 90's guitar band The God Machine) most ambitious record to date. The initial limited-edition version of "Technology Won't Save Us" will be released as a double-CD DigiPak including a 6 song bonus acoustic CD.

SPECTRUM MEETS CAPTAIN MEMPHIS-Indian Giver CD (Birdman-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28893
A few years ago, Sonic Boom (Spaceman 3, Spectrum, EAR) traveled to Independence, Mississippi to work with legendary producer Jim Dickinson, a.k.a. Captain Memphis. The result is Indian Giver, a true collaboration where the two artists share both a stage and their musical visions. "The Lonesome Death Of Johnny Ace," an epic, southern-fried biographical groover, tells the tale of a famous singer's Christmas Day Russian roulette tragedy.
The rest of the album finds Boom revisiting his past: a new, fuzzier rendition of Mudhoney's "When Tomorrow Hits," a revamped version of ultra-rare Spectrum popper "Take Your Time," and Spaceman 3 staple "Hey Man (Amen)," where Dickinson throws down some back-ups. The Dickinson tunes are brand new and eerie, with his recitations backed by ecstatic symphonies. The record is book ended by new Spectrum number "Mary," which carries with it a decidedly Neu! theme.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime musical meeting, and the resultant album could only have come from these two musical icons.
2006 was an amazing year for 65daysofstatic. After releasing their second album, One Time For All Time, the Sheffield quartet set about touring relentlessly. They revisited many of the UK cities they had played in before, and also ventured abroad for the fit time, taking in nine countries along the way. One of those was Japan, where they played the Summer Sonic Festival in front of 10,000 people. In December, they went into the studio and recorded their best album yet - The Destruction Of Small Ideas. Super-thick double gatefold vinyl is limited to 2000 copies worldwide!
MATT BALDWIN-Paths of Ignition LP (American Dust-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28868
One of the more unexpected-- if worthwhile-- byproducts of the 21st-century underground American folk revival is a renewed interest in solo acoustic guitar music. Spare, haunting, pastoral sounds have a struck a new chord, and the names John Fahey and Takoma are hip again. Just check the mighty Tompkins Square and Strange Attractors labels for the proof in the pudding.
Matt Baldwin, raised in California's rustic Pacific Grove, educated in the alternative mecca of Berkeley, sits in the center of this quiet, swirling scene. He is the visionary wildcard of today's solo guitar music, the ambitious fever dreamer, the serpent in the grass. Towering tall with long blonde locks, he conjures from his axe dark and mystical realms. He calls his music "New Age," and he may not be joking.
Featured on Tompkins Square's 2006 Berkeley Guitar LP, Baldwin now steps into his own with his debut solo release. Unlike many of his peers, he looks beyond the traditions of Fahey (whom he calls "a teacher," not a god), bringing portentous and progressive elements into his music, alongside a dreamy country lilt. He covers Krautrock legends Neu! ("Weissensee") and metal Vikings Judas Priest ("Winter"), and culls inspiration from prog heroes Yes on the closing epic "Rainbow." His music comes on like a creeping moss, verdant but threatening, comforting yet unsettling. It will work its way inside you.
BLUES CONTROL-Puff LP (Holy Mountain-$13.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28869
As you may or may not know, it can sometimes get pretty hairy working at a record store when some smelly, denim-clad dude walks in asking for the blues. If youire lucky, heis at least wearing a belt when you point him over to the records that are now relegated to an open spot on the floor. Thatis just one scenario; who doesnit love those other blues fondly recalled with names like Blues Addicts and Blues Creation? And letis not forget that other queen of the bluesoBarbara from Just Farr a Laugh. Blues Control might just be the missing link between Van Halen and legendary experimentalist Henry Flynt. They are a duo. Lea Cho plays swank but grounded atmospheric keyboard parts (think Harold Budd), through which guitar player and manipulator of assorted junk-on-table Russ Waterhouse cuts, whittles and lays to waste. Itis a hazy, spaced world that exists between fuzzed distortion, jabbering electronics, and a lazy, stay-in-bed psychedelic glaze, with rhythmic keyboards pulsating b
elow it all a la a guy named Florianoand you can choose which one you want. Oh yeah, I gotta mention the humid bikini-vibe that permeates the entire album. So, is there a blues angle to it? Yeah, but youive got to bury yourself in it or dig your way in. Come out stinking if you want. iItis like the soundtrack to Rainbow Bridgeoif it were in the Caribbean!i oTobj^rn Axelrod, Bus Rider
BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE-Bravery Repetition and Noise 180g LP (A records-$18.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28911
Originally released in 2001 and now reissued on "a records", Anton Newcombe's own record label , "Bravery, Repetition and Noise" is available again on vinyl. Released on 180 gram purple vinyl, this reissue is limited to 2,000 copies. "Bravery, Repetition and Noise" is a dark dreamy album, rich in atmosphere, layered in waves of sound. The album's antecedents are clear--inspired as much by psychedelia as punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since.
CLOUDLAND CANYON-Lie in Light LP (Kranky-$12.99)
It appears there is a 2nd "kosmische musik" period in full bloom around the world at the moment, not so much "kosmische" as in "krautrock" but instead "cosmic". This is anything but one-dimensional, as they traverse a wide swath of territory. From the lock down groove of the opening track, to a dense buzz, through some pastoral pscyh & on to the gentle wash of the closer, they've created an eclectic & rewarding listen.
ELEH / SUN CIRCLE - Split 180g LP (Important-$15.99)
Essential limited edition 180 gram vinyl release pressed in an edition of 500 copies. Letter pressed jackets. Beautiful drone compositions from two kindred musical entities. Eleh's pure analog drones are a perfect compliment to Sun Circle's ecstatic high volume compositions. Eleh's track is a slight departure from the sub-sonic bass heavy drones of their first two records. This time around there's more emphasis on a glistening shimmer paying tribute to the natural beauty of a winters day. Recorded using vintage modular analog synthesizers and glowing tube oscillators Eleh pays tribute to sixties minimalism. Sun Circle's Important debut is psychoacoustic minimalism meets psychedelic maximalism. Ecstatic high volume drones, long form trance musics and peace noise. Bowed strings, voices, organs, percussion and world instruments.
ADAM GREEN-Sixes and Sevens LP (Rough Trade-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28878
Adam Green was only 19 years old when he and Kimya Dawson were known as the Moldy Peaches. Their music incorporated a resourceful mix of youthful sweetness, pottymouthed surrealism and perfect pop craftsmanship, and they captivated critics and won fans around the world, while propelling New York's Antifolk scene to international prominence. Adam began his solo career in 2002 and Sixes and Sevens will be his fifth solo album.
Adam Green's music is reminiscent of Bacharach and Brel, and he has created his own brand of playful pop while refining it with each release. He has toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller and The Strokes. Rolling Stone has praised his "pure genius," Mojo referred to him as an "unexpectedly rich talent" and Elle Girl called him "wicked awesome". Julian Casablancas of The Strokes was one of the first to notice Green's talents. About Green, Casablancas says: "I always amazes me how he can express such deep meaning with such twisted humor. Adam is eccentric and down-to-earth, with newfound technical proficiency over a wider spectrum of styles. I love it."
ORCHESTRE REGIONAL DE KAYES-s/t LP (Mississippi-$12.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28914
Kayes is situated on the Bamako-Dakar railway line in north-western Mali, just near the Senegalese border. The town is the regional capital, par of Mali's eight administrative areas. Mali's cultural policy stipulated that a local orchestra represent each region, and that the orchestras would compete at the national arts festivals. After the coup of 1968 these contests were held bi-annually and were known as the Biennales. At the arts festivals the Regional Orchestra of Kayes would compete against the other orchestras from Ségou, Tombouctou, Sikasso, Mopti, Gao, Koulikoro and Bamako for the championship prize. This reissue represents the orchestra's only recording - originally released on the Bärenreiter-Musicaphon series. . This recording represents some of the finest modern music to have been recorded in Africa. The Kayes orchestra were particularly outstanding, with arresting, searing guitar solos, and an incredibly tight band modernizing African folk tales into beautiful p
op music.
JAY REATARD-Blood Visions LP (In the Red-$9.99)
http://tonevendor.com/cart.php?add=28916
Having founded seminal Memphis punk outfit The Reatards at the tender age of sixteen, Jay Reatard is a seasoned veteran of the garage-punk scene and he's barely twenty-six years old. In the '90s The Reatards turned the Memphis underground rock scene upside down with a legendary live show so over-the-top that they were banned in a number of European countries.
Never content to stick to one genre, one project or one band, Jay also co-leads the synth-punk Lost Sounds with Alicja Trout, plays drums for The Final Solutions, co-fronts The Angry Angles and runs his own label Shattered Records. He's developed such a dedicated following that even his dirty socks have sold on eBay!
In The Red is proud to announce the release of Blood Visions, Jay's first as a solo artist. Combining the aggressive approach of The Reatards with a melodic pop sensibility, and production recalling classic UK punk records -- The Adverts (who are covered here), Siouxsie & the Banshees, ATV, etc. -- Blood Visions is the most satisfying accomplishment of this young man's career thus far.
Available now for the first time on vinyl, Kensington Blues is the fourth full-length release from Jack Rose and his most diverse outing by far. The album is an inspired mix of styles and sounds, with straight ragtime, heavy 12-string, and that sweet, sweet Weissenborn lap guitar all checking in. Honed during endless touring in 2004, the repertoire here is delivered with maximum authority in a series of first-take performances recorded in early 2005.
"While the new century's novel folk has already seen significant definition, Rose is largely alone in talking new century ideas with the old language.... Kensington Blues is derivative and at the same time nearly brilliant. 8.0." --Pitchfork
